Chapter 9: The Father Who Came Back
For seven years, I imagined this moment.
I imagined my father walking through the front door.
I imagined running into his arms.
I imagined him saying he was sorry.
I imagined everything I had lost suddenly coming back.
But when it finally happened…
I couldn’t move.
The man standing in the doorway looked older.
His hair had more gray.
His face had more lines.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes that watched me ride my bike for the first time.
The same eyes that stayed awake when I had nightmares.
The same eyes that promised me he would always protect me.
“Ethan.””
My name sounded different when he said it.
Like he had been waiting years just to say it again.
I whispered:
“Dad?””
His face broke.
And then I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t care who was watching.
I ran across the room and crashed into him.
His arms wrapped around me.
And for the first time in years…
I felt safe.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Over and over.
“I’m so sorry.””
I grabbed his jacket.
“Why did you leave?””
The question came out before I could stop it.
“Why did you let me think you abandoned me?””
My father closed his eyes.
Because he didn’t have an easy answer.
“I never left because I wanted to.””
I pulled away.
“Then why?””
He looked around the room.
At Amanda.
At Marcus.
At Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Because someone I trusted tried to destroy everything.””
Amanda crossed her arms.
“You’re really going to stand there and pretend you’re innocent?””
My father looked at her.
The sadness disappeared.
“I’m not pretending anything.””
Amanda laughed.
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“You abandoned your son.””
“No.””
His voice became firm.
“I protected him.””
The room went silent.
My father walked toward the table.
He picked up the device.
“You found it.””
I nodded.
“Dad… what is this?””
He looked at it.
“A promise.””
“A promise?””
“When I realized Amanda was taking money, changing records, and trying to isolate you from me, I knew I couldn’t fight her the normal way.””
Daniel nodded.
“She had already convinced people around her that Robert was unstable.””
My father looked at him.
“She was preparing everyone for my disappearance.””
Amanda’s face tightened.
“You have no proof.””
My father smiled sadly.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
He placed the device on the table.
“Everything is here.””
Amanda looked at the device.
Then at Marcus.
“You told him?””
Marcus shook his head.
“He figured it out.””
My father looked at me.
“No. Ethan figured it out.””
I didn’t understand.
“I did?””
He nodded.
“You survived because you paid attention.””
Those words hurt.
Because I didn’t want to be a child who had to survive.
I wanted to just be a kid.
My father noticed.
“I’m sorry you had to become strong so young.””
I looked down.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His expression changed.
The pain on his face was worse than anything I had seen.
“Because every time I tried…”
He stopped.
“Someone stopped me.””
Daniel opened a file.
“We found evidence of false reports.””
“What reports?””
“Reports claiming Robert was dangerous.””
My father nodded.
“Amanda told people I was unstable. She convinced others I needed to disappear.””
I looked at Amanda.
“You lied about him.””
She stared at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice was stronger than before.
“I understand.””
For once, Amanda had nothing to say.
Then Lily stepped forward.
“Dad?””
My father turned.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Lily.””
She ran to him.
He hugged her too.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
She cried into his shoulder.
“I thought you were gone forever.””
“I know.””
“I missed you.””
“I missed you too.””
Watching them broke something inside me.
Because I realized something.
I wasn’t the only one who had been hurt.
We all had.
Except Amanda.
Amanda stepped backward.
“You think this changes anything?””
Everyone looked at her.
She grabbed her purse.
“I still have rights.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, you don’t.””
She stopped.
“What?””
He opened another folder.
“Robert’s legal team prepared everything before his disappearance.””
My father nodded.
“Every account. Every document. Every conversation.””
Amanda’s face went pale.
Daniel continued.
“Your actions have been recorded for months.””
She looked at me.
“You recorded me?””
I said nothing.
Because she already knew.
Then she did something I never expected.
She smiled.
Not a scared smile.
A confident one.
“You still don’t know everything.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What did you do?””
Amanda looked directly at me.
“You think I was the person controlling everything?””
The room became cold.
“What are you talking about?”” Daniel asked.
Amanda laughed.
“Robert always thought he was smarter than everyone.””
She looked at my father.
“But he never found the real person.””
My father stepped forward.
“Who?””
Amanda’s smile widened.
Then she said a name.
A name that made my father freeze.
“No…”
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He stared at Amanda.
“How did you know about him?””
Amanda whispered:
“Because he’s the reason you’re standing here today.””
And then the door opened again.
May you like
Someone else walked inside.
Someone my father thought he had escaped from forever.
