Chapter 9: The House
The first sound was glass breaking.
Michael grabbed my arm.
“Get down!””
We dropped behind the kitchen counter.
Chloe crawled toward the hallway.
“There's a back door.””
Michael shook his head.
“They'll be watching it.””
Another window shattered.
I heard footsteps.
Then a man's voice.
“Michael!””
Victor.
My son clenched his jaw.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
“Mom.””
“No.””
I had spent twenty years being told to stay out of things.
Not anymore.
Chloe pointed toward the basement.
“There.””
We hurried downstairs.
The basement smelled like dust and damp wood.
Michael found a flashlight.
He switched it on.
The beam swept across shelves of old boxes.
Then stopped.
A wooden door stood at the far end.
“What is that?”” I asked.
Chloe whispered, “Your grandmother's room.””
“My grandmother had a room down here?””
“She did.””
Michael tried the handle.
Locked.
I pulled a key from the envelope Rebecca had given me.
I hadn't noticed it before.
I handed it to him.
He unlocked the door.
Inside was a small office.
A desk.
A filing cabinet.
And dozens of cardboard boxes.
Michael opened the first.
Documents.
Bank records.
Tax statements.
Photographs.
Everything my mother had hidden.
He opened another.
“Mom.””
I turned.
He held a ledger.
Black cover.
Gold lettering.
I recognized the handwriting on the first page.
My father's.
Michael opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Transfers.
Companies.
Then one name appeared repeatedly.
Victor Hale.
Michael's hands shook.
“We found it.””
A noise came from upstairs.
Chloe froze.
“He's here.””
Michael closed the ledger.
“We need to go.””
I looked at the desk.
Something was taped underneath it.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
I pulled it free.
Inside was a note from my mother.
Emma, if you ever find this, the truth is no longer safe.
I kept reading.
Daniel tried to protect you.
I tried to protect you.
Rebecca tried to protect you.
But none of us understood one thing.
I looked at Michael.
“What?””
He read over my shoulder.
The final line said:
The person closest to you is the one who opened the door.
I felt a chill.
Linda.
I suddenly understood.
Linda had hired me when Daniel left.
She had given me extra shifts.
She had helped me pay Michael's school fees.
She had watched him grow.
She had been there for every crisis.
I couldn't believe it.
Michael whispered, “Mom.””
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
Then a woman's voice.
“Emma?””
My blood ran cold.
Linda.
Chloe covered her mouth.
Michael looked at me.
“Don't answer.””
Linda called again.
“Emma, I know you're down there.””
The basement door opened.
Footsteps descended.
Linda appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
She looked exactly as she had every morning at the diner.
Simple blouse.
Gray hair.
Gentle expression.
But her eyes were different.
Cold.
She smiled.
“You finally found it.””
I stepped forward.
“Why?””
Linda sighed.
“Because your father asked me to watch you.””
Michael's voice sharpened.
“Watch her?””
“Protect her.””
“You betrayed her.””
“I kept her alive.””
I held up the ledger.
“You helped him.””
Linda shook her head.
“I helped myself.””
Chloe stared at her.
“You gave Victor the address.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he promised to leave my family alone.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You destroyed my mother's life.””
Linda's expression hardened.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Your father did that.””
“Then why did you help him?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was afraid.””
Linda's eyes filled.
“You think fear excuses everything?””
“No.””
She nodded.
“Neither do I.””
Then she reached into her coat.
Michael immediately stepped in front of me.
Linda stopped.
“I don't have a weapon.””
“What do you have?””
“A letter.””
She held it up.
“From Daniel.””
I stared at it.
“Why?””
“Because he asked me to give it to you if he ever failed.””
Michael took it.
He opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at me.
“Mom.””
“What?””
“This is from the night Dad left.””
I took the letter.
The first line made my knees weak.
Emma, if you ever learn the truth, don't blame yourself.
I read the rest.
Daniel explained everything.
The debt.
The threats.
Victor.
My father's company.
The forged documents.
The apartment.
The trust.
Then came the part that destroyed me.
I didn't leave because I wanted another woman.
I left because Victor told me he would kill Emma if I stayed.
I covered my mouth.
Michael put his hand on my shoulder.
Daniel had known.
He had been afraid.
But he had still left.
I kept reading.
There is one thing I never told you.
Michael wasn't supposed to be your only child.
I stopped.
“What?””
Michael stared at me.
I couldn't breathe.
The letter continued.
Before Michael was born, Emma was pregnant again.
I dropped the page.
Memories flooded back.
The hospital.
The blood.
The doctor saying there had been complications.
I had always believed I had miscarried.
Daniel had held my hand.
He had cried.
Then he had told me we were lucky to have Michael.
But the letter said something else.
The baby survived.
My entire body went cold.
Michael whispered:
“Mom?””
I looked at him.
“The baby survived.””
Linda began crying.
Chloe looked horrified.
I turned to her.
“Where is my child?””
No one answered.
Then Linda whispered:
“Your father took the baby.””
The room spun.
Michael grabbed my shoulders.
“Mom!””
I looked at Linda.
“You're lying.””
“No.””
“You're lying!””
“I saw the records.””
“Where is my child?””
Linda's tears fell.
“Your father gave the baby to another family.””
Michael looked at Chloe.
“Do you know?””
Chloe was trembling.
“Yes.””
My heart broke.
“You knew?””
“I found out last year.””
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“That morning.””
I shook my head.
“You humiliated me.””
“I needed you to stay.””
“You took my seat!””
“I needed everyone to believe you were leaving!””
Michael stared at her.
“Why didn't you just tell her?””
“Because Victor was watching!””
She began sobbing.
“I was trying to protect her.””
I looked at Chloe.
“Where is my child?””
She opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Linda spoke.
“The child is alive.””
I stopped breathing.
“Where?””
Linda looked at Michael.
Then at me.
“He's closer than you think.””
Michael's face went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Linda whispered:
“You already know him.””
The basement door slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A man stood at the top of the stairs.
Victor.
He looked down at us.
And beside him stood a young man wearing a university graduation robe.
My heart stopped.
He stepped into the light.
I knew that face.
I had seen it every day.
At the university.
On the stage.
Standing beside Michael.
The same dark eyes.
The same crooked smile.
Victor smiled.
“Meet your other son.””
Michael stared at the young man.
Then at me.
May you like
And the young man whispered:
“Mom?””
