Chapter 4: The Conversation I Didn't Remember

My own voice filled the living room.

“Mark, I can't believe you're asking me to give Megan custody of Lily.””

The recording crackled, followed by the sound of something being placed on a table.

Then Mark's voice answered.

“I'm not asking you to give her custody permanently, Chloe. I'm asking you to consider what's best for Lily.””

I gripped the back of the sofa.

“No,” I whispered.

“I remember that conversation.””

Zoe paused the recording.

“You do?””

I nodded slowly.

It had happened in our kitchen in August, during one of the worst weeks of my life. I had been working late shifts at the hospital's administrative office, struggling with a staffing crisis and barely sleeping. Lily had been unusually quiet, and Mark had insisted that she needed more discipline.

He had suggested that Megan help with childcare.

I remembered refusing.

I remembered telling him that Megan had never been patient with Lily.

But I didn't remember anything about custody.

“Play it,” I told Zoe.

She pressed the screen.

My recorded voice sounded exhausted.

“Mark, I work hard, but that doesn't mean I'm incapable of raising my daughter. Why are you acting like I am?””

“Because you're never home anymore,” Mark replied.

“I leave at seven in the morning and come back at five. That's a normal workday.””

“And when you're late?””

“I call you. I arrange everything. Lily is cared for.””

“By people who aren't family.””

“Your sister isn't automatically a better caregiver just because she's your sister.””

There was a long silence.

Then Mark spoke again.

“Megan thinks Lily would benefit from spending more time with her. She has more flexibility. She has a bigger house. She can give Lily opportunities we can't.””

My recorded voice became sharper.

“What opportunities?””

“Private school. Dance lessons. A better environment.””

“A better environment than her own home?””

“Don't twist my words.””

“I am your wife, Mark. If you think our daughter needs something, we discuss it together. You don't hand her over to your sister because she has a larger bank account.””

The recording continued with several seconds of silence.

Then came a sound I remembered all too well: Mark's wedding ring tapping against the kitchen counter.

When he spoke again, his voice was quieter.

“What if I told you this was about more than money?””

I leaned forward.

“What does that mean?””

“You know Lily has been having problems lately.””

“She is eight. She has been anxious because you keep telling her she's disappointing you.””

“That's not what I said.””

“Then what are you saying?””

The recording crackled.

Mark's answer was almost inaudible.

“I'm saying that Megan could make things easier for all of us if we let her take over some of the responsibility.””

I shook my head.

“I never heard that last part.””

Zoe looked at me carefully.

“Maybe you were too tired to remember everything.””

“No. I remember refusing. I remember going upstairs afterward.””

Mark stood near the fireplace, his hands pressed against his hips.

“This is ridiculous. The recording proves nothing.””

I turned toward him.

“It proves you wanted me to hand over our daughter.””

“I wanted you to consider an arrangement.””

“Why?””

He rubbed the back of his neck.

“Because Megan offered to help.””

“Then why did you tell her not to leave marks where I could see them?””

His silence answered before he did.

“I was angry,” he finally said.

“I shouldn't have said that.””

“You shouldn't have known to say it.””

Zoe folded her arms.

“Mark, what happened to Lily on August 12?””

He looked at her.

“Nothing happened.””

“Then why is there a recording of Chloe refusing to give Megan custody three days before the recording of Lily crying?””

Mark took a step toward the tablet.

“Give me that.””

Zoe immediately pulled it against her chest.

“No.””

“It's a family device.””

“It belongs to Lily.””

“And I'm her father.””

I moved between them.

“Stop using that sentence as if it excuses everything you've done.””

His face tightened.

For the first time, I saw anger break through his carefully controlled expression.

“You have no idea what I've been dealing with,” he snapped.

“You think raising a child is just making dinner, signing school forms, and buying birthday presents? You have no idea how much pressure I've been under.””

“Then tell me.””

He stared at me.

I waited.

Tell me about the pressure. Tell me why you thought our daughter needed another mother. Tell me why you let your sister hurt her.

Instead, he said, “Megan was right about one thing. Lily needs stability.””

I felt as though someone had slapped me.

“Get out.””

He blinked.

“What?””

“Go somewhere else tonight. I don't want you near Lily until you can explain what those recordings mean.””

“This is my house.””

“And she's my daughter.””

“Our daughter,” he corrected.

“Then act like it.””

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Mark grabbed his keys from the hall table.

“You'll regret making this into a war,” he said.

I watched him leave.

The front door slammed hard enough to rattle the framed family photograph hanging beside it.

Zoe let out a shaky breath.

“Chloe, I'm sorry.””

I sank onto the sofa.

“Don't apologize. You didn't do this.””

She sat beside me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

“We need to find out what's on the rest of these files.””

I nodded, though my thoughts were racing.

The recordings suggested that something had happened on August 12. Three days later, Mark had asked me to consider giving Megan custody. The following day, he had warned Megan not to leave visible marks on Lily.

What had happened during those three days?

And why had Mark been so determined to make me believe I was an inadequate mother?

Zoe began scrolling through the files.

“There are six recordings,” she said.

“The first three are from August. The other three were created in September.””

“Can you play the one from August 12?””

She tapped it.

At first, we heard the television playing in the background. Then a door opened.

Megan's voice came through clearly.

“Lily, come here. I want to show you something.””

A small voice answered.

“Where's Daddy?””

“Your daddy is busy. Now come here.””

There was a shuffle, followed by the sound of a chair moving.

Then Megan said, “You remember what we talked about, don't you?””

Lily whispered, “I don't want to.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“I don't want to go away.””

My heart began pounding.

Megan's voice hardened.

“You aren't going away. You're going to live somewhere where people know how to take care of you.””

“But I want Mommy.””

“Your mother is too busy for you.””

“No, she's not.””

“Don't argue with me.””

A loud bang followed.

Lily screamed.

I shot to my feet.

“Stop it!””

Zoe paused the recording.

I couldn't breathe.

My daughter had been alone with Megan, crying for me, while I sat at work believing she was safe.

I pressed both hands against my mouth.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

Zoe stood and wrapped her arms around me.

“Maybe she was scared. Maybe someone told her not to.””

I thought about the bruises in August. The way Lily had stopped asking to visit Megan. The way she sometimes woke from nightmares and refused to explain them.

I had blamed stress.

Mark had blamed her imagination.

Megan had called her dramatic.

And I had allowed their explanations to silence my instincts.

I pulled away from Zoe and wiped my face.

“Play the rest.””

She hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Zoe pressed play.

Megan spoke again, sounding calmer.

“If you tell your mother what happened, she'll be very upset.””

Lily sniffled.

“I didn't do anything.””

“I didn't say you did.””

“Then why are you mad at me?””

“Because you're making this difficult for everyone.””

There was another pause.

Then a man's voice spoke from somewhere near the microphone.

It wasn't Mark.

It wasn't Daniel.

The voice was older, rougher, and unmistakably familiar.

“Has she agreed yet?””

Megan answered, “Not yet.””

“She needs to understand that this arrangement is happening whether she likes it or not.””

I looked at Zoe.

She looked as horrified as I felt.

The man continued.

“And if Chloe refuses, we'll have to use the other option.””

Megan lowered her voice.

“What other option?””

The man gave a short, humorless laugh.

“The one Mark doesn't want her to know about.””

The recording ended.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at birthdays, Christmas dinners, family barbecues, and every major event in Mark's life.

It belonged to his father.

Richard Bennett.

The man who had given us money for our first house. The man who had stood beside Mark at our wedding. The man who had held Lily in the hospital and promised to love her forever.

I stared at the tablet.

“Why would Richard be involved in this?””

Zoe swallowed.

“Maybe we should ask him.””

“No.””

I stood, suddenly certain of one thing.

“If Richard is involved, calling him now would give him time to prepare another story.””

I picked up my phone.

There was a message from Mark.

*Mark: We need to talk before you make any decisions. Please don't involve anyone else.*

Another message appeared.

*Mark: Dad is coming over tomorrow morning. He can explain everything.*

I read the words twice.

Then I showed Zoe.

She shook her head.

“He knows you found the recordings.””

I looked toward the staircase, where my daughter was sleeping.

“No,” I said quietly.

“He knows I heard enough to start asking questions.””

I typed a reply.

*Me: Tomorrow morning. Eight o'clock. Your father can explain everything in front of me.*

Mark responded immediately.

*Mark: Fine. But Chloe, promise me you won't play those recordings for Lily.*

I stared at the message.

I hadn't planned to.

But now I wondered why he was so afraid of his daughter hearing the truth.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from an unknown number.

*Unknown: If you want to know why Megan wanted Lily, ask your husband what happened to his first daughter.*

I read the sentence again.

His first daughter?

Mark had never told me he had another child.

May you like

And as I looked at the screen, a final message arrived.

*Unknown: Ask him why she disappeared.*
