Chapter 7: The Woman From the Past

The woman’s name was Evelyn Carter.

I learned that before I learned anything else.

Because she introduced herself like someone who had spent years preparing for this moment.

“I’m Evelyn.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“I was there when you were born.””

My mother looked horrified.

“Get out.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“I was your father’s sister.””

My heart stopped.

“My father’s?””

She nodded.

“The man Margaret told you abandoned you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Another person.

Another piece of a life I never knew existed.

My mother stepped forward.

“You have no right.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“No right?””

She smiled sadly.

“You said that thirty years ago too.””

The tension was unbearable.

I looked at Grandpa.

“Did you know she was coming?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

I believed him.

Evelyn approached me slowly.

“I brought something.””

She handed me a small box.

Inside was a watch.

Old.

Silver.

Worn.

“This belonged to your father.””

I touched it.

My fingers shook.

“He wanted you to have it.””

I looked up.

“You knew him?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He loved you.””

Those three words destroyed me.

Because they were the words I had spent my entire life wanting.

Not money.

Not gifts.

Not apologies.

Just proof.

That someone had wanted me.

“He tried to see you,” Evelyn said.

My mother closed her eyes.

“Stop.””

Evelyn turned.

“He came to your house.””

Silence.

“He stood outside for hours.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He brought gifts.””

My mother’s voice became desperate.

“He was dangerous.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He was heartbroken.””

I looked at my mother.

“Why?””

She finally broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

“Because I was afraid.””

The entire church went quiet.

“Afraid of what?””

Her eyes met mine.

“I was afraid you would choose him.””

The answer was so simple.

So cruel.

I almost didn’t understand it.

“You punished me because you were afraid I would love someone else?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought I was protecting myself.””

I stared.

“You made me pay for your fear.””

She looked away.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“There’s more.””

Of course there was.

There was always more.

She opened a newspaper.

An old article.

My father’s name was printed.

A business scandal.

Fraud allegations.

But underneath it was something else.

A correction notice.

Years later.

The allegations had been withdrawn.

I looked at Michael.

“You were right.””

He nodded.

“My father was innocent.””

My own father spoke.

“You don’t understand business.””

I turned.

“No.””

I held up the article.

“I understand betrayal.””

The church fell silent.

My father’s face hardened.

“You think you’re better than us now?””

The question shocked me.

Not because he said it.

Because he believed it.

I looked at him.

“I think I finally know I was never less.””

That was the first time I saw him lose.

Not financially.

Not socially.

Emotionally.

Because he had built his entire identity around making me feel small.

And it wasn’t working anymore.

My mother suddenly looked at Michael.

“You brought all of them here.””

Michael frowned.

“What?””

She pointed toward the church doors.

A camera crew stood outside.

My blood ran cold.

“What is happening?””

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

“I called them.””

Everyone turned.

“You did what?””

She looked at me.

“Because your parents spent thirty years controlling the story.””

She looked around the church.

“Today, the truth gets a witness.””

My father’s face turned furious.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.””

She smiled.

“I know exactly what I’ve done.””

Then my phone rang.

Again.

Same unknown number.

This time, I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through.

My sister Paige.

“Emma…”

I frowned.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“Please listen to me before Mom finds out.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Finds out what?””

A pause.

Then Paige whispered:

May you like

“I was the one who took your money.””

The church disappeared around me.
