Chapter 9: The Son Who Came Back for Revenge
Daniel stared at the boy.
Rain fell between them, glistening beneath the streetlight. Gabriel stood with his shoulders squared, his hands trembling slightly around the silver locket.
He looked seventeen, perhaps eighteen.
Old enough to understand betrayal.
Young enough to still hope someone might explain it.
Daniel took a cautious step forward.
"Gabriel?""
The boy's expression hardened.
"Don't say my name like you know me.""
Daniel stopped.
"I don't know you.""
"Exactly.""
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
"You don't know where I grew up. You don't know who raised me. You don't know what happened when I asked why my birth certificate had been changed.""
Daniel swallowed.
"I want to know.""
"Now?""
The boy's voice rose.
"Now that everyone has lied to you and you finally need answers, you want to know me?""
Daniel had no defense.
Gabriel was right.
He had spent his life believing that family meant something permanent. That blood created an unbreakable bond. That no matter how much people hurt each other, the truth would eventually bring them home.
But he had never considered what happened to the children who grew up without the truth.
"You're right," Daniel said quietly.
"I should have found you.""
Gabriel's eyes flickered.
For one second, the anger wavered.
Then he looked past Daniel.
At Elisa.
"You.""
Elisa covered her mouth.
"Gabriel.""
He stepped backward.
"Don't come near me.""
She froze.
Tears streamed down her face.
"I've looked for you every day.""
"Really? Because I spent seventeen years being told my mother didn't want me.""
"I never abandoned you.""
"Then why wasn't I with you?""
Elisa opened her mouth, but no answer came.
Gabriel looked at Daniel.
"Do you know what they told me? They said my mother was unstable. They said she had died in an accident. They said my father was a businessman who never knew I existed.""
He held up the locket.
"I found this in Vivian Cross's office two days ago. Inside was a photograph of you holding me when I was a baby.""
Daniel felt his knees weaken.
"I never held you.""
"That's what I thought.""
Gabriel's voice broke.
"Then I found the medical records. The real ones. I found the hospital where I was born, the names of the doctors, and the signature of the woman who took me away.""
He turned toward Elisa.
"Yours.""
Elisa shook her head desperately.
"I didn't sign that document.""
"Then whose signature is it?""
Elisa looked toward the police vehicle where Daniel's father sat.
Gabriel followed her gaze.
His expression changed.
"Your father?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"He's alive.""
Gabriel stared at him.
For several seconds, he seemed unable to understand the words.
Then he laughed.
It was a hollow, bitter sound.
"Of course he is.""
He looked down at the locket.
"Of course the man who ruined everybody else's life gets to live long enough to watch us find out.""
Daniel moved closer.
"Gabriel, we need to talk.""
"No. You need to listen.""
The boy stepped toward him.
"My entire life, I've been told that powerful people make difficult decisions. That people like us have to accept what happens because someone older and richer knows better.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I'm done accepting it.""
Daniel recognized the expression.
He had worn it himself at twenty-five, when he first took over the family business and realized his father had concealed millions in debts.
It was the expression of someone who had finally discovered that obedience had been mistaken for love.
"What do you want?"" Daniel asked.
Gabriel looked toward the chapel.
"I want the truth.""
"You'll have it.""
"No. I want everyone else to have it, too.""
He pulled a small flash drive from his pocket.
"This contains copies of the files from the estate. The accounts. The payments to Martin.
The medical records. Everything.""
Daniel stared at the drive.
"Where did you get that?""
"Vivian gave it to me.""
"She's alive?""
Gabriel nodded.
"She contacted me three weeks ago. Told me who I was. Told me that my biological family had been hiding in plain sight while I grew up with strangers.""
Elisa pressed a hand against her chest.
"Why would she do that?""
"Because she's dying.""
Gabriel's voice was flat.
"She said she couldn't carry the secret anymore.""
Daniel looked toward Thomas, who had been listening nearby.
"Where is Vivian now?""
Gabriel hesitated.
"She wanted to meet you.""
"Where?""
"At her office. Tomorrow morning.""
Daniel took a step forward.
"Why didn't she come here?""
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"Because she knew what would happen if she did.""
He looked toward the police vehicle.
"And because she was afraid of him.""
Daniel followed his gaze.
His father sat behind the glass, watching them with a calm that felt almost supernatural.
Gabriel turned back.
"There's something else you need to know.""
Daniel waited.
"The boy in the photograph from the chapel isn't me.""
Daniel felt a chill.
"What?""
"The file said I was born at 4:17 a.m. But the photograph you saw was taken yesterday, and the boy standing beside Martin Vale was older than me.""
He paused.
"That boy is my twin.""
Elisa made a strangled sound.
Daniel stared at her.
"Another twin?""
She nodded slowly, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"His name is Michael.""
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"Vivian said he was raised by Martin Vale. She said Martin took him after he was born and told everyone he had died.""
Daniel felt sick.
Another child.
Another hidden identity.
Another life stolen by the people who claimed they were protecting the family.
"Where is Michael now?"" he asked.
Gabriel looked toward the road.
"He's the one who shot your mother.""
Daniel went still.
The gunman at the chapel.
The man who had attacked him.
The man who had called himself Martin's loyal servant.
His own son.
"Why?"" Daniel whispered.
"Because Martin told him you were responsible for everything that happened to his family.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I never even knew he existed.""
"That doesn't matter to him.""
Gabriel's eyes filled with tears.
"He's spent his entire life believing you got everything he was denied. A father. A name.
Money. A home.""
Daniel looked toward the ambulance, where his mother was being transported to the hospital.
"Did Michael know he was shooting his grandmother?""
Gabriel looked away.
"I don't think so.""
A police radio crackled.
Thomas listened, then turned sharply toward Daniel.
"Sir, we have a problem.""
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
"What now?""
"Martin's transport has been intercepted.""
Daniel's stomach dropped.
"By whom?""
Thomas looked toward the road.
"Two vehicles. One of them belongs to Vivian Cross.""
Gabriel went pale.
"No.""
Daniel grabbed his arm.
"Where is she going?""
Gabriel stared at the headlights appearing in the distance.
"To the only place my father ever felt safe.""
"Your father?""
Gabriel swallowed.
"Martin Vale.""
He looked at Daniel with sudden urgency.
"He's not my biological father. But he's the man who raised me. And if Vivian has him, she'll take him to the estate.""
Daniel's blood ran cold.
"Why?""
"Because there's something hidden beneath the house.""
Gabriel's voice dropped.
"Something that proves Martin didn't just help your father hide the truth.""
He paused.
"He's the one who killed your mother.""
Daniel stared at him.
"My mother is alive.""
"Your biological mother. Eleanor Whitmore.""
Gabriel shook his head.
"Daniel, I mean the woman who raised me. The woman Martin told me was my mother.""
For a moment, Daniel couldn't speak.
Gabriel continued.
"She died when I was nine. Martin told me she had cancer. But Vivian found the medical records.
There was no cancer. No treatment. No hospital admission.""
Daniel felt the pieces shift again.
"Then what happened to her?""
Gabriel looked toward the approaching vehicles.
"She discovered what Martin had done to Rose and Lily. She threatened to tell the police.""
His voice cracked.
"He killed her.""
Daniel stood motionless.
The boy before him had grown up believing a murderer was his father.
He had been trained to hate the man who had never known he existed.
And now that same boy was standing in front of Daniel, holding the evidence that could destroy everyone who had ever lied to them.
Daniel reached out carefully.
"Gabriel, you don't have to do this alone.""
The boy looked at his hand.
For a moment, Daniel thought he might take it.
Instead, Gabriel stepped back.
"I didn't come here for a family.""
"Then why did you come?""
Gabriel looked directly into his eyes.
"Because Michael is going to kill you.""
Daniel's phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A young man's voice came through the speaker.
"Hello, Daniel.""
Daniel recognized it immediately.
The gunman from the chapel.
Michael.
"Where are you?"" Daniel demanded.
Michael laughed softly.
"Somewhere your father can finally tell the truth.""
"Put him on the phone.""
"He's busy.""
"Michael, listen to me. You don't have to do this.""
"Don't call me that.""
The voice sharpened.
"Martin told me everything. He told me how you got to grow up in a mansion while I slept in a room above a garage. He told me how your mother chose you and abandoned me.""
"That's not true.""
"You don't know what's true!""
Michael's voice cracked.
"You don't know what it's like to grow up with a man who hits you whenever you ask about your mother. You don't know what it's like to watch him destroy photographs because he says your face reminds him of someone he hates.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
"Don't apologize.""
A pause.
Then Michael said, "I have Lily.""
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
"No.""
"She's safe. For now.""
"Michael, she's your sister.""
"She's a stranger.""
"She's a child.""
"So was I.""
Daniel gripped the phone.
"What do you want?""
Michael's voice softened.
"The flash drive. The documents. Everything Gabriel has.""
Gabriel's expression changed.
He shook his head and stepped away.
Daniel looked at him.
Michael continued.
"Bring them to the summer estate by midnight. Come alone, or Lily disappears the same way Rose did.""
Daniel's heart hammered.
"Michael, please—"
The call disconnected.
For several seconds, Daniel stood motionless.
Then he turned to Thomas.
"Get every available officer to the summer estate.""
Thomas nodded.
"And find Vivian Cross.""
Daniel looked at Gabriel.
The boy was staring at the ground, his hands trembling.
"Gabriel.""
He didn't look up.
"He's going to kill Lily," he whispered.
Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Not if I can stop him.""
Gabriel finally raised his eyes.
"You can't save everyone, Daniel.""
Daniel thought of Elisa, his mother, Rose, Lily, and the boy standing beside him.
All the people he had lost without ever knowing they were missing.
"Maybe not," he said.
"But I'm done letting other people decide who gets left behind.""
He turned toward the waiting vehicles.
As he walked, his phone vibrated again.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph.
Lily stood inside a dark room, clutching a piece of paper.
Beside her was a little girl with dark hair and a birthmark on her cheek.
Rose.
Beneath the image were four words.
*BOTH GIRLS. ONE CHOICE.*
Daniel stopped.
Because behind the two children stood Michael, holding a gun.
And beside him was a woman Daniel recognized from the photograph in his mother's box.
Vivian Cross.
She was pointing the weapon at Michael.
The message continued.
*MIDNIGHT. BRING THE TRUTH.*
May you like
Then another line appeared.
*OR YOUR FAMILY DIES.*
