Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile

Dad took off his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders.

His hands trembled as he pulled the fabric closed beneath my chin. Rainwater dripped from my hair onto his sleeves, but he seemed not to notice.

“Look at me, sweetheart,” he said.

“Are you hurt anywhere else?””

I shook my head.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

She stood beneath the porch light with one hand resting on the door, her expression caught somewhere between outrage and concern.

“Daniel, please,” she said.

“Let me explain.””

Dad didn't look away from me.

“Emily, did Vanessa put you outside?””

I hesitated.

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Emily, don't you dare twist this into something it wasn't.””

Dad rose slowly.

“I asked my daughter a question.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“And I'm trying to explain that she became disrespectful. She screamed at me, threw things around the kitchen, and threatened to make my life miserable if I didn't give her money.””

I stared at her in disbelief.

“What? I never—”

“Don't interrupt!”” Vanessa snapped.

Dad turned sharply.

“Do not speak to her like that.””

The words landed with such force that even I froze.

Vanessa blinked.

For years, she had controlled every conversation in that house. Dad had always encouraged us to work things out calmly, and she had learned to use that patience to her advantage.

Now he was standing between us.

And she didn't know what to do with him.

“Daniel,” she said softly, “you're exhausted. You've just driven home in terrible weather. Let's get everyone inside, have dinner, and discuss this privately.””

Dad glanced at the bags scattered across the driveway.

“Why is her luggage outside?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then she gave a small, disbelieving laugh.

“She packed because she wanted to leave.””

I shook my head.

“No, Dad. She told me to pack.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Emily!””

Dad pointed toward the house.

“Enough.””

He crouched to gather my clothes, carefully picking up the sweater that had fallen into a puddle. When he found my mother's photograph, his fingers stopped.

The picture showed Mom sitting on a park bench, her head tilted back in laughter while I leaned against her shoulder.

Dad brushed rain from the glass.

“Your mother's picture,” he whispered.

Something broke in his voice.

He slipped the photograph into his coat pocket, then picked up my bags.

“Let's get you inside.””

Vanessa moved aside reluctantly.

The moment we entered the hallway, she reached for Dad's arm.

“Daniel, I need you to understand something. I've been dealing with Emily's attitude for months. She refuses to respect my authority, and every time I try to discipline her, she runs to you.””

Dad pulled his arm away.

“She was outside in the rain without shoes.””

“Because she refused to calm down!””

“She has red marks on her wrist.””

Vanessa glanced at my arm.

I watched her calculate her next move.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to stop her from running into the street.””

I stared at her.

“That isn't true.””

Vanessa pressed a hand to her chest.

“Daniel, she's lying.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Both of you, sit down.””

He guided me to the living room sofa, then remained standing near the fireplace.

Vanessa chose the armchair closest to him.

She immediately reached for a tissue from the box on the side table.

“I have sacrificed so much for this family,” she said.

“I gave up weekends, social events, even opportunities at work because I wanted to make this house a home. And this is what I get?””

Dad rubbed a hand over his face.

“Vanessa, I appreciate everything you've done.””

I felt my stomach sink.

There it was.

The familiar moment when her tears became more important than my words.

But Dad continued.

“However, I need to hear what happened today. From the beginning.””

Vanessa sniffed.

“Emily demanded that you buy her an expensive laptop. I told her we couldn't afford it right now, and she became furious. She said I had no right to tell her what she could have because you owned the house.””

I opened my mouth.

Dad raised one hand gently.

“Let her finish.””

Vanessa continued, her voice growing stronger.

“She called me a gold digger. She said you would always choose her over me. Then she threw her bag down the stairs and threatened to leave. I thought letting her cool off outside was the safest option.””

My heart pounded.

“Dad, that's not what happened.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“You should be ashamed of yourself.””

Dad's voice cut through the room.

“Vanessa, stop.””

Silence fell.

He looked at me.

“Tell me your side, Emily. Take your time.””

I told him about the conversation in the kitchen, the argument, and the order to pack. I explained how Vanessa had taken my phone and threatened to accuse me of attacking her if I told him the truth.

When I finished, Dad remained very still.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Unbelievable.””

Dad looked at her.

“Did you take her phone?””

“I confiscated it.””

“Why?””

“Because she was being disrespectful.””

“Did you tell her to pack her belongings?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I may have told her she should leave if she couldn't follow the rules.””

“And did you physically put her outside?””

“I did not throw her out.””

Dad glanced at my wrist.

“Then how did she get those marks?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“She grabbed the doorframe. I was trying to keep her from making a scene.””

I looked down at my hands.

I knew what came next. Vanessa would cry harder. Dad would feel trapped between us. He would tell me she shouldn't have done it, but he would ask me to forgive her because she was his wife.

That was how every confrontation had ended before.

But this time, Dad didn't sit beside Vanessa.

He walked to the kitchen.

I heard him open a drawer, move something around, and then return with his phone.

“What are you doing?”” Vanessa asked.

“Checking something.””

“Checking what?””

Dad tapped the screen.

“I received an alert from our home security system while I was on the road. The front door camera detected movement, followed by repeated opening and closing.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

She recovered quickly.

“So? I opened the door. Is that a crime?””

“No,” Dad said.

“But the camera records video.””

My heart skipped.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You can't be serious.””

Dad turned the phone toward himself and began scrolling through the security feed.

“I installed those cameras after the packages started disappearing from the porch. I told you they recorded the entrance and driveway.””

“You never said you were reviewing them.””

“I didn't think I needed to announce every time I checked my own security system.””

Vanessa stood.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous. You should trust your wife.””

Dad looked up.

“I trusted you when I left my daughter in your care.””

The room went silent.

He pressed a button.

A short video appeared on the screen.

At first, it showed the empty hallway. Then Vanessa entered the frame, followed by me carrying my overnight bag.

The camera's microphone picked up every word.

“Pack your things.””

Then my voice.

“Where am I supposed to go?””

Vanessa's recorded voice answered, clear and cold.

“That's not my problem.””

Dad's expression became unreadable.

The video continued.

It showed Vanessa pulling me through the doorway, throwing my bag into the rain, and shoving my backpack onto the driveway.

Then came the sentence that made Dad stop breathing for a moment.

“Your father trusts me. He believes every word I say.””

Vanessa lunged toward the phone.

“Turn that off!””

Dad stepped away.

“Don't touch me.””

“Daniel, you don't understand the context!””

He replayed the final seconds.

The recording captured Vanessa's face as she leaned toward me.

“If you tell him some dramatic story about how I treated you, I'll tell him you became violent and attacked me. Who do you think he'll believe?””

Dad lowered the phone.

His eyes were wet.

For a moment, I thought he was crying because of me.

Then he looked at Vanessa, and I realized he was crying because he finally understood what he had allowed to happen.

“You threatened my daughter,” he said.

Vanessa's voice rose.

“She provoked me!””

“She is seventeen years old!””

“And I'm your wife!””

Dad took a long breath.

“Yes,” he said.

“You are.””

Vanessa straightened, apparently encouraged by those words.

“Exactly. So let's stop this ridiculous performance and talk like adults.””

Dad looked at the screen again.

Then he asked a question I had never heard him ask her before.

“Vanessa, how many times have you done this when I wasn't home?””

May you like

She went completely still.

And in that silence, Dad understood that the video might not be the whole story.
