Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

Julian pulled into the driveway but didn't turn off the engine.

He stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Elena noticed his expression.

“What is it?””

He handed her the phone.

She studied the photograph, then read the message beneath it.

Her face hardened.

“Who sent this?””

“I don't know.””

“Call them.””

Julian dialed immediately.

The call went straight to voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Aria watched them from the back seat, her hands folded in her lap.

“Daddy, is Aunt Clara angry?””

Julian turned around.

“No, sweetheart. We're dealing with something between the adults.””

“Is she going to cut my hair again?””

The question nearly broke him.

“No,” he said firmly.

“She will never get the chance.””

He carried Aria inside while Elena called their pediatrician to ask whether they should document the incident and arrange support for their daughter. The doctor recommended a gentle examination, photographs of the haircut, and a child counselor if Aria continued struggling with sleep or anxiety.

Julian agreed to everything.

He would never again dismiss a warning sign simply because acknowledging it might make family gatherings uncomfortable.

After Aria had changed into her favorite pajamas, Elena sat with her at the kitchen table.

“Can I ask you something, sweetheart?””

Aria nodded.

“Did Aunt Clara hurt you before she cut your hair?””

Aria stared at a small crack in the wooden tabletop.

“She said it wouldn't hurt.””

“What wouldn't hurt?””

“The scissors.””

Elena reached across the table, stopping before touching her daughter's hand.

“You can tell me anything. You won't be in trouble.””

Aria swallowed.

“Aunt Clara told me to sit in the chair. She said she was going to fix my ribbon because it was crooked.””

“And then?””

“She took out the scissors. I got scared, so I stood up.””

Elena's voice remained steady.

“What happened when you stood up?””

“She grabbed my shoulder and pushed me back down.””

Elena closed her eyes briefly.

Aria continued.

“She said I was embarrassing everyone because I always wanted attention. I told her I didn't want my hair cut. Then she started.””

“Did she hurt you anywhere else?””

Aria shook her head.

“No. But she wouldn't let me leave.””

Elena gently squeezed her hand.

“Thank you for telling me.””

At the kitchen doorway, Julian stood motionless. He had heard enough to understand that this wasn't a thoughtless mistake or an impulsive outburst.

Clara had deceived his daughter, frightened her, and ignored her pleas.

And Julian had trusted her.

That evening, he sat beside Aria while she watched a cartoon. Her favorite stuffed rabbit rested against her stomach.

“Daddy?””

“I'm here.””

“Are you mad at me?””

He turned toward her so quickly that she blinked.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

“Because Aunt Clara said everyone has to be nice to me because you pay for everything.””

Julian felt the words settle like stones inside him.

“Aria, listen to me. Nothing that happened today was your fault. Not one little bit.””

“But Chloe and Maya were upset because you bought me piano lessons.””

“Your cousins' feelings aren't your responsibility. And neither is their mother's behavior.””

Aria looked down at the rabbit.

“Can I still go to Chloe's birthday party next month?””

Julian hesitated.

He wanted to say no. He wanted to erase every opportunity Clara might have to reach his daughter again.

But Aria deserved honesty, not another adult deciding her world without explanation.

“We'll decide together when the time comes,” he said.

“For now, you don't have to see Aunt Clara.””

“Okay.””

She leaned against him.

A few minutes later, she fell asleep.

Julian remained beside her until Elena came to the doorway.

“She finally stopped trembling,” Elena whispered.

He looked at the uneven hair brushing their daughter's cheeks.

“I should have listened to you.””

Elena sat beside him.

“Yes. You should have.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I kept thinking that if I helped Clara enough, she'd eventually stop feeling resentful.””

“Money can't make someone appreciate what they believe they're owed.””

“I know that now.””

Elena rested her head against his shoulder.

“We don't need to solve the rest tonight. We need to protect Aria and let her understand that home is safe.””

Julian nodded.

Then his phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from his cousin Rebecca.

*Julian, please tell me you haven't seen the video going around.*

His stomach tightened.

He opened the family group chat.

At the top sat a video thumbnail showing Clara holding the scissors. Someone had posted the recording from the tablet.

Underneath it were dozens of messages.

Some relatives were horrified.

Others demanded to know why Clara would do such a thing.

Then Julian saw Clara's own message.

*This is what happens when parents raise spoiled children who think the world revolves around them. I was correcting a problem before it became worse.*

Rebecca responded immediately.

*You cut a nine-year-old child's hair while she begged you to stop. What exactly are you defending?*

Clara replied:

*You weren't there. You don't know the full story.*

Then another relative posted a screenshot.

It showed a private message Clara had sent earlier that afternoon.

*Once people see how ridiculous Aria looks, maybe they'll stop acting like she's the only talented child in the family.*

Julian's hands tightened around the phone.

The video hadn't simply leaked.

Someone had deliberately circulated it, along with Clara's own words.

He scrolled upward, searching for the original sender.

The account belonged to Chloe.

Julian stared at the name.

His niece had uploaded the video herself.

Before he could process that discovery, a new message appeared from an unfamiliar number.

*I'm Chloe. I used another phone because Mum checks my tablet. I sent the video to the family chat before she could delete it. Please don't tell her I contacted you.*

Julian read it twice.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*Uncle Julian, there's something else you need to know. Mum didn't start hating Aria today. She's been planning this for weeks.*
