Chapter 7: The Woman in the Hospital Corridor

The following morning, I woke to the sound of someone knocking on my front door.

It was 6:17 a.m.

I wrapped a cardigan around my shoulders and looked through the glass panel.

A woman stood on the porch holding a paper bag.

When I opened the door, I recognized her immediately.

Jessica.

Her makeup was smudged. Her hair hung loosely around her face, and the expensive coat she wore at the wedding was gone. She looked exhausted, but there was something calculated in the way she held herself.

"Margaret," she said.

"Please. I need to talk to you.""

I didn't step aside.

"You've said enough.""

She looked past me into the house.

"Is Daniel here?""

"No.""

"Where is he?""

"I don't know, and even if I did, I wouldn't tell you.""

Her mouth tightened.

"I made a mistake.""

I stared at her.

"You cut your wedding dress, accused me of attacking you, helped prepare a document with my forged signature, and tried to arrange the sale of our property. Which mistake are you referring to?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't understand how far Richard would go.""

"You're asking me to believe you were an innocent bystander?""

"No. I'm asking you to listen.""

She placed the paper bag on the porch.

Inside was a small velvet box.

My mother's pearl earrings.

The ones I had given her when Daniel proposed.

"I shouldn't have accepted these," she whispered.

I felt no satisfaction at seeing them returned.

Only a terrible weariness.

"Why did you come here, Jessica?""

She looked down at the box.

"Because Richard has disappeared.""

The words stopped me.

"What do you mean?""

"He hasn't answered his phone. His office is closed. Someone removed files from his house last night.""

"Did you contact the police?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than her tears.

"You knew about the documents," I said.

"You knew about the planned transfer. You knew what you were doing.""

"I knew about the property.""

"Did you know about the forged signature?""

She looked away.

"Yes.""

"Did you know about Dr. Reed?""

At the doctor's name, her face changed.

For the first time since I had met her, Jessica looked genuinely frightened.

"Where did you hear that name?""

"Answer me.""

She backed toward the steps.

"I can't talk about him here.""

"Then where?""

She glanced at the neighboring houses.

"Somewhere private.""

I shook my head.

"No. If you have information, you can give it to my lawyer.""

"Margaret, please. You don't understand. Richard has something that belongs to your family, and if he gives it to Jonathan, everything will be over.""

"What belongs to my family?""

Jessica's lips parted.

Before she could answer, a black SUV turned onto the street.

She saw it and went pale.

"Get inside," she whispered.

I didn't move.

"Who is that?""

Jessica grabbed my arm.

"Please, Margaret. Don't let them see me.""

I pulled away.

"Do not touch me.""

The SUV slowed in front of the house.

Its windows were tinted.

For several seconds, it remained there.

Then the driver raised a phone, pointed it toward the porch, and took a photograph.

Jessica covered her face.

The SUV drove away.

I looked at her.

"Who was that?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying again.""

"I swear I don't know who it was.""

I opened the front door wider and called Evelyn.

She arrived twenty-five minutes later.

By then, Jessica was sitting on the porch steps, clutching the velvet box.

Evelyn did not invite her inside.

Instead, she asked Jessica to explain why she had come.

Jessica told us that she had met Richard through a business acquaintance two years earlier. At first, he had presented himself as someone who could help her build an independent financial future.

She had been working in luxury event planning and had debts from a failed business venture. Richard offered to introduce her to investors.

One of those investors, she claimed, was Jonathan Vale.

"Jonathan and I were engaged years ago," Jessica said.

"He was charming at first. Then he started controlling everything I did. He wanted to know where I went, who I spoke to, how much money I spent.""

"Did he threaten you?"" Evelyn asked.

"Yes.""

"Do you have evidence?""

Jessica shook her head.

"I never reported it.""

"Why not?""

"Because he told me no one would believe me.""

I watched her closely.

It was possible she was telling the truth about Jonathan.

It was also possible she was building another story designed to make herself look like a victim.

Evelyn seemed to share my doubts.

"Continue," she said.

Jessica explained that Richard had told her the waterfront property was tied up in a complicated trust and that Daniel would eventually need help managing it.

"He said Margaret was controlling the company and that Daniel would never be able to make his own decisions while she was alive.""

My hands curled into fists.

"And you believed him?""

"At first.""

"Then why did you cut your wedding dress?""

Jessica began crying.

"Richard told me the accusation would create a public record of conflict between you and Daniel. He said if you tried to challenge the transfer later, people would see you as a vindictive mother who couldn't accept her son's marriage.""

I stared at her.

"You deliberately destroyed my relationship with my son.""

"I thought Daniel would still marry me. I thought we could fix things afterward.""

"You thought you could humiliate me in front of two hundred people and expect me to forgive you?""

She pressed her hands against her face.

"I know what I did.""

"No," I said.

"You know what you're admitting now that the plan has failed.""

She lowered her hands.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Evelyn asked, "What does Dr. Reed have to do with this?""

Jessica stared at the street.

"Richard said Robert's death created an opportunity. He said the family would be vulnerable, and that if Daniel believed Margaret was incapable of making decisions, he could obtain control of the trust.""

"Did Richard say Robert was murdered?"" Evelyn asked.

Jessica shook her head quickly.

"No. He never said that. He said Robert's death was unfortunate, but it had changed the company's future.""

"Did you meet Dr. Reed?""

Jessica hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"Once.""

"Before or after Robert died?""

"Before.""

My chest tightened.

"Why?""

"Richard arranged the meeting. He said Dr. Reed had information about Robert's health that might affect the company.""

"Did the doctor give him confidential medical information?""

"I don't know. I waited outside the office. Richard came out with an envelope.""

"What was inside it?""

"I never saw.""

Evelyn wrote everything down.

"Do you have any messages confirming this meeting?""

Jessica nodded.

"They're on the phone I left at the apartment.""

Daniel had found the second phone the previous evening, but Jessica claimed she had another device.

"Where is it now?"" Evelyn asked.

"With Jonathan.""

I felt a chill.

"Why would Jonathan have your phone?""

Jessica looked up.

"Because he knows what Richard is planning.""

She explained that Jonathan had contacted her several months earlier. He had claimed he wanted to reconcile, but she refused.

After that, he began sending her information about the property and the trust.

At first, she thought he was trying to frighten her.

Then he showed her documents proving that Richard was preparing a transfer.

"He said he could help me get away from Richard," she whispered.

"But he wanted something in return.""

"What?""

"Control of the waterfront property.""

The room went silent.

Jessica looked at me.

"I thought I could use Richard to get what I wanted, and then use Jonathan to get away from Richard. I thought I could keep Daniel out of it.""

"You married him," I said.

"I loved him.""

"Did you?""

She flinched.

"I did.""

I wanted to believe there was a human being beneath the lies, someone who had once genuinely loved my son.

But love did not explain the cruelty of the wedding accusation.

Love did not justify a forged signature.

And love did not make her innocent.

Evelyn closed her notebook.

"Jessica, you need to understand that this conversation does not protect you from legal consequences. If you participated in an attempt to defraud the trust, you need independent legal counsel. You should not destroy records, contact witnesses to coordinate stories, or make further financial arrangements with anyone involved.""

Jessica nodded.

Then she reached into her coat pocket and removed a folded photograph.

"This is why I came.""

She placed it on the table.

It showed the hospital corridor outside the room where Robert had been treated on the night he died.

A younger Jessica stood near the elevators, wearing a dark coat.

Beside her stood Richard Hale.

And in the background, partially obscured by a doorway, was Jonathan Vale.

I stared at the image.

"When was this taken?""

"The night Robert died," Jessica whispered.

Daniel, who had arrived moments earlier, stood frozen in the doorway.

He had heard the last sentence.

He approached the table and picked up the photograph.

"Why were you at the hospital?""

Jessica began shaking.

"Richard told me to meet him there.""

"Why?""

"He said there was a problem with the medical records.""

Daniel looked at the image again.

"You told me you had never met Dr. Reed.""

"I was afraid you'd ask questions.""

"Did you see my father that night?""

Jessica closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

Daniel's face became expressionless.

"Was he alive when you arrived?""

She opened her mouth, but no words came.

Then her phone rang.

The sound made everyone jump.

Jessica stared at the screen.

The caller's name appeared.

*JONATHAN VALE.*

She answered with trembling fingers.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through the speaker, cold and controlled.

"Jessica, I know you're with the Ellises.""

She looked at Daniel, then at me.

Jonathan continued.

"Tell them the truth about what happened in that hospital corridor, or I'll tell them myself.""

Jessica's face drained of color.

Then he added the words that made Daniel grip the edge of the table.

"Because your mother wasn't the only person who saw Robert that night.""

Jessica whispered, "My mother wasn't there.""

Jonathan laughed softly.

"No, sweetheart. I wasn't talking about your mother.""

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time, Jessica looked at Daniel with something more frightening than guilt.

She looked at him as though she knew exactly who had been standing outside his father's hospital room—and what that person had done.
