Chapter 4: The Documents She Never Wanted Me to Find

For nearly a minute, I stood outside my daughter's bedroom, staring at the email on my phone.

The hallway was quiet except for the soft sound of Rachel reading Lily a story behind the half-closed door. Downstairs, Vanessa was moving around the kitchen, opening and closing cabinets with unnecessary force.

My wife was behaving as though she had been wronged.

Meanwhile, my seven-year-old daughter was afraid to ask for a new pair of shoes.

I enlarged the attachment.

The transfer to Emily's former attorney had been made five months earlier. The amount was $25,000, paid from the household account I funded every month. The description referred to estate documentation and guardianship consultation.

There was another entry beneath it.

A payment of $12,000 to a private legal services company.

Then another.

$8,500.

The recipient was a business called Hale Family Consulting.

Hale was Vanessa's maiden name.

I immediately called Michael.

He answered before the first ring had finished.

"Daniel, I've been going through the statements. There's considerably more than I expected.""

"How much?""

"At least eighty-six thousand dollars in payments and withdrawals that I can't match to ordinary household expenses. That's just what I've identified so far.""

I gripped the phone.

"Eighty-six thousand?""

"Yes. Some payments went to retailers. Others went to a company registered under Vanessa's maiden name. There are also transfers to an attorney's client account.""

"Which attorney?""

"Martin Reeves. He handled Emily's estate.""

I closed my eyes.

Martin had been a trusted friend of Emily's family. He had helped me settle her affairs after her death, explaining every document patiently while I struggled to concentrate on anything beyond getting through the day.

I had trusted him.

"Michael, I need copies of every transaction, including the original transfer references. Don't contact Vanessa. Don't contact the attorney. Just send me the records.""

"Understood. Daniel, one more thing.""

"What?""

"Several payments were made within forty-eight hours of transfers you specifically labeled for Lily's care.""

I looked through the bedroom doorway.

My daughter was sitting against the pillows, listening to Rachel read.

"Send me everything," I said.

I ended the call.

Then I went downstairs.

Vanessa stood at the kitchen island, pouring herself a glass of sparkling water. She had changed out of her jacket and was wearing a cream-colored sweater that still had its price tag tucked inside the side seam.

She noticed me looking at it and quickly pulled the tag free.

"What now?"" she asked.

I placed my phone on the counter.

"Why did you pay Martin Reeves?""

Her hand stopped halfway to her mouth.

"Who?""

"Emily's former attorney.""

She set the glass down.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Twenty-five thousand dollars. Five months ago. Another twelve thousand went to a legal services company, and there's a business registered under your maiden name.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You went through my financial information?""

"The account I fund paid those bills.""

"Our money is our money, Daniel.""

"Then you shouldn't have a problem explaining where it went.""

She laughed, but the sound was thin and brittle.

"Martin helped me with some paperwork. That's all.""

"What paperwork?""

"Personal matters.""

"Related to Lily?""

Her eyes flickered toward the stairs.

I noticed.

"Vanessa.""

"Don't use that tone with me.""

"What paperwork?""

She walked to the refrigerator, took out a bottle of water, and poured herself another glass.

"I was making sure the family was protected.""

"Protected from what?""

"From uncertainty. From what might happen if something happened to you.""

I stared at her.

"If something happened to me?""

"You're always traveling. You drive in bad weather. You fly every week. Someone has to think about the future.""

"That's what life insurance is for. That's what estate planning is for. You don't secretly move money around and pay an attorney without telling your husband.""

She slammed the bottle onto the counter.

"You weren't exactly available to discuss it!""

"I was available when you wanted a new car. I was available when you wanted the kitchen remodeled. I was available every month when you told me how much Lily's care cost.""

Her face flushed.

"Don't pretend you're some devoted father just because you've suddenly decided to pay attention.""

The accusation struck where she intended.

I had missed Lily's last school recital because a client meeting ran late. I had arrived home after she had fallen asleep on her seventh birthday because my flight was delayed. There were photographs on my phone of events I should have attended and promises I had made to do better.

Vanessa knew my guilt.

She had used it to keep me quiet before.

Not anymore.

"I have made mistakes," I said.

"I've worked too much. I've trusted the wrong person. But none of that gives you the right to lie to my daughter or take money meant for her.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"You're making everything sound criminal.""

"I'm asking questions.""

"And I have answered them.""

"No. You've avoided them.""

I took the little brass key from my pocket and placed it on the counter.

Vanessa stared at it.

The color drained from her face.

"Where did you get that?""

"Lily found it in your coat.""

She snatched the key from the counter.

"She had no right to go through my things!""

"She's seven. She was looking for a library book.""

"You should teach her to respect privacy.""

"And you should stop frightening her.""

Vanessa curled her fingers around the key.

"Give me a little time, Daniel. That's all I'm asking.""

"Time for what?""

"To explain everything properly.""

"You've had months.""

She swallowed.

"I need to speak to Martin first.""

"Why?""

"Because you're misunderstanding the situation.""

"Then explain it now.""

She looked at the stairs again.

I stepped closer.

"What did you take from Emily's estate?""

"Nothing!""

"Where is the silver box?""

"I don't know!""

"Where is the engagement ring?""

"I sold it because I needed money!""

"Then why did you pay Emily's attorney?""

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell me the truth.

Instead, she picked up her phone.

"I'm calling Martin.""

"Put the phone down.""

"No.""

"If you call him, tell him I want a complete copy of every document he prepared concerning Lily.""

She stared at me.

"You can't do this.""

"I can ask for documents involving my own child. And I'm going to.""

Vanessa tapped the screen.

The call connected.

"Martin," she said quickly, turning away from me.

"It's Vanessa. Daniel has seen the transactions.""

Silence.

Then her face changed.

"No, he doesn't know everything. He only saw the payments.""

She pressed her free hand against her forehead.

"I know what we discussed. But he's asking questions, and I need to know whether the documents are still—"

She stopped.

Slowly, she turned toward me.

I was standing directly behind her.

She ended the call.

"What documents?"" I asked.

"Nothing.""

"Vanessa, you just said he didn't know everything.""

"You're twisting my words.""

"Then tell me what they mean.""

She shook her head and backed away.

"You don't understand what Emily left behind.""

My heart began pounding.

"What did Emily leave behind?""

Vanessa looked as though she had suddenly realized she had said too much.

"Nothing. Forget it.""

I reached for my phone.

"I'm calling Martin myself.""

She lunged toward me.

"Don't!""

I stepped back.

Her hand stopped inches from my arm.

We stared at each other.

Then she lowered her voice.

"If you contact him before I explain, you could destroy everything.""

"What is everything?""

She looked toward the staircase.

For the first time, I understood that her fear wasn't simply about losing her marriage or being exposed for stealing money.

She was afraid of something specific.

Something involving my daughter.

Before I could question her again, a small voice came from the stairs.

"Daddy?""

Lily stood on the landing in her pink pajamas, holding the railing with both hands.

Rachel was right behind her.

"What is it, sweetheart?"" I asked, immediately moving toward her.

Lily glanced at Vanessa.

"She said Mommy's box has the papers inside.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Lily continued, her voice trembling.

"She told someone on the phone that if the papers disappeared, she would make sure I never got what Mommy left me.""

I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"What did Emily leave Lily?""

My wife said nothing.

Then the front doorbell rang.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

She looked at the door, then at the key clenched in her hand.

And when she whispered the name of the person standing outside, I realized this nightmare had just become much bigger than a missing ring.

"Martin.""
