Chapter 6: The Secret He Carried Alone

I found Ethan in his room that evening.

He was sitting on the floor surrounded by textbooks.

The same image I had seen a hundred times.

Except this time, something was different.

He wasn’t studying.

He was staring.

“Hey.””

He looked up quickly.

“Hey, Dad.””

I leaned against the door.

“Can I come in?””

He nodded.

I sat beside him.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you tell me you stopped doing advanced assignments?””

His face changed immediately.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“I didn’t ask if you’re sorry.””

He looked down.

“Then why are you asking?””

“Because I want to understand.””

He swallowed.

“Because every time something good happens, something bad follows.””

That sentence hit harder than I expected.

“What do you mean?””

He picked at a loose thread on his hoodie.

“When I got the A+, Mom and you fought.””

“That wasn’t because of you.””

“I know.””

“But?””

He sighed.

“But it happened after me.””

I sat quietly.

Children don’t always understand cause and effect.

Sometimes they only understand timing.

“And when Tyler got his award?””

He looked away.

“I saw how happy everyone was.””

“And?””

“And I liked that.””

His voice got smaller.

“I liked that nobody was upset.””

My chest tightened.

“You think your success makes people upset?””

“Sometimes.””

I wanted to tell him he was wrong.

But I knew better.

Because feelings don’t disappear when someone corrects them.

I said:

“Ethan, you never have to choose between being kind and being successful.””

He looked at me.

“Really?””

“Really.””

The next day, I called Melissa.

I didn’t yell.

I didn’t accuse.

I just told her the truth.

She sat on the couch, silent.

“He thinks his achievements hurt the family.””

Her eyes filled immediately.

“I did that.””

I didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

That was the first time she said it without me forcing her.

“I did that.””

A week later, Melissa asked Ethan if they could spend Saturday together.

Just them.

No Tyler.

No me.

I was nervous.

Not because I didn’t trust her.

Because I knew Ethan.

He forgave people faster than they deserved.

They went to a small coffee shop near the park.

When they came home, Ethan looked different.

Lighter.

Not completely healed.

But lighter.

That night, Melissa sat beside me.

“I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“He asked me a question.””

“What question?””

She looked down.

“He asked if I ever wished he wasn’t smarter than Tyler.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did you say?””

“I said the truth.””

“And?””

“I told him I was never angry about his intelligence.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

“That Tyler would feel like he wasn’t enough.””

I nodded.

“That’s the first honest answer you’ve given.””

She looked hurt.

“I know.””

For months, she had tried to justify what happened.

Now she was finally looking at the reason underneath.

Fear.

Not cruelty.

But fear could still hurt people.

A few days later, Tyler came to me.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

He sat down beside me.

“Are you and Mom going to get divorced?””

I didn’t expect that.

“Why are you asking?””

“Because things are different.””

I looked at him.

“Different good or different bad?””

He thought about it.

“Different honest.””

That surprised me.

“What does that mean?””

He shrugged.

“Before, everyone acted like everything was fine.””

I nodded.

“And now?””

“Now people say when they’re wrong.””

That was a mature answer for a thirteen-year-old.

Maybe too mature.

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“You should never have had to understand adult problems.””

“I know.””

“But I’m glad you feel safe enough to talk.””

He smiled.

That night, I thought maybe we were finally moving forward.

Then Melissa received a phone call.

I saw her face change.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“It’s my sister.””

“What about her?””

Melissa held the phone tightly.

“She wants to talk about what happened.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Melissa hesitated.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Because she says she knows why I treated Ethan differently.””
