Chapter 4: The Signature That Could Destroy My Family

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to understand something,” Peter Walsh said through the phone.

“Our company does not intend to take anyone’s property unlawfully.””

I stared at the forged agreement on Daniel’s desk.

“Then why does your company have a document claiming my son can sell my farm without my permission?””

“Because that is what we were given.””

“By whom?””

“Mrs. Vanessa Carter and her mother, Darlene Whitmore.””

Hearing their names spoken so casually made my stomach twist.

I gripped the telephone.

“Did you verify the authorization with my attorney?””

“No. We were assured the documentation had already been reviewed.””

“By whom?””

“Mrs. Whitmore.””

I almost laughed.

Darlene had apparently appointed herself the guardian of my property, my future, and my son’s inheritance.

“Mr. Walsh, I am telling you directly that I have not agreed to sell one inch of my land. If your company attempts to transfer ownership, I will take legal action.””

There was a pause.

“Understood,” he said.

“I will place the transaction on hold pending verification.””

“Not pending verification. Until the fraudulent documents are investigated.””

“I understand.””

When the call ended, I sat motionless for several seconds.

Then I picked up Daniel’s photograph.

He was thirty-five in the picture, with dark hair, sunburned cheeks, and the broad, uncomplicated smile of a man who believed that an honest day’s work could solve almost anything.

“You told me to protect Malcolm,” I whispered.

“You never told me what to do when the person hurting him was the woman he married.””

My phone vibrated.

Malcolm.

I answered immediately.

“Mom, what happened? Vanessa says you called some property developer and threatened them.””

I closed my eyes.

“Malcolm, did you sign a power of attorney giving your wife permission to sell my farm?””

“What? No!””

“Did you sign any document authorizing her to act on your behalf concerning my property?””

“No, Mom. Why would I do that?””

“Because Keystone Land Development has a document saying you did.””

The silence that followed was so complete I could hear the rain ticking against the kitchen window.

Finally, Malcolm said, “I'm coming over.””

“Don't tell Vanessa what we discussed.””

“Mom—”

“Please. I need you to see something first.””

“I'll be there in twenty minutes.””

He hung up.

I photographed every page in the blue folder, then placed the originals in a metal document box. Margaret had advised me to preserve everything, including the envelope, and I had followed her instructions carefully.

At twelve seventeen, headlights swept across the farmhouse windows.

Malcolm came through the front door without knocking.

He was still wearing his wedding suit, but his tie hung loose around his neck. His hair was damp, and his face had lost the warmth I had seen during the ceremony.

“Show me,” he said.

I led him into the office.

He read the development agreement once.

Then again.

His face changed when he reached the signature page.

“That isn't my signature.””

“You're sure?””

“Of course I'm sure!””

He slammed the paper onto the desk, then immediately picked it up again as if he were afraid of damaging evidence.

“Someone copied my signature from the power of attorney.””

I nodded.

“Margaret thinks we need to have the documents examined.””

Malcolm paced across the room.

“This is insane. Vanessa wouldn't do this.””

I said nothing.

He stopped.

“Mom, say something.””

“What would you like me to say?””

“That she wouldn't do this!””

His voice cracked on the final word.

I looked at my son, the little boy who used to fall asleep against my shoulder after Daniel brought him home from school.

“Malcolm, I hope you're right.””

He lowered himself into the chair opposite me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling her.””

“Malcolm, Margaret said—”

“I need to hear it from her.””

He put the call on speaker.

Vanessa answered after two rings.

“Darling! Where are you? Mom and I are waiting for you.””

“Did you contact Keystone Land Development?””

A pause.

“Yes. Why?””

“Did you give them documents claiming I authorized the sale of my mother's farm?””

Another pause.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“Oh, my God. Is this what Evelyn has been telling you?””

“Answer the question.””

“Malcolm, sweetheart, your mother is confused. We discussed helping her organize her finances.””

“Did you forge my signature?””

The laughter disappeared.

“Don't you dare accuse me of forgery.””

“Then explain this document.””

“I don't know what document you're talking about.””

“Your mother gave the company paperwork claiming I could authorize the sale of Mom's property.””

Vanessa's voice turned cold.

“You need to calm down. Your mother is manipulating you because she doesn't want us to have a life together.””

Malcolm stared at the phone.

“My mother hasn't asked for a single thing from me.””

“She has made you feel guilty your entire life!””

“That is not true.””

“You always run to her whenever there's a problem. You're a married man now, Malcolm. You need to decide which family comes first.””

I watched his fingers tighten around the phone.

Then he asked a question I would never forget.

“Vanessa, if my mother were standing right in front of you, would you tell her the truth?””

Silence.

A long, terrible silence.

Finally, Vanessa said, “I don't have to defend myself to either of you.””

The call ended.

Malcolm didn't move.

His wedding ring caught the light as he lowered his hand.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

I reached across the desk.

“Don't apologize for loving someone.””

“But I brought her into your life.””

“You brought the woman you believed she was into our lives. That isn't the same thing.””

He pressed both palms against his eyes.

“I told Dad I'd always protect you.””

“And you have.””

“Not from her.””

I wanted to tell him that he had done nothing wrong, but the words caught in my throat.

Because we still didn't know how far the deception went.

At one thirty, Margaret arrived with a document examiner she had contacted through her professional network. She photographed the papers, checked the signatures, and asked Malcolm a series of questions about the original power of attorney.

After an hour, she closed her notebook.

“The signatures appear inconsistent with the known samples,” she said.

“I cannot give you a final forensic conclusion today, but these documents require immediate investigation.””

Margaret placed the original power of attorney beside the suspicious authorization.

“The document Malcolm signed years ago expressly excludes the sale or transfer of real estate. Whoever prepared this authorization has represented his authority as broader than it is.””

Malcolm looked sick.

“So even if I signed the original document, it wouldn't permit this?””

“Correct.””

“And I didn't sign this one.””

“Then we have two separate issues to investigate: the questionable signature and the apparent misrepresentation of your authority.””

Margaret turned to me.

“Evelyn, did anyone ever have permission to copy these records?””

“No.””

“Did you sign any preliminary sale agreement?””

“Never.””

“Good. We will notify the appropriate authorities and arrange formal protection of the property records.””

Malcolm stood.

“What happens now?””

“We establish exactly what was submitted, who submitted it, and whether anyone attempted to register or use the documents.””

He looked at the clock.

“Monday is tomorrow.””

“I know,” Margaret said.

“That's why we need to act quickly.””

As she gathered her papers, my phone vibrated again.

A message from Ryan.

*Aunt Evelyn, please don't let Malcolm go back to Vanessa alone. I found something in the wedding venue's shared photo folder.*

Below the message was a photograph.

It showed Vanessa and Darlene in a hotel corridor the night before the wedding.

Darlene was holding a document.

Vanessa was pointing to a page.

And beside them stood a man I recognized.

Peter Walsh.

The acquisitions director from Keystone Land Development.

But the photograph had been taken at 9:42 p.m., long before Walsh claimed he knew anything about the suspicious transaction.

I enlarged the image.

On the document between Vanessa and her mother, I could make out a handwritten heading.

*Phase Two: Monday — remove Evelyn from the property.*

My blood ran cold.

“Malcolm,” I whispered.

He leaned over my shoulder.

“What does that mean?””

I stared at the photograph.

“I don't know.””

May you like

Then another message arrived from Ryan.

*There's a video, too. I think you need to see it before tomorrow morning.*
