Chapter 7: The Name Nobody Expected

“The person who started it wasn't my father.””

Chad's words hung in the ballroom.

Every face turned toward him.

I looked at my father.

He had closed his eyes, and his hands were trembling.

“Chad,” Victor warned.

“You need to stop talking.””

But Chad shook his head.

“No. I'm done protecting you.””

Victor stepped forward.

“You ungrateful little—”

“Don't!”” Chad shouted.

His voice echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers.

For the first time that evening, he wasn't trying to look powerful.

He looked terrified.

I moved closer.

“Who started the operation?””

Chad swallowed.

“Your uncle.””

I blinked.

“My uncle?””

“Daniel Carter.””

The name hit me harder than anything else that evening.

Daniel was my father's younger brother.

He had helped raise me after my mother started working night shifts. He taught me how to drive, attended my college graduation, and gave the toast at my engagement party.

He had been the first person to congratulate me when Carter Meridian became profitable.

He had also been the man who stood beside my hospital bed after the accident.

I remembered his hand resting on my shoulder.

His voice telling me to stay strong.

And his promise that he would take care of everything.

I stared at Chad.

“That's impossible.””

Chad shook his head.

“He controlled the original investment network. Whitmore Capital only provided the financial infrastructure.””

I turned toward my father.

“Dad?””

My father opened his eyes.

“I suspected Daniel was involved.””

“Suspected?””

“I didn't have proof.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

He looked devastated.

“Because Daniel was my brother.””

I stepped back.

For a moment, I couldn't recognize the man standing in front of me.

My father had spent six months investigating the people who had destroyed my life.

And he had known his own brother might be responsible.

Marcus moved closer.

“Ethan, we need to separate what we know from what we're being told. Chad's statement is important, but we need independent evidence.””

I nodded.

“Where is Daniel now?””

My father looked toward the entrance.

“He was supposed to attend tonight.””

“Was?””

“He called me an hour ago. He said he was running late.””

Marcus immediately checked his phone.

“I haven't seen him arrive.””

Chad laughed bitterly.

“He's already here.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

Chad pointed toward the upper balcony.

“He's been watching everything.””

I looked up.

The balcony curved around the ballroom, decorated with gold railings and cream-colored floral arrangements.

A man stood near one of the marble columns.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

One hand resting on the railing.

My uncle.

Daniel Carter.

He was holding a champagne glass.

And he was smiling.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Uncle Daniel?””

He raised his glass.

Then he began walking down the staircase.

Nobody spoke as he entered the ballroom.

He approached slowly, greeting guests as though he had just arrived at an ordinary family celebration.

“Ethan,” he said warmly.

He opened his arms.

“Look at you.””

I didn't move.

He stopped a few feet away.

“I heard you were recovering, but I didn't realize you'd made such progress.””

I stared at him.

“Did you arrange my accident?””

Daniel sighed.

“Straight to accusations. You always were impatient.””

“Answer me.””

He looked toward my father.

“James, perhaps you should take your son home.””

My father stepped forward.

“He's not going anywhere.””

Daniel gave him a disappointed look.

“You were always too emotional about Ethan.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Don't talk about my father.””

Daniel smiled.

“Still protective. That's good.””

He glanced at the wheelchair.

“Although I imagine the past six months have been difficult.””

I took another step toward him.

“You visited me in the hospital.””

“Of course.””

“You told me I would recover.””

“I hoped you would.””

“You told my mother everything would be fine.””

Daniel's smile weakened.

“Ethan, you're upset. I understand.””

I stared into his eyes.

“Did you know someone changed my medication?””

He didn't answer.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, we have a witness statement from a hospital employee. There are records of unauthorized medication orders and suspicious access to Mr. Carter's medical file.””

Daniel adjusted his cufflinks.

“Then you should take that information to the appropriate authorities.””

“We intend to.””

“Good.””

He turned toward me.

“Now, can we stop this performance?””

I laughed.

“A performance?””

“You've humiliated your former fiancée, accused a prominent businessman, and disrupted an engagement celebration. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?””

I pointed toward Chad.

“Your partner just admitted that Carter Meridian was used to finance human trafficking.””

Daniel's expression barely changed.

“That's a serious allegation.””

“Then explain the money.””

He sighed.

“Business investments are complicated.””

“Not when they involve people being transported against their will.””

A woman near the champagne tower began crying.

Grace stood beside her.

I recognized the woman as one of the servers.

She whispered something to Grace.

Grace's face changed.

Then she stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“My sister told me there were other employees at the hospital who received instructions about you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Who is this?””

Grace didn't answer him.

She looked at Marcus.

“My sister said the medication wasn't the only thing changed. Someone also tried to remove your identification bracelet from the hospital records.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Grace swallowed.

“So the next medication could be given to the wrong patient.””

My stomach tightened.

My father stepped closer.

“That's attempted murder.””

Daniel gave a dismissive laugh.

“Now you're inventing stories.””

But Marcus was already typing.

“Grace, I need your sister's contact information. We'll arrange a protected interview.””

Daniel looked toward her.

“Miss, I would be careful about repeating things you don't understand.””

Grace lifted her chin.

“I understand enough.””

He stared at her.

Then he turned toward me.

“You've surrounded yourself with people who don't know how the world works.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe that's why they still have a conscience.””

His smile disappeared.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.

He handed it to my father.

“James, I think it's time you stopped pretending you had nothing to do with this.””

My father took the paper.

His face changed as he read it.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel smiled.

“From the archive you thought was secure.””

My father looked at me.

Then he slowly handed me the document.

It was a bank authorization dated six months earlier.

The account holder was James Carter.

The amount was $6.2 million.

The recipient was a company called Meridian International Logistics.

I looked at my father.

“Did you receive this money?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“It's your account. Your signature.””

Marcus examined the document.

Then he looked at my father.

“Mr. Carter, this could be a serious problem.””

My father stared at the signature.

“It's forged.””

Daniel shrugged.

“That's what everyone says when the evidence is inconvenient.””

I turned toward him.

“You're trying to frame my father.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“I'm trying to remind you that you don't know everything.””

He glanced at Chad.

“Chad has made some unfortunate decisions. Victor has made some worse ones. Brooke was foolish enough to believe she could buy a future with stolen money.””

Brooke began crying harder.

Daniel continued.

“But your father?””

He smiled.

“Your father has been protecting a secret for twelve years.””

I looked at James.

“What secret?””

My father didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Ask him about the original Carter Meridian investor.””

I turned.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“Ask him whose money actually built your company.””

My father finally spoke.

“Daniel, don't.””

But my uncle had already made his decision.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother invested the first $4 million.””

I looked at my father.

He lowered his eyes.

Daniel laughed softly.

“She sold the family property to finance your company. She wanted you to believe you had built everything from nothing.””

My father shook his head.

“That's not true.””

Daniel continued.

“Your mother didn't want you to feel indebted to anyone. So we kept it quiet.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“Because the money came from an inheritance she had received from her parents. She wanted you to have the opportunity to build something without carrying the burden of knowing what she sacrificed.””

I stared at him.

“And Daniel knew?””

“Yes.””

Daniel lifted his glass.

“Which means I knew something about Carter Meridian that you never did.””

He placed the empty glass on a nearby table.

“Your mother didn't just invest money. She retained a special ownership provision.””

Marcus immediately opened the folder.

“That's impossible. We reviewed the original articles.””

Daniel smiled.

“Not all of them.””

He turned toward me.

“Your mother left behind a sealed trust agreement. Whoever controls that trust controls the original voting rights.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Can he be telling the truth?””

Marcus examined the documents.

“There's a reference to an undisclosed trust in the original filing. We never located the beneficiary records.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because I have them.””

He reached into his jacket and removed a small black envelope.

Then he handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

Standing beside a younger version of my uncle.

They were holding a document between them.

On the back, my mother's handwriting was visible.

If Ethan ever loses control of his company, give this to him.

I looked up.

“Why are you giving me this?””

Daniel's smile returned.

“Because tomorrow morning, you will have to decide whether you want to destroy your company or learn who really owns it.””

He turned toward the ballroom exit.

Marcus stepped into his path.

“Mr. Carter, you're not leaving until we establish the authenticity of these records.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You can't detain me.””

“No. But I can ask you to remain available for questioning.””

Daniel smiled.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Ask your mother why she never trusted your father with the company.””

He walked past Marcus.

Nobody stopped him.

I remained standing beneath the chandelier, holding the photograph.

My father looked as though someone had taken ten years from his life.

May you like

And suddenly, the biggest question of the night wasn't whether Brooke had betrayed me.

It was whether the family I had trusted my entire life had been hiding the truth about my company from me.
