Chapter 2: The Recording

Marcus stared at Vanessa's hand wrapped around his wrist.

“Let go,” he said.

She didn't.

“Please, Marcus. Just listen to me.””

“Let go of my arm.””

Her fingers loosened.

Ethan watched his father take one step away from her.

It was a small movement, barely enough to separate their shoulders, but something in the room shifted with it.

Vanessa noticed, too.

She straightened her dress as much as she could, pulled a strand of hair behind her ear, and forced a laugh.

“This is absurd,” she said.

“We're letting a teenager manipulate us with a security camera.””

Ethan's cheek still throbbed.

“You were the one who wanted him to believe you.””

“Ethan,” Marcus warned.

“No, Dad. She said I attacked her. You hit me before you even asked what happened.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

For one second, Ethan thought his father might strike him again.

Instead, Marcus looked down at the phone.

“I'm checking the recording,” he said.

“Nobody speaks until I finish.””

Vanessa's lips pressed together.

Marcus tapped the screen.

The footage appeared.

At first, it showed the empty foyer.

The clock above the staircase read 8:41 p.m.

The front doors were closed.

The chandelier cast warm light across the marble floor, and the dark wood table stood exactly where it had been for more than a decade.

Marcus dragged the playback bar backward.

“Let's see,” he murmured.

At 8:43, Vanessa entered the frame.

She was wearing the same hot-pink dress, her blonde hair swept into a smooth twist.

She carried a small leather handbag and a glass of water.

She placed the bag on the table.

Then she looked directly at the camera.

Not casually.

Not as someone who had simply noticed a device.

She stared at it for several seconds.

Marcus frowned.

“Why is she looking at the camera?”” he asked.

Ethan said nothing.

On the screen, Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

She placed it beside the envelope.

Then she checked the front doors.

She checked the staircase.

Finally, she walked out of frame.

Marcus dragged the footage forward.

At 8:51, Ethan appeared.

He came down the stairs wearing gray sweatpants and a navy sweatshirt, his phone in one hand.

He stopped when he saw the money on the table.

He leaned closer, then looked toward the hallway.

The footage showed him speaking, though the audio was too quiet to make out his first words.

A few seconds later, Vanessa returned.

She walked directly toward him.

Marcus turned up the volume.

Vanessa's voice filled the foyer.

“Don't touch that.””

Ethan on the recording stepped away from the table.

“I wasn't touching it.””

“Then why are you standing here?””

“Because my name is on the envelope.””

Vanessa picked up the envelope and held it against her chest.

“You need to listen carefully, Ethan.””

Marcus glanced at his son.

Ethan's face had gone pale.

On the screen, Vanessa stepped closer to him.

“You're leaving this house tonight.””

The sentence echoed through the foyer.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the phone.

“Keep watching,” she said quickly.

“He's leaving out what happened before that.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Then the recording will show it.””

On-screen, Ethan shook his head.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

“You don't get to make that decision.””

“This is my home.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Your home? Your father owns this house, Ethan. And your father is tired of your behavior.””

“Dad hasn't said anything about me leaving.””

“Your father trusts me to handle things when he's busy.””

Ethan looked toward the staircase.

“Then I'll call him.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Don't you dare.””

“Why?””

“Because I am telling you what will happen if you make this difficult.””

She placed the envelope on the table and tapped it with one manicured fingernail.

“You want to know what's inside?””

Ethan nodded.

“Open it,” she said.

He didn't move.

“Go on.””

“No.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Afraid?””

“I'm not touching anything that belongs to you.””

“That's funny,” she said.

“Considering what you've already taken.””

On the phone, Ethan's shoulders stiffened.

“What are you talking about?””

“The money.””

“I didn't take your money.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You've been waiting for an opportunity to get rid of me since the day I married your father.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't care who Dad marries. I care that you keep lying to him.””

Vanessa's face went blank.

Then she spoke so quietly that Marcus had to lean closer to the phone.

“Your father will believe whatever I tell him.””

The real Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

On the recording, Ethan stared at her.

“Why are you doing this?””

“Because you have something that should have been mine.””

“What?””

Vanessa glanced toward the camera.

Then she reached for the money.

She began arranging the bills into a neat stack, separating them into smaller piles.

Marcus paused the video.

“What does she mean?”” he asked.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“She's talking about the trust. Ethan knows I was trying to help him manage his finances.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You told me the money was stolen.””

“Not on the recording,” she snapped.

Marcus looked back at the screen.

“Continue.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

The video resumed.

Ethan had moved away from the table.

Vanessa stood with the envelope in her left hand and the money in front of her.

She looked toward the hallway.

Then she did something that made Marcus lean forward.

She placed the envelope beneath the stack of bills.

She picked up the cash.

She put it down again.

Then she walked to the center of the foyer and turned her back to Ethan.

For several seconds, she stood motionless.

Then she reached for the neckline of her dress.

And tore it.

Marcus froze.

The fabric ripped with a clear, sharp sound.

Vanessa yanked at it again, widening the tear.

She dragged both hands through her carefully arranged hair, pulling pins loose until blonde strands fell across her face.

Then she slapped her own cheek.

Once.

Twice.

Ethan's mouth fell open.

“Dad,” he whispered.

Marcus didn't answer.

On the screen, Vanessa turned toward Ethan.

Her expression changed so quickly it was almost frightening.

Her eyes widened.

Her mouth opened.

She began breathing in ragged gasps.

“Help!”” she screamed.

Ethan recoiled.

“What are you doing?””

“Help me!””

“I didn't touch you!””

She backed toward the staircase, clawing at her own dress.

Then she screamed the words that had brought Marcus running.

“Marcus! Your son attacked me!””

The footage continued.

Ethan raised both hands.

“Stop! I didn't do anything!””

Vanessa looked straight at the front doors.

Marcus's car headlights swept across the windows.

She immediately fell against the table, knocking the vase sideways.

The crash was loud enough to make Ethan flinch.

Then the front door opened.

Marcus entered the frame.

Everything happened exactly as Ethan had described.

Vanessa ran toward him.

She screamed.

Marcus crossed the foyer.

He struck his son.

Ethan stumbled into the table.

And behind Marcus, Vanessa smiled.

The real Marcus lowered his phone.

The silence that followed was so complete that Ethan could hear the faint hum of the security system.

His father stared at the floor.

Then he looked at his wife.

“Tell me I didn't just see that.””

Vanessa took a step toward him.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

“You tore your own dress.””

“I was trying to get away from him.””

“You tore your own dress while he was standing six feet away.””

“He was threatening me!””

“The audio caught everything you said.””

“He provoked me!””

Marcus looked down at the phone again.

“The camera caught you slapping yourself.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“You don't understand what it's like living with him!””

Ethan let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Living with me? You told me to leave my own house!””

Vanessa spun toward him.

“Shut up!””

“Vanessa!”” Marcus shouted.

She stopped.

For the first time, he had used her name the way he used it in business meetings when someone had crossed a line.

Not with affection.

With warning.

Marcus replayed the last thirty seconds.

He watched the slap.

The torn dress.

The staged panic.

His own hand striking his son.

When the recording ended, he lowered the phone.

“Ethan,” he said quietly.

Ethan looked at him.

Marcus swallowed.

“I'm sorry.””

The words should have helped.

They didn't.

Ethan's eyes filled, but he refused to let the tears fall.

“You didn't even ask me.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You just believed her.””

“I know.””

“You hit me.””

Marcus looked at the red mark on Ethan's cheek.

His face crumpled for an instant.

“I know, son.””

Vanessa seized the opening.

“Marcus, you're making a terrible mistake. He has been manipulating you for years, and now he's using a camera to make me look like a criminal.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Stop.””

“You can't throw away our marriage because of one video!””

“One video?”” Marcus repeated.

He lifted the phone.

“It shows you framing my son.””

“I was scared!””

“You weren't scared until my car arrived.””

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the front doors.

Marcus noticed.

“So that's it,” he said.

“You planned this.””

“No.””

“You knew I would believe you.””

“No!””

“You were counting on me to hit him before I asked a single question.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“I was trying to protect myself!””

“From what?””

She hesitated.

Then she pointed at Ethan.

“From him taking everything!””

Marcus stared at her.

“What is that supposed to mean?””

Vanessa's mouth snapped shut.

Ethan remembered her words from the recording.

You have something that should have been mine.

He looked at the envelope.

“Dad, what's in there?””

Marcus turned toward the table.

Vanessa moved first.

She snatched the envelope and clutched it against her chest.

“It's private.””

“Put it down,” Marcus said.

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“You have no idea what he has done!””

“Then show me.””

She shook her head violently.

Marcus held out his hand.

“Give me the envelope.””

For a long moment, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa slowly lowered it.

But instead of placing it in Marcus's palm, she tore open the flap.

A folded document slid halfway out.

Marcus caught the edge before it fell.

He unfolded the first page.

His expression changed as he read the heading.

Ethan stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Marcus didn't answer.

He turned to the second page.

Then the third.

His hand began to tremble.

“Vanessa,” he said, barely above a whisper, “where did you get this?””

She backed away.

“Marcus, listen—”

“Where did you get my son's legal guardianship papers?””

Ethan stared at the document.

He had never seen it before.

At the bottom of the final page was a signature.

It looked like his father's.

But the date beside it was wrong.

Marcus looked at the signature again.

Then he lifted his eyes to Vanessa.

“You told me these were never prepared.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Marcus's voice hardened.

“And you told me you had never met the attorney who drafted them.””

She backed toward the staircase.

“Marcus, please.””

He turned the paper over.

A handwritten note was attached to the back.

He read it once.

Then again.

His face drained of color.

Ethan looked from his father to the woman in pink.

“What does it say?””

Marcus slowly raised the note.

And when he spoke, his voice sounded like that of a man who had just discovered that the person sleeping beside him had been planning his destruction.

“It says,” Marcus whispered, “that if I refuse to sign the next document, you won't just lose your home.””

May you like

He looked at Ethan.

“You could lose everything your mother left you.””
