Chapter 5: The Price of a Stolen Dream
“That's not my signature.””
Vanessa pointed at the document.
“It's forged. Someone is trying to frame my family.””
Margaret didn't flinch.
“The signature has already been examined by two independent handwriting specialists.””
“Then your specialists are incompetent.””
Richard Cole finally moved between them.
“Vanessa, stop talking.””
She turned sharply.
“Don't tell me what to do.””
His jaw tightened.
“Not here.””
Maya watched the exchange.
There was something strange about it.
Richard wasn't behaving like a chairman defending his company. He looked like a man trying to prevent a secret from escaping.
Margaret placed the letter on the table.
“The original is secured in the foundation's legal archive. This is a certified copy. It was recovered alongside a series of financial records.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Your grandfather paid Grace Bennett's former business partner to obtain the collection.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“My grandfather was a businessman. He bought and sold companies. That's not a crime.””
“No,” Adrian replied.
“But deliberately destroying a designer's reputation to obtain her work is something else.””
Vanessa turned toward the audience.
“Listen to yourselves. You're believing a story about a woman who died years ago because her daughter made a pretty dress tonight?””
Maya stepped forward.
“Don't talk about my mother like that.””
Vanessa laughed.
“What are you going to do? Cry again?””
Maya's eyes remained steady.
“No. I'm going to ask you one question.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Make it quick.””
“Why did you destroy my gown?””
The question surprised everyone.
Vanessa glanced at the teal stain visible on the discarded champagne fabric beside the sewing station.
“I already told you. It was an accident.””
“An accident?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell everyone you wanted to teach me a lesson?””
Vanessa's expression tightened.
Maya continued.
“Why did you tell the guests I wasn't good enough to stand beside you?””
“Because you weren't!””
“Why did you ask the security guard to remove me before I could present my collection?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Maya stepped closer.
“You knew what I was wearing tonight. You knew what it represented. You knew I had spent eleven months creating it. You didn't spill that liquid by accident.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Then tell us.””
Richard grabbed Vanessa's arm.
“That's enough. We're leaving.””
She pulled away.
“Don't touch me!””
Margaret raised the document.
“There's another reason I believe you knew about the archive.””
She turned to Richard.
“Would you care to explain the transfer of twelve million dollars from Sterling Fashion Group to a private consulting company registered under Vanessa's name?””
Richard went rigid.
The audience fell silent.
Vanessa stared at Margaret.
“How did you get that?””
Margaret answered quietly.
“Your company submitted the financial records to the foundation during its proposed acquisition of our European textile division.””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Those payments were legitimate consulting fees.””
“Then why were they transferred to a company that had no employees, no registered office, and no documented business activity?””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“That's private financial information.””
“Not when it concerns the purchase of stolen intellectual property.””
Maya looked between them.
Twelve million dollars.
A private company.
A missing collection.
She felt as though she had walked into a room where everyone knew the ending except her.
Adrian approached the microphone.
“I think it's time I told them what happened twenty-two years ago.””
Margaret nodded.
He looked toward Maya.
“Your mother and I met in Paris. I was presenting my first major collection, and Grace was working as a junior designer for a small independent atelier.””
Maya listened carefully.
“She had created a series of experimental gowns using discarded fabrics. Nobody believed the designs could be commercially successful. But I saw something extraordinary in her work.””
He paused.
“She could take something damaged and make it more beautiful than it had been before.””
Maya glanced at her dress.
Adrian continued.
“I introduced her to Margaret. Together, we arranged a presentation for her collection. The foundation agreed to fund her studio and distribute her designs internationally.””
“What happened?”” Maya asked.
“Three days before the presentation, Grace discovered that several of her original sketches had been copied. She confronted the people responsible. Within forty-eight hours, she was accused of stealing the work herself.””
Maya's stomach tightened.
“Who accused her?””
Adrian looked at Richard.
“Your grandfather's company.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“My grandfather is dead. You can't accuse him of anything.””
Adrian's voice became colder.
“Your grandfather didn't act alone.””
Richard looked away.
Maya noticed.
“Mr. Cole?””
He didn't answer.
“Did you know my mother?””
Richard finally met her eyes.
“I was young.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I was an assistant at Sterling Fashion Group. I handled several internal projects.””
“Did you meet Grace Bennett?””
Richard swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Did you know her designs were stolen?””
He looked toward Margaret.
Then toward Vanessa.
“I didn't know the full situation.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You signed the acquisition paperwork.””
“I was following instructions.””
“And you destroyed the original ownership records.””
Richard's face reddened.
“I was protecting my career!””
The admission rang through the ballroom.
Maya felt a chill.
“Why?””
Richard stared at her.
“Because your mother had evidence that could have destroyed Sterling Fashion Group. She discovered that the company had used her sketches to create an entire collection under another designer's name.””
Vanessa turned on him.
“Shut up!””
But Richard was no longer listening.
“She threatened to expose everything. Your grandfather panicked. He ordered the original designs removed from the studio.””
Maya's voice was barely audible.
“Who took them?””
Richard looked at Vanessa.
She stepped backward.
“No.””
Margaret opened another envelope.
“This is the inventory record from the night the archive disappeared. It lists the items removed from Grace Bennett's studio.””
She read the first few lines.
“Forty-three original sketches. Twelve completed garments. Three design notebooks. One personal collection of photographs.””
Maya's fingers trembled.
“Where are they now?””
Margaret looked at Vanessa.
“We believe some of them were transferred into Sterling Fashion Group's private collection.””
Vanessa's expression turned hostile.
“You have no proof.””
Margaret nodded.
“That's why we requested an independent audit.””
Richard looked horrified.
“You already did?””
“Yes.””
Margaret placed a thick report on the table.
“The audit uncovered several garments carrying Grace Bennett's original design labels beneath replacement labels bearing the Sterling Fashion Group name.””
The ballroom erupted again.
Vanessa turned toward Richard.
“You said everything had been destroyed!””
Richard's head snapped toward her.
The words had escaped before she could stop them.
Maya felt the room tilt.
Everything.
Had been destroyed.
Vanessa had just admitted she knew there was something to destroy.
Margaret slowly closed the report.
“Thank you, Vanessa.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“What?””
“You've just confirmed that you knew about the missing collection.””
Vanessa looked around.
Her face turned crimson.
“I didn't mean—”
But the damage was done.
Maya stepped toward her.
“You knew my mother's work was stolen.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You knew it was hidden.””
Still nothing.
“And you still stood in front of everyone tonight and called me a disgrace.””
Vanessa suddenly raised her voice.
“Because you were supposed to stay out of it!””
The words exploded across the ballroom.
Maya froze.
Vanessa's breathing became ragged.
“My family built everything! We spent decades creating that brand. And now you're walking in here wearing some ridiculous peacock costume, pretending you deserve everything!””
Maya stared at her.
“Everything?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.
“You have no idea what it took to keep this company alive.””
Richard whispered, “Vanessa, please.””
She ignored him.
“My grandfather gave me a future. He gave me a name. He gave me an empire. And now everyone expects me to hand it to you because your mother left behind some old sketches?””
Maya took a slow breath.
“I never asked for your empire.””
“You're about to inherit it!””
Margaret raised her hand.
“That's not quite how this works.””
She turned toward Maya.
“The foundation has recovered only part of the archive. The ownership dispute remains under investigation. However, the original agreement contains a clause that was never fulfilled.””
“What clause?”” Maya asked.
Margaret looked at Adrian.
He nodded.
Margaret continued.
“Grace Bennett was promised a permanent creative partnership with the Whitmore Foundation. That partnership included a protected design studio, international distribution rights, and a voting position on the foundation's couture board.””
Maya looked confused.
“Why does that matter now?””
“Because Grace's contract specified that if she died before the archive was recovered, her daughter would inherit the position.””
Maya's knees nearly buckled.
A permanent seat on one of the most influential fashion boards in the world.
She had come to the gala hoping to win an emerging designer award.
Now she was being told she might inherit a legacy.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Then give it to her. See what happens when someone with no experience is handed power.””
Margaret closed the document.
“Before we discuss the position, there is one final piece of evidence.””
She turned toward the large screen behind the stage.
“It's a recording Grace Bennett left with our legal department.””
Maya's heart stopped.
Her mother had left a recording?
The screen flickered.
A date appeared.
Twenty-two years earlier.
Then the image of a woman sitting in a small sewing studio appeared.
Maya recognized the face immediately.
Grace.
Her mother looked younger, her hair tied back, her hands resting on an unfinished emerald gown.
Maya stepped closer to the screen.
“Mom?””
Grace looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Maya, then something has happened to the collection.””
Maya covered her mouth.
Grace continued.
“And there's something I need you to know about the woman who will probably tell you she was only following orders.””
The recording suddenly paused.
A technician approached the screen.
Margaret frowned.
“What happened?””
The technician examined the equipment.
“Someone has interrupted the playback.””
The screen went black.
Then a message appeared.
*FILE ACCESS DENIED.*
Margaret turned sharply.
“Who stopped the recording?””
Nobody answered.
But Maya saw Vanessa quietly slip her phone into her handbag.
May you like
And she realized the secret wasn't finished coming out.
Someone was still trying to silence her mother.
