Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

“Danielle,” Marcus said, holding out his phone, “what happened ten years ago?””

She didn't take it.

Officer Harris moved closer.

“Mrs. Reed, do you know who sent this message?””

“No.””

“Then why do you look as if you've seen a ghost?””

Danielle wrapped both arms around herself.

“I need a minute.””

“You've had a whole day,” Marcus replied.

“My daughter was nearly taken somewhere by a stranger, the police are standing in my living room, and now someone is telling me to question my wife about our past. So please, Danielle. Give me something.””

She glanced toward the window.

Outside, rain slid down the glass in crooked lines. A delivery truck passed slowly along the street, its headlights sweeping across the walls.

“I didn't know who Vanessa was,” Danielle said.

Marcus stared at her.

“You just said her name like you recognized it.””

“I recognized the name. Not the woman.””

“From where?””

Danielle rubbed her forehead.

“Last month, Lily came home from school and told me a woman had been waiting near the gate. She knew Lily's name. She knew which classroom she was in. She asked whether you were still working late.””

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Lily said the woman was friendly. She gave her a sticker and left.””

“A stranger was asking our daughter questions about me, and you said nothing?””

“I thought it was another parent!””

“You didn't even check?””

“I was trying to get dinner on the table, Marcus! I had a sick child the next day, your mother calling me about her medication, and bills stacked on the counter. I made a mistake!””

Officer Harris lifted a hand before Marcus could answer.

“Let's stay focused. Mrs. Reed, did Lily describe the woman?””

Danielle nodded.

“Dark hair. A little taller than me. A silver bracelet with a blue stone.””

Marcus froze.

The woman in the photograph wore a bracelet.

He could see it clearly now, circling her wrist.

“Did Lily say anything else?””

Danielle hesitated.

“She said the woman told her she had known her since before she was born.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“That's impossible.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't understand. Vanessa started working for me two years ago. Before that, I didn't know her.””

“Then maybe she isn't Vanessa.””

Officer Harris held up the phone with the photograph.

“We're going to establish who she is. But first, I need the name of anyone who has access to your devices, your home, or your daughter's accounts.””

Marcus listed his laptop, his tablet, his work phone, and the shared family email account. Danielle supplied the names of Lily's school administrator and the neighbor who had brought her home.

Officer Harris wrote everything down.

Then he asked, “Does anyone else have a key to this house?””

“My mother,” Marcus said.

“My wife’s sister, Rachel. And Vanessa has a key to my office, not here.””

Danielle looked up sharply.

“Why does Vanessa have a key to your office?””

“Because she works there.””

“She told Lily she could come by anytime.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“When?””

“Three weeks ago. Lily said the woman in the photograph had told her she could visit your office and see the Christmas decorations.””

“It's October.””

“I know, Marcus.””

Officer Harris interrupted.

“Let's get the exact timeline before we draw conclusions.””

He asked Danielle to retrieve Lily's school tablet. Danielle returned from the kitchen with a pink case and placed it on the table.

“Lily uses this to message her friends,” she explained.

“It's connected to the family account.””

The officer examined it without opening any private conversations beyond what was relevant to the reported incident.

“Did you check whether the message was sent from this device?””

“No,” Danielle said.

“I was too busy trying to find Lily.””

Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.

“Can we call her?””

Danielle's expression softened for the first time.

“She wants to talk to you.””

“Then call her.””

She dialed Rachel.

The phone rang twice before a woman's voice answered.

“Danielle? Is everything okay?””

“Is Lily there?””

“Yes. She's in the guest room. She's been asking for you.””

“Put her on, please.””

There was a rustling sound, followed by a small voice.

“Mom?””

Danielle pressed the phone to her ear.

“Baby, I'm here.””

“Is Daddy home?””

Danielle looked at Marcus.

“Yes, sweetheart. He's home.””

“Is he mad at me?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Lily, no. No, sweetheart. Daddy isn't mad at you.””

There was a pause.

“Are the police still there?””

“Yes,” Danielle said gently.

“Did they find the woman?””

“No, baby. Not yet.””

Lily sniffled.

“Mom, I didn't mean to make everybody scared.””

Danielle's eyes filled with tears.

“You didn't do anything wrong. Do you hear me? Nothing.””

“But I went to the playground.””

“Because you thought Daddy asked you to. That's not your fault.””

Marcus took the phone.

“Lily, can you tell me exactly what the message said?””

“I don't remember all of it.””

“That's okay. Just tell me what you do remember.””

“She said you wanted me to meet you. She said you had a surprise for me.””

“What kind of surprise?””

“A birthday surprise.””

Marcus glanced at the photograph.

“Your birthday was two weeks ago, honey.””

“I know.””

“Did the message say who would meet you?””

Lily went quiet.

Then she whispered, “It said someone who loves me.””

Marcus felt his throat close.

“Did it use my name?””

“Yes.””

“Did it sound like the way I talk?””

“I thought it did.””

“Did you see a picture?””

“No. Just the message.””

Officer Harris leaned closer to the phone.

“Lily, this is Officer Harris. Did you see the woman before or after you went to the playground?””

“After.””

“What did she say?””

“She said Daddy was late. She said I should come with her.””

“Did she touch you?””

“No. She held out her hand, but I ran away.””

“Good job getting somewhere safe,” the officer said.

“You did exactly the right thing.””

Lily sniffled again.

“Can I tell Daddy something?””

“Of course,” Marcus said.

Her voice became smaller.

“The woman knew my birthday.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know, sweetheart.””

“No, Daddy. She knew the other one.””

He opened his eyes.

“What other one?””

“The birthday on the card.””

Danielle stared at the phone.

Officer Harris straightened.

“What card, Lily?”” Marcus asked.

“The pink card in your desk. The one with my name on it. It said I was born on a different day.””

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then Marcus said, “Lily, listen to me. Don't look for that card. Don't touch anything. Stay with Aunt Rachel until we come get you.””

“Okay, Daddy.””

“I love you.””

“I love you too.””

The call ended.

Danielle slowly lowered her phone.

Officer Harris looked from one parent to the other.

“Mr. Reed, does your daughter have a different birth date on any official record?””

“No,” Marcus said.

“Her birthday is October twelfth. It's on her birth certificate.””

“Then what card is she talking about?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't know.””

But as he said it, a memory surfaced.

A pink envelope.

A folded card tucked into the back of his desk drawer.

He had found it years ago, on a morning when Danielle was still in the hospital after Lily's birth. He had been exhausted, terrified, and so grateful that his wife and newborn daughter were alive that he hadn't asked many questions.

The card had been written in blue ink.

*For the little girl who deserves to know the truth one day.*

He'd asked Danielle about it once.

She'd snatched it from his hands and told him it was a private note from an old friend.

They had never spoken of it again.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“Danielle, what's in that card?””

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

Officer Harris watched her carefully.

“Mrs. Reed?””

Danielle shook her head.

“I can't.””

Marcus took a step toward her.

“You can't, or you won't?””

“You don't understand.””

“Then help me understand!””

She gripped the back of the chair until her knuckles turned white.

“I promised someone I would never tell you.””

“Who?””

She looked at the photograph on the table.

“The woman in that picture.””

Marcus felt the room tilt around him.

“You knew her?””

Danielle's eyes filled with tears.

“I knew her before you did.””

“Who is she?””

Danielle finally looked directly at her husband.

“Her name wasn't Vanessa when I met her.””

Officer Harris pulled out his notebook again.

“What was her name?””

Danielle swallowed hard.

“Victoria.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Victoria who?””

Danielle's voice broke.

“Victoria Hale.””

The officer wrote down the name.

Then he stopped.

“Mrs. Reed, are you telling me this woman has used more than one identity?””

“I don't know what she's using now.””

Marcus backed away from the table.

“Why would she know Lily's birthday? Why would she have a card in my desk? And why would you keep all of this from me?””

Danielle covered her mouth.

For a moment, she looked as if she might finally tell him everything.

Instead, she whispered, “Because ten years ago, before Lily was born, Victoria told me that if you ever learned the truth, she would come back for the child.””

A sharp knock sounded at the front door.

Everyone turned.

Officer Harris drew closer to the entrance and looked through the peephole.

A woman stood on the porch, holding a small white envelope.

Dark hair.

Beige coat.

Silver bracelet with a blue stone.

Marcus recognized her from the photograph.

The woman lifted her face toward the doorbell camera.

Then she smiled.

May you like

And her lips formed three words.

*Tell him now.*
