Chapter 4: The Man Waiting Outside

The black SUV disappeared around the corner, but Daniel didn't relax.

He stood beside the window, gripping his cane so tightly that his knuckles turned white. Outside, the evening wind pushed dry leaves across the driveway. Every passing headlight made him tense.

"Marcus, take Michael upstairs and pack a bag," he said.

"Nothing elaborate. Clothes, identification, medication if he needs any. We leave in five minutes.""

I stared at him.

"You're going to explain everything before I take my son anywhere.""

Daniel turned.

"That man just received confirmation that we have the key to Emily's second safe. He has spent six years trying to keep its contents hidden. Do you really want to waste five minutes arguing about whether I'm being dramatic?""

"That man may have threatened my family, and you're asking me to trust you after you let us believe you were dead.""

"I know how it sounds.""

"Then make it sound better.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Emily came to my office four months before she died. She brought bank statements, insurance records, and a copy of a document bearing your signature. She said someone had been accessing her private accounts.""

I glanced at Sarah.

She stood near the staircase, pale and motionless.

"Whose signature was forged?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"Yours.""

My stomach twisted.

"What did the document authorize?""

"An amendment to Emily's life insurance policy. It attempted to redirect the proceeds from Michael's trust to a company called Hale Family Holdings.""

I had never heard of it.

Daniel continued.

"The amendment was rejected because Emily had established additional verification procedures. But someone had obtained enough personal information to make the attempt.""

"Who owned the company?""

"Victor Hale.""

Sarah suddenly laughed.

It was a sharp, brittle sound.

"You make him sound like some criminal mastermind. Victor was a consultant. He helped me organize my finances.""

Daniel faced her.

"Your finances?""

Sarah folded her arms.

"Yes, Daniel. My finances. I'm allowed to know people.""

"Not when you use them to steal from a child.""

"I never stole anything!""

Michael stood behind me, holding the cherrywood box against his chest.

Sarah glanced at him.

"You don't understand what you're doing, Michael. Your father is letting a bitter old man fill his head with lies.""

Michael shook his head.

"You took Mom's box.""

"Because you wouldn't stop obsessing over it!""

"You told me she wasn't my mother anymore because she was dead.""

Sarah's mouth tightened.

"I told you that you needed to stop living in the past.""

Michael looked at the silver moon engraved on the lid.

"My mother is the reason I'm here.""

Sarah rolled her eyes.

"Oh, please.""

I took a step toward her.

"Don't.""

She stared at me.

For once, she didn't answer.

Daniel moved to the front door and checked the lock.

"Marcus, I need you to understand something. Emily didn't simply leave Michael some keepsakes. She built a legal structure to protect his future. If Victor has been trying to reach those documents, he believes they contain evidence that could expose him.""

"And Sarah?""

Daniel looked at my wife.

"Sarah knows more than she's admitting.""

Sarah snatched her coat from the banister.

"I'm not staying here to be interrogated.""

I blocked the doorway.

"You're not going anywhere with Victor.""

"You don't own me!""

"No. But I do own this house with you, and I'm not letting you turn it into a crime scene and then disappear before we know what happened.""

She lifted her chin.

"You're threatening me?""

"I'm telling you that if you leave, I'll call the police and report the stolen property, the forged document, and everything you've said tonight.""

Her expression hardened.

"You wouldn't dare.""

I took out my phone.

"Try me.""

For several seconds, we stared at each other.

Then Sarah lowered her eyes.

Daniel took the opportunity to lead Michael toward the staircase.

"Come on, son. We need to move.""

Michael didn't follow immediately.

He looked at Sarah.

"Did you know my mom was going to die?""

The question was quiet.

Almost childlike.

Sarah's face crumpled for half a second before she recovered.

"I had nothing to do with your mother's death.""

"Then why did you say she wasn't supposed to survive the operation?""

Sarah opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then she looked at me.

"Because Victor told me the operation was dangerous. He said Emily was making plans that would destroy our lives if she survived.""

"What plans?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not!""

Her voice cracked.

"I didn't know she would die, Marcus. I swear to you, I didn't know.""

I wanted to believe that she was telling the truth.

But then I remembered the way she'd lunged for Michael, the forged signature, and the terror in her eyes when she'd seen the red envelope.

I no longer knew which parts of my marriage had been real.

Daniel guided Michael upstairs.

I stayed behind long enough to call the police.

I reported the theft and the suspected forgery. I also explained that a man connected to the documents might pose a threat to my family. The dispatcher asked whether anyone had been physically injured and whether the suspected person was still nearby.

I gave her the details I knew.

Before ending the call, I asked for an officer to come to the house.

Then I went upstairs.

Michael was sitting on his bed, stuffing shirts into a backpack. The keepsake box rested on his pillow.

Daniel stood beside the desk, examining the photograph Michael had taken.

"There's something odd about this," he said.

I stepped closer.

"What?""

Daniel pointed to the document beneath the box.

"Look at the date.""

I leaned forward.

Three weeks earlier.

Then I noticed a second date printed near the bottom.

The document referred to an amendment executed six years ago, shortly before Emily's final hospitalization.

"That can't be right," I said.

"Emily was in the hospital then.""

"Exactly.""

Daniel traced a line with his finger.

"This amendment claims she personally authorized the transfer of the trust's control to Sarah.""

Michael went still.

"Mom never met Sarah alone before she died.""

Sarah had entered our lives two years after Emily's death. We'd met at a charity fundraiser, and our relationship had developed slowly. She had seemed patient with Michael at first. She'd bought him books, helped him with school projects, and told everyone how much she admired his resilience.

I'd mistaken performance for kindness.

Daniel shook his head.

"Someone could have forged Emily's signature.""

"Could the document be real?"" I asked.

"Not without corroboration. But if Victor obtained access to the trust records, he could have used this paper to convince financial institutions that Sarah was entitled to control certain assets.""

I looked at the box.

"What exactly did Emily leave Michael?""

Daniel hesitated.

"More than money.""

He lifted the box carefully and examined the bottom.

"Emily was meticulous. She sometimes hid small items inside the lining.""

Michael leaned forward.

"There's a loose corner.""

He pointed to the velvet lining near the hinge.

Daniel used the tip of his pocketknife to lift it gently.

A tiny brass compartment opened beneath the wood.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Michael reached for it, then stopped.

"Should I?""

Daniel nodded.

"It's yours.""

Michael unfolded the paper.

It contained a handwritten message in Emily's familiar script.

My darling boy, if you are reading this, someone has tried to take away the one thing I promised you would always remain yours: the truth.

Michael pressed the paper against his chest.

I put a hand on his shoulder.

He continued reading.

Trust Daniel. Trust your father, even when fear makes him slow to understand. The second safe contains the records, but the red envelope contains the reason I had to hide them.

The message ended with a final sentence.

Whatever happens, never let anyone convince you that you were unwanted.

Michael's face crumpled.

I pulled him into my arms.

"I'm sorry, son.""

He clung to me, crying against my shirt.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you everything sooner," I whispered.

"I should have listened.""

Daniel turned away, giving us a moment.

Then his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and answered.

"Yes?""

I watched his expression change.

"What do you mean, he's already there?""

He listened for several seconds.

Then he ended the call.

I stood.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked at the key in Michael's hand.

"The storage facility manager just called me. Someone has been asking about Emily's safe.""

"Victor?""

"No. A woman.""

Sarah.

We all looked toward the doorway.

She was gone.

The bedroom window stood open, and the curtains fluttered in the night breeze.

Michael rushed to the window.

"She climbed down?""

I pulled him back.

"Stay away from the window.""

Daniel hurried to the stairs.

I followed, calling Sarah's name as we reached the front hall.

The front door was still locked.

Her coat was gone from the banister, and her car keys had disappeared.

Then I noticed the small side door leading to the garage.

It was ajar.

A car engine started outside.

By the time I reached the driveway, Sarah's car was already turning onto the street.

She stopped briefly at the intersection.

For one second, I could see her face through the windshield.

She wasn't looking back at the house.

She was looking at her phone.

Then she accelerated into the darkness.

Daniel stood beside me.

"She knows where we're going.""

I tightened my grip on the brass key.

"Then we get there first.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No, Marcus. If Sarah reaches Victor before we do, she could destroy the evidence.""

He looked toward the road where her car had vanished.

"And if she tells him what was inside the red envelope, he won't need to wait for us at the safe.""

"What will he do?""

Daniel's answer was almost inaudible.

"He'll go after the only person who can authenticate Emily's final message.""

I looked back at the house.

"Who?""

May you like

Daniel met my eyes.

"Her surgeon.""
