Chapter 9: The Man Everyone Believed Was Dead

I stared at the photograph.

Then I zoomed in.

The man standing beside the newborn bassinet had the same dark hair, the same narrow jaw, and the same small scar above his left eyebrow as the man in the framed photograph at the Cole family house.

Ethan Cole.

The man who had supposedly died six years earlier.

The man whose funeral Vanessa had attended.

The man whose ashes were buried in a cemetery outside town.

“That's impossible,” Michael whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I know what I saw.””

I looked at her.

“You're telling me Ethan is alive?””

“I don't know.””

“You just identified him!””

“Because I recognize his face!””

Michael took the phone from me.

He studied the photograph.

Then he zoomed in on the man's right hand.

There was a silver ring.

His expression changed.

“That was Ethan's wedding ring.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Michael looked at her.

“You're certain?””

She nodded.

“He never took it off.””

I felt a chill run through me.

If Ethan was alive, then every document we had seen needed to be questioned.

His death certificate.

The accident report.

The genetic records.

The funeral.

And perhaps even the identity of the man whose ashes had been buried.

I looked at Detective Brooks, who had returned after receiving my call.

“Detective, we need to talk.””

He examined the photograph.

Then he enlarged it on his own phone.

“Where did you get this?””

“An anonymous message.””

“Do you recognize the man?””

I nodded.

“Everyone in this room does.””

He studied the image for a long moment.

Then he said:

“I'm going to need the original file.””

I sent it to him.

He immediately called another officer.

“Run facial comparison against the original identification photographs from the Cole accident case. And contact the cemetery. I want the burial records reviewed.””

Michael sat down.

“My brother can't be alive.””

The detective didn't respond.

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

Then she whispered:

“There's something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

“The night Ethan died, I didn't see his body.””

Michael looked at her sharply.

“What?””

“The police told me the accident had been severe. They said identification had been completed through medical records and personal effects.””

“You attended the funeral,” Michael said.

“Yes.””

“You saw the coffin.””

“It was closed.””

Michael stood.

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because I believed he was dead!””

Detective Brooks raised a hand.

“Everyone needs to remain calm.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you ever see the death certificate?””

She nodded.

“Of course.””

“Did you check it?””

“No.””

“Did you see the medical examiner's report?””

She shook her head.

The detective made a note.

“Mr. Carter, I need to ask your wife a few questions privately.””

I didn't like it.

But I stepped aside.

As the detective spoke with Vanessa, Michael and I moved toward the corridor.

He leaned against the wall.

“I don't understand any of this.””

“Neither do I.””

“My mother knew something. Ethan knew something. My father knew something. And somehow, every road leads back to Claire.””

I looked at him.

“What do you know about your father?””

Michael hesitated.

“He was controlling. He believed he could fix anything with money. When Ethan was diagnosed, he took over every medical decision.””

“Did he ever hurt either of you?””

Michael looked away.

“He never hit us.””

“That wasn't my question.””

He rubbed his face.

“My father could make you feel like you had no right to disagree with him. He controlled the family finances, the businesses, even the house my mother lived in.””

“Did Ethan ever try to leave?””

“Several times.””

“Why didn't he?””

Michael gave a bitter laugh.

“Because Dad always reminded him that the family would collapse without him.””

I thought about the recording.

Don't let Dad convince you that he did this for us.

Something about that sentence bothered me.

Then I remembered the photograph.

Ethan beside the newborn bassinet.

Three weeks earlier.

“Michael, where was your father three weeks ago?””

Michael frowned.

“Why?””

“Think.””

He pulled out his phone.

“Let me check.””

He searched through his messages.

Then his face changed.

“He told me he was visiting a specialist in Chicago.””

“Which specialist?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you speak to him?””

“No. He said he needed a few days alone.””

I stared at him.

“Do you have the hotel information?””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Before I could respond, Detective Brooks came out.

“Mr. Carter, your wife has agreed to provide a statement.””

I looked through the doorway.

Vanessa was sitting with her hands folded.

Her face was pale.

The detective continued.

“She also says she knows where Claire is likely to be.””

“Where?””

“At an office building owned by the Cole family.””

Michael looked up.

“My father has an office there.””

Detective Brooks nodded.

“That's where we're going.””

We left the hospital just before sunset.

My mother had brought Lily back and was waiting in the family lounge.

When she saw me, she immediately stood.

“Daniel, what's happening?””

I hugged her.

“It's complicated.””

She looked at the baby in my arms.

“Is she okay?””

“For now.””

Lily approached slowly.

“Daddy?””

I crouched.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

“Did you find Mommy?””

“Yes.””

“Did you find my sister?””

I smiled weakly.

“She's right here.””

Lily looked at the baby.

Then at me.

“Can I hold her?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had followed us into the lounge.

Her eyes filled.

She nodded.

I sat down and carefully placed the baby in Lily's arms.

Lily held her as though she were made of glass.

“Hi, little sister,” she whispered.

The baby opened her eyes.

Lily smiled.

“I brought you something.””

She reached into her backpack and took out a small drawing.

It showed two girls holding hands beneath a yellow sun.

At the bottom, she had written:

*ME AND MY SISTER FOREVER.*

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

For the first time that day, she seemed to understand what she had nearly destroyed.

Lily looked up.

“Mommy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can I still be her big sister?””

Vanessa knelt beside her.

“Always.””

“Even if she's not Daddy's real baby?””

The question silenced everyone.

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she looked at Lily.

“She's your sister because she's part of our family. Nobody can take that away from you.””

Lily nodded.

Then she gently kissed the baby's forehead.

I felt something loosen in my chest.

Whatever happened next, I wasn't going to let the adults' secrets ruin these two children's lives.

My phone vibrated.

Detective Brooks was waiting by the entrance.

I kissed Lily's head.

“Grandma will stay with you.””

“Where are you going?””

“To find out what's happening.””

Lily looked worried.

“Will you come back?””

“Always.””

The Cole family office occupied the top two floors of an old commercial building downtown.

A security guard recognized Michael and allowed us inside.

Detective Brooks led the way.

The office was dark.

Most of the desks were empty.

But a light was visible beneath the door of the executive suite.

Michael approached it.

“Dad?””

No answer.

He tried the handle.

It was unlocked.

Inside, a desk lamp illuminated several documents.

A computer sat open.

On the desk was a framed photograph of Ethan and Michael as children.

Beside it was a second photograph.

Ethan standing beside a newborn baby.

The date on the back was three weeks earlier.

I walked closer.

The baby's face was partly visible.

A pink hospital blanket covered her body.

The same hospital logo appeared in the corner of the photograph.

I turned toward Michael.

“That's the other baby.””

He nodded slowly.

Detective Brooks photographed the image.

Then he opened a drawer.

Inside were several passports, a stack of bank statements, and a folder labeled:

*PROJECT EMMA — FINAL TRANSFER.*

Michael picked it up.

His hands were shaking.

“Project Emma?””

He opened the folder.

The first page contained a list of dates.

The second contained photographs of the two newborn girls.

The third contained a document that made my stomach turn.

It was a legal agreement.

The document stated that one newborn child would be placed with the Whitmore family, while the other would remain with Vanessa Carter.

But there was a handwritten note at the bottom.

The two children must never be informed of their shared biological origins.

Michael stared.

“Who signed this?””

Detective Brooks examined the bottom of the page.

There were two signatures.

One belonged to Claire Bennett.

The other belonged to a man whose name was printed in bold.

*ETHAN COLE.*

Michael staggered backward.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Michael?””

He shook his head.

“That's his signature.””

The detective picked up the document.

“Mr. Cole, do you believe your brother signed this?””

“I know his handwriting.””

I looked at the date.

It was from three weeks earlier.

Three weeks earlier, Ethan was supposedly dead.

Then someone behind us spoke.

“He signed it because he wanted both children protected.””

We turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

He was wearing a dark coat and holding a leather briefcase.

His hair was shorter than in the photographs.

But his face was unmistakable.

Ethan Cole.

Michael stopped breathing.

“Brother?””

The man looked at him.

“Hello, Michael.””

Vanessa wasn't there to see it.

But I could imagine the look on her face.

The man everyone had buried was standing in front of us.

Alive.

Detective Brooks immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan Cole, I'm Detective Samuel Brooks. I need you to remain where you are.””

Ethan raised both hands.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

Michael moved toward him.

“You're alive?””

Ethan nodded.

“I'm sorry.””

Michael's voice broke.

“Six years. Six years, and you let us believe you were dead?””

“I didn't have a choice.””

“You let Mom die believing she had lost you!””

Ethan looked down.

His expression changed.

“I know.””

Michael shoved him.

“You don't know anything!””

Detective Brooks stepped between them.

“Mr. Cole, we need answers. Start with the accident.””

Ethan looked at the documents.

Then at the photograph of the two newborn girls.

He took a long breath.

“My father arranged the accident.””

Michael went completely still.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“He discovered that I had copied the original fertility records. He knew I was going to expose what he'd done.””

Detective Brooks frowned.

“Are you saying your father deliberately caused the crash?””

Ethan nodded.

“I survived. But he made sure everyone believed I hadn't.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you come forward?””

“Because he threatened my family.””

“Your family?””

Ethan looked at the photograph.

“Vanessa. Michael. And the two children.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Then why is my wife involved in this?””

Ethan looked directly at me.

“Because Vanessa wasn't supposed to be the mother of either child.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

He walked toward the desk.

Then he pulled out a final document.

It was an original genetic report.

At the top was a name I had never expected to see.

*DONOR: DANIEL CARTER.*

I stared.

“What is this?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Daniel, your genetic material was collected years before you met Vanessa.””

I felt the room spin.

“How?””

He placed another document beside it.

A medical consent form.

My signature was at the bottom.

I recognized it immediately.

It was from a hospital visit I had made years earlier, after a serious accident when I was twenty-three.

I had been unconscious for two days.

My family had been told that doctors collected blood samples for medical testing.

I had never known those samples had been preserved.

Ethan pointed to the report.

“Your sample was used to create the embryo that resulted in the baby Vanessa delivered.””

I stared at him.

Then I looked at the photographs.

The two babies.

The disputed donor records.

The hidden agreement.

“Are you telling me that Grace is biologically mine?””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

I couldn't breathe.

“But the maternal contribution…”

“Your wife isn't the genetic mother.””

I looked at him.

“Then who is?””

Ethan turned toward Michael.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

“Rebecca Cole.””

Michael staggered.

“Our mother?””

Ethan nodded.

“Your mother donated the egg. Your father arranged the procedure. And Claire altered the records to hide what they had done.””

I looked at the paperwork again.

“So the baby is genetically mine and Rebecca's?””

“Yes.””

“And Michael's sample?””

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“That was used in the other embryo.””

Michael grabbed the edge of the desk.

I looked at Ethan.

“Then why did Vanessa believe she was carrying your child?””

“Because she was told the embryo contained my genetic material.””

“Who told her?””

Ethan looked at the doorway.

Then he said:

“Your father-in-law.””

I frowned.

“My father-in-law?””

Ethan nodded.

“Daniel, there's one more person you need to understand.””

He reached into his coat and removed a photograph.

It showed a woman standing beside him outside the fertility clinic.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa.

But the date printed on the back was impossible.

It was six months after Ethan's supposed death.

I looked up.

“Vanessa knew you were alive?””

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he placed the photograph on the desk.

Then he said:

“She knew I was alive before she married you.””

And just as I was about to ask why my wife had kept such an enormous secret, Detective Brooks received a call.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression darkened.

“Mr. Carter, we need to return to the hospital immediately.””

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“Your wife has disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

May you like

Then he added:

“And your daughter Lily is missing too.””
