Chapter 9: The Witness Who Betrayed My Father

“Margaret.””
She looked at me.
Then at the document in Martin's hand.
Her expression changed.
“Ethan, please.””
I stepped closer.
“Did you sign this?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was so quiet I almost missed it.
I stared at her.
“You told me my father refused the transfer.””
“He did.””
“Then why is his signature here?””
Margaret sat down slowly.
“Because I signed the witness declaration.””
Martin placed the document on the table.
“The witness statement confirms that Robert Sterling authorized the transfer in your presence.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“That statement is false.””
I felt anger rising.
“Then why did you sign it?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was threatened.””
“By whom?””
“Chad.””
She swallowed.
“He told me that if I didn't sign, he would make sure Lily disappeared.””
I glanced toward the waiting room.
My daughter was still drawing.
I lowered my voice.
“What did he do?””
Margaret took a shaky breath.
“Three days before your accident, Chad came to my office. He had photographs of Lily. He knew where she slept. He knew which school she attended.””
I stared at her.
“Lily was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“He threatened a baby?””
Margaret nodded.
“He told me that if I didn't cooperate, Brooke would take Lily somewhere nobody could find her.””
Martin pulled out a chair.
“Why didn't you report the threat?””
“Because he had already shown me that he could access private records. He knew everything about the family.””
“Did you tell Robert?””
Margaret nodded.
“I told him that evening.””
“And?””
“He refused to sign anything. He told me he would handle Chad himself.””
She looked at the document.
“The next morning, Robert called me. He said he had arranged a meeting with the investigators. He asked me to keep the original company records safe.””
“What happened afterward?””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“Chad came back.””
I leaned forward.
“When?””
“The afternoon before the accident.””
Martin frowned.
“That's not in the timeline.””
“He told me Robert had changed his mind. He said there was a new agreement and that I needed to witness it.””
“Did Robert sign it?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No. Chad brought a forged signature page.””
I looked at the document.
“Then why does it look like my father's handwriting?””
“Because Chad had access to Robert's old correspondence. He copied it.””
Martin examined the signature again.
“I suspected that.””
Margaret continued.
“I signed the witness statement because I believed Chad would leave Lily alone. But I kept a copy of the original document showing Robert's refusal.””
“Where is it?””
She looked at me.
“Your father's office.””
“Which office?””
“The original Sterling Development building.””
I turned toward Martin.
“Can we get inside?””
He nodded.
“The building is still owned by the holding company. We can arrange access.””
Margaret stood.
“I need to show you something else.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Chad standing outside the building.
The date was printed in the corner.
Three days before my accident.
Beside him was Brooke.
They were standing next to a black Mercedes.
The same vehicle shown in the old registration records.
I stared at the photograph.
“Where did you get this?””
“Your father gave it to me.””
I looked at Brooke's face in the picture.
She was smiling.
Not the nervous smile she had worn in the ballroom.
A genuine smile.
She was holding Chad's hand.
I felt something inside me break.
“How long were they together?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Did my father know?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know she was planning to marry Chad?””
“I believe he suspected it.””
I placed the photograph down.
Then I looked at Margaret.
“Why didn't you tell me any of this when I woke up?””
She began crying.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Chad?””
“Of everyone.””
I turned away.
Martin stepped closer.
“Ethan, we need to focus on the evidence.””
I nodded.
He was right.
I couldn't allow anger to make decisions for me.
But before I could speak, Lily appeared in the doorway.
“Daddy?””
I turned immediately.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
She held up her drawing.
“Look. This is my house.””
I smiled.
“It's beautiful.””
She pointed to the three figures.
“This is me. This is you. And this is Grandpa.””
My throat tightened.
“That's a wonderful picture.””
She looked at the empty space beside the figures.
“Can Grandma come too?””
I looked toward Evelyn.
She stood near the hallway, watching us.
“Of course,” I said.
“If that's what you want.””
Lily smiled.
Then she returned to her crayons.
I watched her go.
I couldn't let the past destroy her future.
At 2:15 p.m., Martin and I entered the original Sterling Development building.
The company had been operating from temporary offices during the restructuring, but the original headquarters remained untouched.
The lobby smelled of polished stone and old paper.
My father's portrait hung above the reception desk.
I stopped beneath it.
He looked exactly as I remembered.
Confident.
Kind.
A little stubborn.
Martin approached.
“Are you all right?””
I nodded.
“Let's go upstairs.””
We entered the executive floor.
My father's old office was locked.
Martin used the company access code.
The door opened.
Everything looked familiar.
The leather chairs.
The oak desk.
The framed photograph of our family.
I walked toward the desk.
My father used to sit there every morning, reading the newspaper while drinking black coffee.
I remembered sitting across from him as a teenager.
He would ask me about school, then somehow turn every conversation into a lesson about responsibility.
I touched the chair.
“I'm sorry, Dad.””
Martin remained silent.
We began searching.
The filing cabinets contained old contracts, tax documents, and company records.
After nearly an hour, Martin found a false bottom in the bottom drawer.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
My name was written on it.
I opened it.
The first page was a copy of the transfer authorization.
The second was a handwritten statement.
The third was a photograph of Chad standing outside the office.
But the most important item was a small voice recorder.
Martin pressed play.
My father's voice filled the room.
“Margaret, if you're listening to this, then something has gone wrong.””
There was a pause.
“I know Chad has threatened you. I know Brooke is involved. But I need you to understand that the company is not the most important thing anymore.””
Another pause.
“It's Ethan. And Lily.””
My eyes burned.
“I'm afraid the people closest to my son are preparing to destroy his life. I have already contacted the authorities, but I don't know how much time I have.””
My father's voice became quieter.
“If anything happens to me, the original trust must remain intact. The shares belong to Ethan and Lily. Nobody else.””
Then came a sentence that made Martin stop breathing.
“And if the accident happens, do not believe the police report until you have examined the vehicle's original inspection records.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the recorder.
“The vehicle inspection records?””
Martin nodded.
“We need to find them.””
I searched the envelope.
There was a small storage key attached to a card.
The card carried the name of a private automotive testing facility.
Martin immediately called the facility.
After several minutes, he hung up.
“They still have archived inspection records.””
“For the Mercedes?””
“Yes.””
“Can we obtain them?””
“They require authorization from the registered owner or a legal request.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Then we'll get the legal request.””
Martin nodded.
But before he could make another call, his phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
His expression changed.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
“Ethan, Brooke has been released from the clinic.””
“Released?””
“She left before the police could complete the interview.””
“Where is she?””
“They're trying to locate her.””
I felt a familiar coldness.
“Does she know we're here?””
Martin looked toward the office door.
“Apparently.””
He showed me a message from the building's security manager.
Someone had accessed the underground parking garage using an old executive access card.
The entry record showed a name.
Brooke Bennett.
I stared at the screen.
“She was here?””
“Twenty minutes ago.””
We hurried downstairs.
The garage was nearly empty.
A security guard approached.
“Mr. Sterling?””
“Yes?””
“A woman left something for you.””
He handed me a small package.
It was wrapped in brown paper.
My name was written across the top.
Martin immediately warned me not to open it until security had checked it.
After inspection, we opened the package.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed my father standing beside a hospital bed.
I recognized the room.
My hospital room.
But the photograph had been taken from outside the doorway.
On the back was a handwritten message.
You were never supposed to wake up.
I felt my stomach turn.
Martin examined the photograph.
“There's a date.””
I looked.
It was the night of the accident.
A second item lay beneath it.
A small hospital visitor log.
The names of everyone who had entered my room that night were listed.
Brooke.
Chad.
Margaret.
And one unfamiliar name.
Dr. Samuel Pierce.
I frowned.
“Who is that?””
Martin checked his phone.
“A physician at the hospital where you were treated.””
I remembered the name vaguely.
He had been one of the doctors who reviewed my medical condition.
“Why is he on the visitor list?””
Martin turned the page.
The entry beside his name made my blood run cold.
*11:47 p.m. — Authorized access to patient medication records.*
I looked at Martin.
“Find him.””
Martin immediately began making calls.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through.
It was Brooke.
“Ethan.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
“Somewhere Chad can't hear me.””
“What do you want?””
“I need to tell you the truth.””
“You've had three years.””
“I know.””
“Then talk.””
She began crying.
“Chad didn't just arrange the company transfers. He arranged the accident.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Did you know?””
“No.””
I almost laughed.
“Don't lie to me.””
“I swear I didn't know he planned to kill you.””
“Planned?””
She went silent.
I felt my blood turn cold.
“Brooke, what do you mean?””
She whispered something.
Then I heard a door slam in the background.
Her breathing became frantic.
“Ethan, listen carefully. The man who changed your medical records is still working at the hospital.””
I looked at Martin.
“Who?””
She whispered the name.
“Dr. Pierce.””
Then the call ended.
Martin stared at me.
“Did she say Pierce?””
I nodded.
He immediately called Detective Bennett.
But before he could speak, another call came through.
This time, it was the hospital.
A nurse was crying.
“Mr. Sterling?””
“Yes?””
“I'm calling about your daughter.””
My heart stopped.
“What's happened to Lily?””
“She's safe,” the nurse said quickly.
“But someone just arrived at the family services office claiming to be her biological father.””
I stared at Martin.
“What?””
The nurse continued.
“He has legal documents. He says his name is Chad Wilson.””
I gripped the phone.
“Don't let him near her.””
“We haven't. But Mr. Sterling, there's something else.””
“What?””
“The documents he brought contain a DNA test.””
I couldn't breathe.
May you like
The nurse lowered her voice.
“The test claims Chad Wilson is Lily's biological father.””
