Chapter 4: The Price of Knowing the Truth

“Madison has to sign what?”” Rebecca asked.

Laura Bennett placed her briefcase on the hallway console, carefully avoiding the framed photograph of Madison in her graduation gown.

“Not today,” the attorney replied.

“But someone has been encouraging her to sign a document that would transfer control of her inheritance to a third party. If she signs it before her eighteenth birthday, the consequences could be significant.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who has been contacting her?””

Laura looked at him.

“That's what I've been trying to establish.””

Rebecca held the envelope against her chest.

“Wait. Madison has an inheritance?””

“Yes. Michael established a trust shortly before his death. It contains money, investments, and a property he purchased in Madison's name. The trust was designed to protect her until she became an adult.””

“How much money are we talking about?””

Laura hesitated.

“Approximately two million dollars, including the property's current value.””

Rebecca stared at her.

For eighteen years, she had worked overtime at the hospital, clipped coupons, and postponed buying a new car because their family budget was tight. Daniel had repaired their aging roof himself rather than pay a contractor. They had saved for Madison's college tuition one paycheck at a time.

Meanwhile, the father Madison had spent years believing never cared about her had left her enough money to change her life.

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head.

“I knew Michael had been saving money. I didn't know the amount, and I certainly didn't know about a trust.””

Laura opened her briefcase and removed a second document.

“Mr. Carter was named as the temporary guardian of the trust's interests, not as its owner. Michael specifically instructed that the money must never be used to influence Madison's relationship with her family.””

Daniel stared at the page.

“He knew me well enough to know I'd never use his money to buy her love.””

“Apparently,” Laura said, “he also knew someone might try to use it against her.””

Rebecca's fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Who?””

Laura lowered her voice.

“Michael left a sealed letter explaining the circumstances surrounding the trust. I'm authorized to release it once I've verified Madison's identity and confirmed that she hasn't signed any competing agreement.””

“Then give it to us,” Rebecca said.

“I can't.””

Rebecca's face hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“Madison is the beneficiary. She has a right to know the truth, but I cannot simply disclose confidential estate documents to her parents without following the instructions in the will.””

“I'm her mother.””

“And Daniel is the man Michael trusted to protect her interests. That's precisely why I'm here.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Laura, if there's anything that could hurt Madison, I need to know.””

“The letter could hurt everyone involved,” Laura replied.

“Especially if the person who has been contacting Madison is the same person Michael feared.””

A noise sounded upstairs.

All three adults turned.

Madison stood at the top of the staircase, her backpack hanging from one shoulder.

She had heard enough.

“Two million dollars?”” she asked.

Rebecca closed her eyes briefly.

“Madison, come downstairs.””

“No. I want to know what she's talking about.””

“Then come downstairs and we'll explain.””

Madison descended slowly, staring at Laura.

“Are you saying my biological father left me money?””

“Yes,” Laura replied.

“But there are conditions attached to the trust.””

Madison's face transformed.

The anger disappeared. The defensiveness disappeared.

For the first time in days, she looked genuinely interested in a conversation with an adult.

“How much?””

“Approximately two million dollars.””

Madison let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Oh, my God.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“Did you know about this?””

“No.””

“Seriously?””

“Madison, I didn't know your biological father had left you that money.””

She studied his face, searching for a lie.

Then she looked at Rebecca.

“So you've been keeping this from me?””

Rebecca's expression tightened.

“We learned about it less than ten minutes ago.””

“Of course.””

“Madison—”

“You always do this. You tell me nothing, then expect me to trust you.””

Daniel took a step forward.

“We're trying to protect you.””

Madison laughed bitterly.

“Protect me from what? Being rich?””

“From people who might not have your best interests at heart,” Laura said.

Madison turned to her.

“Like who?””

“That's what we're trying to find out.””

Madison's phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

A smile flickered across her face before she could hide it.

Rebecca noticed.

“Who is that?””

“Nobody.””

“Madison, show me the message.””

“No.””

Laura looked between them.

“Is that the person you've been speaking to about your father?””

Madison's head snapped up.

“What?””

“Someone contacted me on your behalf yesterday. Did you ask them to do that?””

Madison's expression changed.

She looked at Daniel, then at Rebecca, then back at Laura.

Finally, she whispered, “His name is Michael.””

Rebecca felt the room go cold.

“Madison, your biological father died twelve years ago.””

“I know what you told me.””

“Then who are you talking to?””

Madison clutched her phone.

“Someone who knew him.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Who?””

“His name is Michael Reed. He says he was my father's business partner.””

Laura went very still.

“Did he give you any documents?””

Madison hesitated.

Then she reached into her backpack and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“I was going to show Mom later.””

Rebecca took it.

The document was titled Beneficiary Representation Agreement.

Beneath the heading were Madison's full name and the name of a company she had never heard of.

The final page contained a blank signature line.

Rebecca looked up.

“Were you planning to sign this?””

Madison's cheeks reddened.

“It's just paperwork. Michael Reed said he could help me get access to the money.””

Laura held out her hand.

“May I see it?””

She examined the pages, her expression growing darker with every paragraph.

“This is not a standard beneficiary representation agreement,” she said.

Madison crossed her arms.

“What does that mean?””

“It means that if you sign this document, you may be giving this company authority to control substantial portions of your inheritance.””

Madison stared at her.

“But Michael said it was temporary.””

“Did he explain the fees?””

“No.””

“The power of attorney clause?””

Madison shook her head.

“The arbitration provision?””

“No.””

Laura folded the document.

“Then you should not sign anything he gives you.””

Madison's eyes filled with angry tears.

“Everyone keeps telling me what I can and can't do!””

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Because you're about to make a decision that could affect the rest of your life.””

“It's my money!””

“Yes,” Rebecca replied.

“And that's why you deserve to understand what you're signing.””

Madison turned toward Daniel.

“You don't get to tell me what to do with my father's money.””

Daniel's expression tightened, but he kept his voice gentle.

“No. I don't. But I can tell you that anyone who genuinely cares about you won't rush you into signing something you don't understand.””

Madison stared at him.

For a second, Rebecca thought she might finally hear him.

Instead, Madison grabbed the agreement from Laura's hand.

“I'm going to meet Michael Reed after school. He said he'd explain everything.””

Laura stood abruptly.

“Madison, please don't meet him alone.””

Madison headed for the door.

“I'm not a child.””

“No,” Laura replied.

“But you are being targeted by someone who knows your father's history.””

Madison stopped.

Her expression flickered.

Then her phone vibrated again.

She read the message.

*Don't let them frighten you. Daniel has been hiding the truth from you for eighteen years. Ask him what happened the night your father died.*

Madison slowly raised her head.

The hallway seemed to shrink around them.

She looked directly at Daniel.

“What happened the night my father died?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Madison took another step toward him.

“Did you see him that night?””

His silence was enough to change everything.

“Daniel?””

Rebecca watched her husband struggle to find words.

Finally, he said, “Yes.””

Madison's mouth fell open.

“You saw my father the night he died?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Madison laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“You keep saying that. Every time I discover another secret, you say the same thing.””

She turned toward Rebecca.

“Did you know?””

“No,” Rebecca whispered.

Madison looked back at Daniel.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Daniel's eyes glistened.

“Your father called me that night. He was frightened. He said someone had threatened him, and he wanted me to meet him.””

“Who threatened him?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you meet him?””

Daniel nodded.

“Where?””

“At an old warehouse outside town.””

Madison stared at him.

“And?””

Daniel's voice broke.

“When I arrived, the police were already there.””

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Madison took a step backward.

“You were there when he died?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

The room fell silent.

May you like

Then Madison whispered the question that made Daniel's face crumple.

“Did you leave him there?””
