Chapter 7: My Brother Confessed to Loosening the Steps

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't breathe.

His brother's voice came through the phone, thin and unsteady.

"I said I loosened the support, Daniel. I didn't say I killed Claire.""

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

"Why were you there?""

Michael exhaled sharply.

"Because Vanessa called me.""

"At two forty-one in the afternoon? On the day my wife died?""

"Yes.""

"And you expect me to believe that was a coincidence?""

"No. I expect you to listen before you decide I'm a murderer.""

Daniel looked at the frozen image on his laptop. Michael stood beside the garden steps, one hand near the railing, his silver watch catching the afternoon sun.

Ruth was crying quietly beside him.

"Tell me what happened," Daniel demanded.

"Not over the phone.""

"Then come here.""

"I can't.""

Daniel's anger flared.

"You can walk into my garden and tamper with my property, but you can't walk into my house and explain yourself?""

"I can explain it. I just can't do it while Vanessa might be listening.""

Daniel glanced toward the office door.

"She's not here.""

"You don't know that.""

The words sent a chill through him.

Michael continued, "Meet me at the old boathouse near the reservoir. Tomorrow morning. Six o'clock. Bring the footage.""

"No. You're coming to the police station.""

"Daniel, please.""

"Why should I trust you?""

"You shouldn't. Not yet.""

A long silence followed.

Then Michael said something that changed the way Daniel understood the recording.

"Claire wasn't the only person Vanessa wanted out of your life.""

The call ended.

Daniel stood motionless.

Ruth slowly wiped her cheeks.

"What did he say?""

Daniel repeated the conversation.

When he mentioned the boathouse, Ruth shook her head.

"No.""

"Mom—"

"Michael hasn't been himself since Claire died. He stopped visiting. He wouldn't look me in the eye at the funeral. And now this?""

"Did you know he and Vanessa were close?""

Ruth looked down.

"I knew they spoke occasionally. I thought it was about family matters.""

Daniel remembered something else.

Six months after Claire's death, Michael had asked him to invest in a small property development project. Daniel had refused because he was struggling to pay the mortgage and cover childcare expenses.

Michael had seemed unusually angry.

He had accused Daniel of allowing grief to cloud his judgment.

Then he had stopped asking.

"Mom," Daniel said slowly, "what if this was never just about Claire?""

Ruth looked toward the window.

"What do you mean?""

"What if Vanessa wanted the house? The money? Everything that came with being married to me?""

Ruth closed her eyes.

"I've wondered the same thing.""

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from Mia.

Ellie is asking for you. She says she needs to tell you something about Michael.

Daniel immediately called her.

"What happened?""

Mia's voice was tense.

"Your brother came to the house yesterday afternoon. Before you changed the locks.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What did he want?""

"He asked Ellie if she remembered the day her mother died.""

Daniel stood so quickly that his chair toppled backward.

"He spoke to my daughter about Claire's death?""

"He said he was trying to help her remember something.""

"What did Ellie tell him?""

Mia hesitated.

"She said she remembered a man standing near the garden steps. She told him she had seen the man's watch.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

"What watch?""

"The silver one. She said it looked like the watch Uncle Michael always wore.""

Ruth covered her mouth.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"What else?""

"Mia said Ellie told Michael that Mommy had been scared of him.""

The room seemed to go silent.

"Did Michael say anything?""

"He told her she was confused. Then he asked her not to tell you about their conversation.""

Daniel ended the call and stood perfectly still.

His brother had not merely appeared in the garden on the day Claire died.

He had returned to the house years later and questioned a six-year-old child about what she remembered.

And he had asked her to keep it secret.

Daniel turned to Ruth.

"I'm going to find out what he did.""

"Daniel, please be careful.""

"I will.""

But when he looked at the laptop again, he noticed something he hadn't seen before.

The video file contained a second camera angle.

He opened it.

This recording showed the narrow path leading from the garden to the side gate.

At 2:38 p.m., Vanessa appeared.

She was carrying the small tool case.

She placed it behind a large planter, looked toward the house, and walked away.

Three minutes later, Michael entered the garden.

He went directly to the planter.

He took out the tool case.

Then he walked toward the steps.

Daniel leaned closer to the screen.

Michael hadn't arrived unexpectedly.

Vanessa had prepared for him.

He paused the footage.

There, near the bottom of the screen, was a small detail that made his blood run cold.

A second figure stood behind the kitchen curtain.

Someone had been watching the entire exchange.

Someone who had never appeared in the original police report.

Daniel zoomed in on the image, but the pixels blurred into a gray shape.

He couldn't identify the person.

Yet the figure's posture was familiar.

A slight tilt of the head.

One hand resting against the curtain.

Daniel had seen that silhouette in his own house hundreds of times.

He replayed the clip.

The figure disappeared just before Michael reached the steps.

Daniel's phone rang again.

This time, it was Vanessa.

He almost rejected the call.

Instead, he answered.

"Where is Ellie?"" she asked.

Daniel felt his anger sharpen.

"She's safe.""

"I want to speak to her.""

"No.""

"Daniel, I'm her stepmother.""

"And you used that position to frighten her.""

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

"Is that what Mia told you?""

"Ellie told me herself.""

Silence.

Then Vanessa's voice changed.

"Children imagine things when they're upset.""

"Did you tell her that her father would send her away?""

"I told her to behave.""

"Did you lock her in the pantry?""

"I disciplined her.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"You're not coming near her again.""

"You don't have the right to decide that.""

"I do when I'm protecting my child.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Then perhaps you should ask Michael what he did to protect his family.""

Daniel looked at the screen.

"What do you know about Michael?""

"I know that he was at your house the day Claire died.""

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa continued, "I know that he was supposed to fix something in the garden, and I know that he didn't tell you the whole story.""

"Did you send him there?""

A pause.

Then Vanessa laughed softly.

"You really think I need to answer that?""

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

She had confirmed nothing.

But she had known exactly what he had discovered.

He turned toward Ruth.

"Vanessa knew about the footage.""

Ruth nodded slowly.

"Which means she may have known about the cameras.""

"And if she knew about the cameras, she may have known about the recordings, too.""

Daniel looked back at the laptop.

The second figure behind the curtain remained unidentified.

He enlarged the image one more time.

A glint appeared near the figure's wrist.

A silver bracelet.

Daniel's heart began to pound.

He had seen that bracelet in a photograph from Claire's funeral.

He had seen it on Ruth's wrist that morning.

But Ruth had been at the pharmacy when Claire fell.

Unless—

Daniel turned to his mother.

"Mom, where were you at 2:38 p.m. on the day Claire died?""

Ruth stared at him.

"I was at the pharmacy.""

"Can you prove that?""

Her face crumpled.

"Daniel, what are you asking me?""

He immediately regretted the question.

"I'm sorry. I don't know what I'm thinking.""

But Ruth had gone very still.

Then she whispered, "I wasn't at the pharmacy when Claire fell.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What?""

"I left the house at two fifteen. I drove to the pharmacy, but I forgot my prescription. I came back.""

"When?""

"Just before three.""

Daniel felt the room tilt.

"You were there?""

Ruth nodded, tears running down her face.

"I heard Claire fall. I ran into the garden.""

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"Because when I got there, Michael was already kneeling beside her. Vanessa was screaming for help. And Michael looked at me and said, 'Mom, if you love Daniel, you'll keep quiet about what you saw.''"

Daniel backed away from the desk.

For two years, he had believed his mother had been absent from the moment that destroyed their family.

Now he realized she had been there.

She had seen something.

And she had been afraid to tell him.

"Mom," he whispered, "what did you see?""

Ruth covered her face.

"I saw Michael holding the broken support in his hands.""

Daniel's breath caught.

"And Vanessa?""

Ruth looked up.

"She was standing behind him. She was holding Claire's phone.""

The room went silent.

Then Ruth said the words Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.

"Your brother didn't loosen that support to kill Claire. He loosened it because Vanessa promised him something.""

"What?""

May you like

Ruth swallowed hard.

"She promised him your house.""
