Chapter 8: What Mom Knew

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

Twelve minutes felt like an hour.

The broken glass glittered across the entryway.

Madison sat on the kitchen floor with her knees pulled to her chest.

Karen was silent.

Dad stood beside the window, staring at the street.

I sat at the dining table with my mother's letter spread in front of me.

The first page was only three paragraphs.

But every sentence felt like it had been waiting fourteen years to find me.

*Emily,*

*If you are reading this, I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.*

*I need you to know that your father loves you. He made mistakes, but he is not the person you should fear.*

I stopped.

My eyes filled with tears.

Dad had always told me Mom loved me.

But seeing her handwriting was different.

It made her feel close enough to touch.

I kept reading.

*The money your grandfather left you is not simply an inheritance. It is protection.*

*Robert Hale has been stealing from your grandfather's company. He has used other people's names, including Michael's, to hide what he has done.*

*I found evidence.*

My hands shook.

The officer beside me asked,

“Do you want to continue?””

I nodded.

I read the next paragraph.

*If Robert discovers I have copied the records, he will try to make it look like Michael was responsible. He will use the trust to control Emily's future.*

I looked at Dad.

He was staring at the floor.

“Why didn't you tell me this?””

He whispered, “I didn't know.””

“But she wrote it.””

“I never saw the letter.””

I believed him.

For the first time that night, I believed him.

The next sentence changed everything.

*Karen knows where I hid the evidence.*

I looked toward her.

She was sitting on the couch.

“Where?””

Karen's face crumpled.

“I don't know.””

“You do.””

“I haven't seen it since that night.””

“What evidence?””

She shook her head.

“Your mother gave me a key.””

“To what?””

“Your grandfather's office.””

Dad looked at her.

“You said the office was locked.””

“It was.””

“Then why did you have the key?””

“Your mother gave it to me.””

“Why?””

Karen stared at the floor.

“She thought someone was following her.””

I turned back to the letter.

There was another page.

*The evidence is hidden where Dad taught me to keep important things.*

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Dad looked at the page.

“Your grandfather had a safe.””

“Where?””

“In his old office.””

“Where's the office?””

“Behind the warehouse.””

I looked at Daniel.

He had arrived with another attorney.

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandfather's office still exists.””

“Does anyone have access?””

Dad shook his head.

“I haven't been there in years.””

Karen suddenly stood.

“We can't go there.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Robert knows about it.””

“How?””

“I told him.””

Dad's face hardened.

“You told him everything.””

“I was trying to protect Madison.””

Madison looked up.

“Mom, stop using me.””

Karen froze.

Madison stood.

“You keep saying everything you did was for me.””

Her voice shook.

“But you lied to me.””

“Madison…”

“You told me Emily was selfish.””

Karen started crying.

“You told me the money was Grandpa's gift.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You made me spend stolen money.””

“I didn't know what else to do.””

Madison looked at me.

“I'll give it back.””

I shook my head.

“You don't have it.””

“I'll sell the SUV.””

“You still won't have enough.””

“I'll figure it out.””

I nodded.

“Then help me.””

She wiped her eyes.

“How?””

“Tell me everything Mom told you about Robert.””

Madison looked at Karen.

Karen whispered,

“Don't.””

Madison looked back at me.

“He came to the house once.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

“What did he want?””

“Mom.””

“What did he say?””

“He said the trust had to be transferred before your twenty-fifth birthday.””

“Why?””

“He said once you turned twenty-five, you could challenge everything.””

My heart pounded.

“What did he mean?””

Daniel answered.

“Your grandfather designed the trust so that Emily would gain full control at twenty-five.””

I looked at him.

“And until then?””

“Your father could administer it.””

“But not give it away.””

“Correct.””

I stared at the letter.

Suddenly, the timeline made sense.

Robert had fourteen years to control the trust.

But I was four years away from taking full control.

So he needed access now.

He needed me to appear to surrender my rights.

He needed Dad's signature.

He needed Karen.

And he needed the money.

I looked at Dad.

“Did Robert threaten you?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

“He said if I didn't cooperate, he'd expose the fraudulent transfers.””

“But you didn't make them.””

“Some were made using my signature.””

“So he could make it look like you did.””

Dad nodded.

“Then why didn't you go to the police?””

He looked at Karen.

“Because he threatened Madison.””

Madison shook her head.

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

Dad looked devastated.

“I thought I could protect everyone.””

I stared at him.

“You protected the wrong people.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The attorney beside Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily, there may be a way to freeze the remaining trust assets tonight.””

“How?””

“We file an emergency petition.””

“Do it.””

“We also need evidence.””

I looked at the letter.

“Then let's get it.””

Dad reached for his coat.

“I'll drive.””

Karen stood.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You need me.””

“Why?””

“Because I know where the key is.””

Everyone went silent.

“You still have it?””

Karen nodded.

She reached into her purse.

Then pulled out a small brass key.

My mother's key.

I stared at it.

“Why did you keep it?””

“Because your mother asked me to.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Robert?””

Karen nodded.

“Of him. Of losing Madison. Of losing your father.””

I looked at her.

“And what were you afraid of losing when you stole from me?””

She started crying.

“I don't have an answer that makes me look better.””

At least she was finally telling the truth.

We drove to the warehouse.

The building stood at the edge of an industrial district, dark and abandoned-looking.

Dad unlocked the gate.

Inside, dust covered everything.

The old office was at the back.

Dad stopped outside.

“I haven't opened this door since your mother's funeral.””

Karen put the key into the lock.

Her hand shook.

Click.

The door opened.

The room smelled like old paper and wood.

There were shelves along the walls.

A desk.

A filing cabinet.

And behind the desk, a large framed photograph of my grandfather.

I walked toward it.

Something felt wrong.

I touched the frame.

It moved.

I pulled it away from the wall.

Behind it was a small metal safe.

My heart raced.

“Mom hid it here.””

Dad whispered, “I never knew.””

Karen stepped closer.

“She told me.””

“What did she tell you?””

“That if she didn't survive, you would eventually find this.””

I inserted the key.

It turned.

Inside was a stack of documents.

A flash drive.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph.

My mother was standing outside a restaurant.

Beside her was Robert.

And beside Robert was someone else.

My father.

But the photo wasn't what frightened me.

It was the date.

The picture had been taken three days before my mother's death.

Dad stared at it.

“I don't remember this.””

I turned it over.

There was handwriting on the back.

*Michael doesn't know why he's there.*

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Then I saw another line.

*Robert brought him.*

Dad stepped backward.

“I swear to God, Emily, I didn't know.””

I believed him.

But then I picked up the flash drive.

A label had been written across it.

*TRANSFER RECORDS — FINAL COPY*

Daniel took it.

“Don't open it here.””

“Why?””

“Because if Robert has been watching the trust, he may have access to more than we realize.””

The attorney nodded.

“We should take it somewhere secure.””

I put the photograph into my bag.

Then I saw one final document inside the safe.

A single page.

My grandfather's handwriting.

*If Robert comes for Emily's inheritance, look at the person who first helped him enter the family.*

I stared at the sentence.

“Who brought Robert into our family?””

Dad looked at Karen.

Karen looked at Dad.

Neither spoke.

Then Madison whispered,

“It wasn't Mom.””

We all turned.

Madison pointed at the photograph.

“It was Dad.””

Dad's face went white.

“I don't remember Robert being there.””

Madison shook her head.

“I do.””

“Why?””

She stared at him.

“Because Robert was the man who came to our house the week after Mom died.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Dad.

“You knew him before Karen married you?””

Dad couldn't answer.

May you like

And that was when I realized the final secret wasn't about Karen.

It was about my father.
