Chapter 5: The Evidence Hidden in Her Mother's Things

Daniel ran upstairs.

He found Lily standing beside her bed, clutching the framed photograph of Emily against her chest. Vanessa stood near the doorway with an open suitcase at her feet.

Several of Lily's belongings had already been placed inside it.

Her stuffed rabbit.

Two dresses.

A pair of pajamas.

And the little wooden music box Daniel had given her on her sixth birthday.

“What are you doing?”” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa turned sharply.

“I was packing her things.””

“Why?””

“Because perhaps she would be happier somewhere else for a while.””

Lily shook her head violently.

“No! I want to stay with Daddy!””

Daniel crossed the room and pulled his daughter close.

“You're staying right here.””

Vanessa pointed at the suitcase.

“You're making a terrible mistake. You have no idea what your brother is capable of.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then tell me.””

She hesitated.

He lowered his voice.

“Tell me what you know about the other account.””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the hallway.

“Not here.””

“Why not?””

“Because Michael is still downstairs.””

“Good. Then he can hear you, too.””

She grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

“Please. You don't understand. If I tell you everything, he'll destroy me.””

Daniel pulled his arm free.

“You were willing to destroy my daughter to protect yourself.””

Vanessa recoiled.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find a response.

Lily tugged on Daniel's jacket.

“Daddy, can I show you something?””

He immediately turned to her.

“Of course, sweetheart.””

She walked to her wardrobe and knelt beside a small storage box covered in stickers. She lifted the lid and moved aside several drawings, a broken bracelet, and a handful of colorful stones.

Beneath them lay a folded piece of paper.

“I found this in Vanessa's purse,” Lily whispered.

“I didn't know what it meant, so I hid it.””

Daniel unfolded the paper.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Michael's business account. The recipient was an address belonging to a private investment firm.

The subject line read: Final transfer authorization.

Beneath it was a list of account numbers and an instruction to move funds from Lily's trust into a holding company.

Daniel read the message twice.

The date matched the largest withdrawal.

At the bottom was a sentence that made his blood run cold.

Once the funds clear, destroy the original records and make sure Daniel never learns about Emily's second document.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What second document?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

He held up the email.

“Then why were you keeping this?””

“Because Michael told me to hold it until he asked for it.””

“And why did you hide it in your purse?””

“Because I was afraid of him.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“I know what I did was wrong. I know I should never have taken Lily's money or spoken to her the way I did. But Michael is not the man you think he is.””

Daniel glanced toward the hallway.

“Then let's hear it from him.””

He took Lily's hand and led her downstairs.

Michael was standing near the front door, speaking on his phone. When he saw them, he ended the call.

“What now?””

Daniel held up the email.

Michael's expression changed instantly.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my daughter's room.””

Michael turned toward Vanessa.

“You told me you destroyed it.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I couldn't!””

“You had one job!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Don't speak to her.””

Michael laughed in disbelief.

“Now you're protecting Vanessa? After everything she's done?””

“I'm protecting my daughter from both of you.””

He placed the email beside the bank records.

“Explain the holding company.””

Michael's eyes moved across the page.

“It's a business account.””

“Registered under a false name?””

“It's a legitimate investment structure.””

“Then why does the email tell you to destroy the original records?””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“Because those records contain confidential information.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You stole nearly half a million dollars from a child's trust.””

“I borrowed it!””

“You forged my authorization.””

“I was going to pay it back!””

“You involved my wife.””

Michael's eyes flashed.

“She involved herself.””

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh through her tears.

“You told me it was temporary. You told me Daniel would never find out. You said the money would be replaced before Lily turned eighteen.””

Michael turned on her.

“And you agreed!””

“Because you told me the company was going to collapse!””

“It was!””

“You said you had everything under control!””

Michael slammed his hand onto the coffee table.

“Enough!””

Lily screamed.

Daniel immediately gathered her against his chest.

Michael froze.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was Lily's frightened breathing.

Daniel looked at his brother.

“You will never raise your voice at my daughter again.””

Michael straightened his jacket.

“You think you're going to win this? You have no idea what that second document contains.””

“Then tell me.””

Michael's mouth twisted.

“Ask your wife.””

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

She looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.

“Vanessa?””

She sat down slowly.

“Emily discovered that Michael had been using company funds for personal expenses long before he touched Lily's trust. She kept copies of everything.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that have to do with you?””

Vanessa pressed her hands together.

“Michael approached me after you and I got married. He said Emily had left behind documents that could ruin him. He asked me to help him find them.””

“And you agreed.””

“I didn't know what I was getting into.””

“You took the money.””

She lowered her head.

“Yes.””

“You lied to Lily.””

“Yes.””

“You stole her mother's keepsakes.””

Vanessa's shoulders began shaking.

“Yes.””

Daniel felt a cold, unfamiliar distance settle over him.

He had once loved Vanessa. Or perhaps he had loved the version of her she had shown him: the woman who brought Lily books, who smiled at family dinners, who promised that she wanted to build a home where his daughter would always feel welcome.

Now he wondered how much of it had been real.

“Where is the silver box?”” he asked.

Vanessa covered her face.

“I sold the necklace.””

Lily made a small, wounded sound.

Daniel tightened his arms around her.

“To whom?””

“A private jeweler.””

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

“Where is the letter?””

“I kept it.””

“Where?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“In my closet. Behind the false panel in the shoe cabinet.””

Daniel handed Lily to Margaret, who had arrived moments earlier with a colleague and was standing near the entrance. She had heard enough to understand the urgency.

“Please take her somewhere quiet,” he said.

Margaret nodded and led Lily into the study.

Daniel turned back to Vanessa.

“Get the letter.””

She hesitated.

Michael moved toward her.

“Don't you dare.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Touch her, and you'll answer for that, too.””

Michael's face twisted with fury.

“You've always thought you were better than me.””

“No. I trusted you. That was my mistake.””

Vanessa ran upstairs.

Daniel followed her to the bedroom, keeping enough distance that she could not claim he had threatened her.

She opened the shoe cabinet and removed several pairs of expensive heels. Then she pressed a hidden latch.

A narrow panel slid open.

Inside was Emily's silver box.

Daniel felt his breath catch.

The flower-shaped clasp was scratched, but the box was intact.

Beside it lay a small bundle of papers wrapped in a silk scarf.

Vanessa reached for the box.

Daniel picked it up first.

“Don't.””

She withdrew her hand.

He opened the lid.

Emily's necklace was gone, but the photograph remained. So did a small envelope bearing Lily's name.

Daniel gently removed the envelope.

The handwriting was Emily's.

He unfolded the letter.

My darling Lily,

If you are reading this, you may be old enough to understand that people sometimes do unkind things because they are frightened, greedy, or unable to admit they have made mistakes.

Never let their choices convince you that you are unworthy of love.

You were my greatest joy. You were the reason I fought through every difficult day.

I have left you money to help you build a future, but money is not what makes you valuable. You are valuable because you are you.

And if anyone ever tells you that your father doesn't love you, remember this: I chose him to be your father because I knew he would fight for you, even when the truth was painful.

Daniel stopped reading.

His vision blurred.

Vanessa stood motionless beside him.

“I didn't read that part,” she whispered.

Daniel folded the letter carefully.

“You read enough to know it mattered.””

He placed the silver box inside his jacket.

Then he examined the other papers.

One was a bank statement.

Another was a handwritten list of transactions.

The third was a document signed by Michael.

At the bottom, Emily had written a note.

This is the proof he doesn't know I kept.

Daniel stared at the signature.

It appeared to be an acknowledgment that Michael had transferred company funds into a private account without authorization.

But the final page contained something even more troubling: a record of a payment made to Vanessa shortly after Emily's death.

Daniel looked up.

“You were being paid before you married me.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She began to speak, but a sound from downstairs interrupted her.

A car engine roared to life.

Daniel rushed to the window.

Michael was backing his SUV out of the driveway.

“Michael!””

The vehicle accelerated toward the street.

Daniel reached for his phone and called the police, reporting the suspected financial fraud and the potential destruction of evidence. He gave them the vehicle description and registration number, then returned to the bedroom.

Vanessa had gone pale.

“He's leaving.””

“Yes.””

“He'll never come back.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Is that what you're afraid of?””

She shook her head.

“No. I'm afraid he'll tell them what I did.””

Daniel's phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent him a photograph.

It showed Michael standing outside a storage facility beside a metal cabinet.

In his hand was a document.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

Your brother is on his way to destroy the last piece of evidence. If you want to know why Emily was really afraid of him, get to Warehouse 19 before he does.

Daniel looked at Margaret, who had just returned from the study.

“Can you stay with Lily?””

“Of course.””

He took the silver box and the documents, then headed for the door.

As he reached his car, another message appeared.

This one came from Michael.

Ask Vanessa who paid for your first wife's final hospital treatment. Then ask why she needed you to believe Emily died without leaving you anything.

Daniel stopped.

The air seemed to vanish from his lungs.

Because he remembered that final hospital bill.

May you like

And he remembered the woman who had insisted on paying it.

Vanessa.
