Chapter 5: The Son They Tried to Take Away

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't move.

The words seemed to hang in the foyer, suspended beneath the chandelier.

I'm his biological father.

He looked at Adrian.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Victoria.

His wife was crying.

His brother was trembling.

And his son stood between them, looking as though the floor had disappeared beneath his feet.

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“No.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Daniel—”

“No!””

The shout sent Ethan recoiling.

Daniel immediately lowered his voice.

“Not you, son. I'm not angry with you.””

Ethan didn't answer.

He looked at Victoria.

“Is it true?””

Victoria wiped her cheeks.

“Ethan, please.””

“Is he my father?””

She looked away.

The teenager's face crumpled.

“Mom?””

Victoria finally nodded.

A small movement.

But it was enough.

Ethan dropped his notebook.

It struck the marble floor and opened, scattering several loose sheets.

He stared at the pages without seeing them.

Daniel bent down and picked up the notebook.

It was filled with mathematics exercises and handwritten notes.

Ordinary teenage things.

The same things the boy had been studying while the adults around him built an elaborate lie.

Daniel placed the notebook on the console.

Then he approached Ethan carefully.

“Listen to me.””

The boy looked at him.

“Nothing changes between us.””

Ethan's lips trembled.

“But he's my father.””

Daniel glanced at Adrian.

“Biologically, yes.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Then what does that make you?””

The question nearly broke him.

Daniel knelt in front of his son.

“I'm the man who held you when you came home from the hospital. I'm the man who taught you how to ride a bicycle. I'm the man who stayed awake when you had pneumonia.””

His voice cracked.

“I'm your dad, Ethan. Nothing that happened before you were born changes that.””

Ethan's eyes filled.

“Then why didn't Mom tell me?””

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

Victoria stood near the staircase, clutching the banister.

He slowly rose.

“That's a question for her.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You had seventeen years.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything!””

Adrian let out a bitter laugh.

“That's not the whole truth.””

Victoria turned on him.

“Don't you dare.””

Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Finish your sentence.””

Adrian stepped away from the wall.

“She wasn't afraid of losing you. She was afraid Ethan would learn why she married you.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Go on.””

Adrian glanced toward Ethan.

“Your father left a trust. You know that.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

His father had built the Mercer business from a small construction company into a national development group. When he died, he had divided much of his wealth among family members.

Daniel had inherited the company.

Adrian had disappeared before the estate was settled.

And Ethan had been named the primary beneficiary of a separate family trust, which would become fully accessible when he turned eighteen.

Daniel had never questioned that arrangement.

His father had adored his grandson.

The money was supposed to give Ethan a secure future.

Adrian continued.

“Victoria knew about the trust. She knew Ethan would control the remaining assets when he turned eighteen.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“That's why?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No. That's not how it happened.””

Adrian removed another document from his pocket.

“Look at the date.””

Daniel took it.

It was a copy of a financial statement, accompanied by several handwritten notes.

A series of transfers had been made from an account connected to the family trust.

The amounts were substantial.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

“Money Victoria moved,” Adrian replied.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Those were legitimate expenses!””

Daniel looked at the figures.

“Nearly half a million dollars?””

“I was managing household investments.””

“Without telling me?””

“You never cared about the details!””

Daniel turned another page.

There was a signature.

His signature.

But the handwriting wasn't his.

His stomach tightened.

“What's this?””

Adrian answered.

“Someone forged your approval.””

Victoria's mouth opened.

“That's a lie!””

Adrian looked at her.

“You gave me the documents.””

“I trusted you to handle them!””

“And you told me to make sure Ethan never saw the account statements.””

Daniel looked from one to the other.

The pieces began fitting together.

Ethan had found the photograph.

He had found the financial documents.

He had discovered that the stranger visiting the house was not a random guest.

And when he had started asking questions, Victoria had made him look dangerous.

She had turned his father against him before he could expose anything.

Daniel stared at her.

“The torn dress.””

Victoria said nothing.

“You staged the entire incident because Ethan was asking questions.””

“I was trying to stop him from making accusations!””

“He hadn't accused you of anything.””

“He was going through my things!””

“He was looking for the truth!””

Victoria's composure finally shattered.

“He was going to ruin my life!””

Ethan stepped forward.

“I never wanted to ruin your life.””

Victoria spun toward him.

“You had no idea what you were interfering with!””

“I just wanted to know why that man kept coming here!””

“Because you wouldn't stay out of things that didn't concern you!””

Daniel moved between them.

“Enough.””

Victoria's chest rose and fell.

She looked at Adrian.

“You promised me he wouldn't tell him.””

Adrian's expression changed.

Daniel turned slowly.

“What did she just say?””

Adrian looked away.

Victoria pressed her hands to her mouth.

Daniel felt another wave of betrayal.

“You both knew I would find out eventually.””

Neither answered.

“You had seventeen years to tell me.””

Adrian finally spoke.

“I was a coward.””

Daniel laughed without humor.

“That's the first honest thing you've said tonight.””

Adrian nodded.

“When Victoria told me she was pregnant, I wanted to tell you. I really did. But I had already made a terrible decision.

I knew what I'd done to my brother. I thought leaving would give you a chance to have a normal family.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You disappeared and left me to bury you.””

“I know.””

“You left our mother grieving.””

“I know.””

“And you came back when?””

“Two years ago.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Two years?””

Adrian nodded.

“Victoria contacted me.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“You brought him back?””

“She wanted help,” Adrian said.

“She had been moving money from the trust and needed someone to create false investment records. I refused at first.””

“But eventually you agreed.””

Adrian lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Daniel's voice was flat.

“And the embraces?””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“We had an affair again.””

Victoria began crying harder.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

The teenager was staring at the floor.

He had heard enough.

“Why did you keep coming here?”” Daniel asked Adrian.

“Because I wanted to know my son.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You wanted to know him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let Victoria accuse him?””

Adrian had no immediate answer.

Finally, he said, “I didn't know she'd go that far.””

“You knew she was lying.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Adrian nodded.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You stood in this house, hugged my wife, watched my son suffer, and said nothing.””

Adrian looked as though he wanted to defend himself.

But he didn't.

That was something, at least.

Daniel turned to Victoria.

“Did you actually believe Ethan was going to expose you?””

“He found the paternity report.””

“What report?””

Victoria swallowed.

“The one I kept in the study.””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“You knew about it?””

Adrian nodded.

The man reached inside his shirt and removed a sealed envelope.

“I brought the original.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a DNA test report.

The sample information listed three individuals.

Daniel Mercer.

Adrian Mercer.

Ethan Mercer.

The results confirmed that Adrian was Ethan's biological father.

Daniel read the page twice.

Then he placed it on the table.

His hands were shaking.

Ethan approached slowly.

“Dad?””

Daniel turned.

“I'm here.””

“Can I ask you something?””

“Anything.””

The boy looked at the report.

“Did you ever know?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Would you have treated me differently if you had?””

Daniel's face tightened.

He looked at his son.

And he knew the question wasn't really about biology.

It was about the last three months.

About the accusations.

About every moment Daniel had chosen his wife's tears over his son's truth.

“I don't know what I would have done about the adults,” he said honestly.

“But I would never have stopped being your father.””

Ethan wiped his cheek.

“Then why did you stop believing me?””

Daniel had no answer.

He couldn't offer a clever explanation.

He couldn't blame Victoria and pretend his own choices hadn't mattered.

So he said the only thing he could.

“Because I failed you.””

The boy looked away.

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel heard footsteps above them.

The housekeeper, Mrs. Collins, appeared at the top of the staircase.

She had been with the family for nearly twelve years.

She looked from Daniel to Victoria, then at the documents spread across the console.

“Mr. Mercer,” she said carefully.

Daniel turned.

“Yes?””

“I think there's something else you need to see.””

Victoria's face changed immediately.

“Margaret, go back to your room.””

Mrs. Collins didn't move.

She held a small silver flash drive.

“I found this in the laundry room earlier. Mrs. Mercer asked me to destroy it.””

Daniel extended his hand.

“What is it?””

Mrs. Collins descended slowly.

“Recordings. From the study computer.””

Victoria rushed toward her.

“Give that to me!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don't.””

Mrs. Collins placed the drive in his palm.

“There are several audio files,” she said.

“One was recorded yesterday.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

Her eyes were wide.

“What does it contain?””

Mrs. Collins glanced toward Ethan.

“Mrs. Mercer was speaking with someone about what she planned to do if the boy turned eighteen and gained access to the trust.””

Daniel inserted the flash drive into his phone adapter.

A list of recordings appeared.

The final file was titled:

*THE PLAN — BEFORE ETHAN'S BIRTHDAY.*

Daniel tapped it.

Victoria whispered, “Please don't.””

The recording began.

Her voice filled the foyer.

Calm.

Clear.

And completely unmistakable.

“If Daniel keeps believing me, Ethan will be out of this house before his birthday. Once he's gone, Adrian can help me transfer the remaining money. There won't be anyone left to challenge us.””

Then came Adrian's voice.

“But he's your son.””

Victoria answered without hesitation.

“He's the biggest obstacle I've ever had.””

Daniel stopped the recording.

The silence was unbearable.

He turned toward his wife.

“You called your own child an obstacle.””

Victoria backed away.

“Daniel, I was angry.””

“No.””

He looked at the DNA report, then at the flash drive.

“You were planning to steal his future.””

Victoria's face collapsed.

And suddenly, the frightened boy upstairs wasn't the one who needed to be protected from the adults in the house.

The adults were the danger.
