Chapter 9: The Father Who Stole His Own Daughter

I read the laboratory report three times.

The result didn't change.

Richard Williams.

Biological father.

99.99%.

The man whose photograph hung in the mansion as my grandfather was my father.

The man who had ordered my mother taken away.

The man who had allowed me to grow up believing I was unwanted.

He was the reason I had never known my own family.

I slowly lowered the paper.

"You're my father?""

Richard adjusted his jacket.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"How?""

Rebecca began crying.

Richard answered before she could.

"Your mother was young. She was vulnerable. Our relationship was complicated.""

"Complicated?""

I looked at Rebecca.

"Mom, what is he talking about?""

She shook her head.

"Your father is Daniel Carter. I loved Daniel. He raised you with me.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Daniel was not your biological father.""

"He was my father," I said.

Richard ignored me.

"Rebecca became involved with Daniel after our relationship ended. She wanted to marry him and leave the family.""

Rebecca struggled to sit up.

"Stop lying.""

Richard turned toward her.

"You should rest.""

"Don't tell me what to do!""

Her voice cracked.

It was the first time I had heard her raise it.

She continued.

"You were the one who refused to accept that I wanted a life without you.""

I looked between them.

"Mom, please explain.""

Rebecca took my hand.

"When I was twenty-two, Richard controlled almost every part of my life. He decided where I worked, who I saw, and how I spent my money. He told everyone he was protecting me.""

She looked at Richard.

"But he wanted control. Not love.""

Richard's expression remained cold.

Rebecca continued.

"When I met Daniel, everything changed. He treated me like an equal. He listened.

He made me laugh. He never tried to own me.""

She looked at me.

"Daniel knew about my relationship with Richard. He knew Richard was your biological father. But he didn't care. He wanted to raise you as his own.""

I felt tears sliding down my face.

"Then why did you leave him?""

"I didn't.""

Rebecca squeezed my hand.

"Richard threatened him. He said Daniel would lose his job, his reputation, and eventually his life if he didn't stay away from us.""

James looked horrified.

"Father, is this true?""

Richard turned toward him.

"Stay out of this.""

Rebecca shook her head.

"Daniel refused. He took me away from the mansion. We rented a small apartment and started building a life together.""

She smiled faintly.

"Your father used to bring me flowers from the grocery store. He couldn't afford roses, so he bought daisies.""

I smiled through my tears.

Rebecca continued.

"When I became pregnant, Daniel was overjoyed. He painted your nursery himself. He bought a tiny yellow blanket and kept saying he couldn't wait to teach you how to ride a bicycle.""

My chest tightened.

"Did he know Richard was my biological father?""

"Yes. He never once treated you differently.""

She paused.

"Then Daniel discovered the financial records.""

James looked at Richard.

"That's why he was killed.""

Richard sighed.

"Daniel was reckless.""

Rebecca's eyes burned.

"You had his brakes cut.""

"Enough.""

"You had him killed!""

Richard stepped toward the bed.

James blocked him.

"Don't come closer.""

Richard looked at his son.

"Move.""

"No.""

For several seconds, father and son stared at each other.

Then Richard turned toward me.

"Emily, you need to understand something. I was trying to protect you.""

I laughed.

The sound came out broken.

"From what? My mother? My father? The truth?""

"From a life that would have destroyed you.""

"You destroyed it!""

My voice echoed through the room.

"You took my mother. You let me grow up in foster care. You made me believe I was abandoned. And now you want me to accept you as my father?""

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"I gave you life.""

"Daniel gave me love.""

He flinched.

I stepped closer.

"That's the difference between you.""

Richard looked toward James.

"Control this situation.""

James shook his head.

"No.""

Richard's face darkened.

"James, I built everything you have.""

"And you used it to destroy everyone around you.""

Richard pointed toward Rebecca.

"She was unstable. She was a danger to herself.""

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

"You kept me drugged for fourteen years.""

The room fell silent.

I turned toward her.

"What?""

Rebecca nodded.

"They gave me medication without explaining what it was. Sometimes I couldn't remember entire days. They told me I had a neurological condition. They told me nobody wanted to see me.""

She looked at Richard.

"Every time I tried to leave, they said you had died. They said Margaret was dead. They said Emily was dead.""

My stomach twisted.

"You thought I was dead?""

Rebecca nodded.

"Until the day I saw your photograph on the computer system.""

She began crying.

"I recognized your eyes.""

I held her hand.

"How long ago?""

"Six months.""

"Six months?""

She nodded.

"I tried to contact the outside world. They caught me.""

Richard spoke calmly.

"She was confused.""

I turned toward him.

"Stop calling her confused!""

He looked at me.

"Your mother has been receiving treatment for years.""

"Against her will.""

"She needed help.""

"Then why was she locked in this building?""

Richard didn't answer.

James removed his phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Richard smiled.

"Go ahead.""

James dialed.

The call didn't connect.

He tried again.

No signal.

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

"This facility has a private communications system. Your phone won't work here.""

James lowered it.

Richard turned toward me.

"Come with me, Emily. We can discuss your future somewhere comfortable.""

I stared at him.

"My future?""

"Your mother needs continued treatment. Margaret needs specialized care. You need financial security.""

He reached into his jacket and removed a document.

"I've prepared an agreement.""

I didn't take it.

He placed it on the bedside table.

"Your legal identity can be corrected. You can inherit the Williams estate. You'll never have to work another day in your life.""

I looked at the paper.

Then at my mother.

"Is that what you think I want?""

Richard shrugged.

"Everyone wants something.""

I picked up the document.

It was an inheritance agreement.

But beneath the title was another clause.

*PERMANENT MEDICAL GUARDIANSHIP AUTHORIZATION.*

I read it carefully.

Richard wanted me to sign away my mother's right to leave the facility.

And he wanted legal authority over Margaret's medical decisions.

My hands began shaking.

"You want me to sign this?""

"It's a reasonable arrangement.""

"You want to keep them here.""

"I want to keep the family protected.""

I tore the document in half.

Richard's face went red.

"You ungrateful little—"

James stepped forward.

"Don't.""

Richard looked at him.

"You're choosing them over me?""

James nodded.

"Yes.""

Richard laughed.

"Then you lose everything.""

James reached into his pocket and removed a small flash drive.

I stared at it.

"What is that?""

"The archive files. I copied everything before we left the mansion.""

Richard's expression changed.

James continued.

"Medical records. Transfer orders. Financial transactions. Your signed instructions.""

Richard stepped toward him.

"Give me that.""

James moved backward.

"No.""

Richard gestured toward the security guards outside.

Two men entered.

One grabbed James's arm.

The other moved toward the bed.

I stood between them.

"Don't touch my mother!""

The guard seized my shoulder.

I struggled.

Then Rebecca shouted.

"STOP!""

Everyone froze.

She pulled herself upright, despite the pain.

Her face was pale, but her eyes were fierce.

"You've taken fourteen years from me.""

She looked at Richard.

"You don't get another second.""

Richard approached the bed.

"Sit down, Rebecca.""

"No.""

She reached beneath the blanket.

I saw something metallic in her hand.

A small emergency call button.

She pressed it.

A loud alarm sounded throughout the facility.

Red lights began flashing.

The security guards exchanged nervous glances.

Richard turned toward the door.

"What did you do?""

Rebecca smiled through her tears.

"Something I should have done fourteen years ago.""

Footsteps thundered through the hallway.

Then a woman's voice shouted:

"State police! Nobody move!""

Richard's expression collapsed.

James looked at Rebecca.

"How?""

She pointed toward the small recorder on the bedside table.

"When I realized Emily might find me, I recorded everything. I sent copies to a former nurse who helped me contact an attorney.""

I stared at her.

"You knew I was coming?""

She shook her head.

"No, baby. I hoped.""

The room filled with officers.

Two security guards dropped their hands.

Richard attempted to walk toward the exit.

An officer blocked him.

"Richard Williams?""

Richard straightened his jacket.

"Do you know who I am?""

The officer showed him a warrant.

"We know exactly who you are.""

They placed handcuffs around his wrists.

Richard turned toward me.

"Emily, tell them this is a misunderstanding.""

I looked at him.

For a moment, I saw the powerful businessman from the mansion.

The man who had controlled everyone.

The man who had believed money could erase every crime.

Then I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

I took her hand.

"No.""

Richard stared at me.

I continued.

"I finally know who I am. And you're not going to take that away from me.""

The officers led him out.

But before he disappeared, he turned toward James.

"You're going to regret this.""

James looked at him.

"I already regret fourteen years.""

The door closed.

For the first time in my life, I felt as though a locked door had finally opened.

An hour later, paramedics examined Rebecca.

Her condition was stable, but she needed proper medical care and rehabilitation.

Margaret was brought into the room.

The moment she saw Rebecca, she began crying.

Rebecca reached for her.

"Mom.""

Margaret bent forward and held her daughter's face between her hands.

She signed through tears.

I thought I had lost you.

Rebecca kissed her palm.

"I know.""

I stood beside the bed, watching three generations of my family hold each other.

James remained near the doorway.

He hadn't tried to approach Rebecca again.

Finally, he spoke.

"Emily.""

I turned.

He held out the flash drive.

"Everything is on here. Your father had been hiding the original records in several locations. These are copies.""

I took it.

"Thank you.""

He nodded.

Then he looked toward Rebecca.

"I don't expect you to forgive me.""

Rebecca didn't answer.

James swallowed.

"I should have protected you.""

She looked at him for a long time.

Then she signed one sentence.

You should have.

He lowered his head.

An officer approached.

"Mr. Williams, we need your statement.""

James nodded.

As he walked away, I noticed something on the television monitor.

A file had opened automatically.

It contained an old recording.

The title was:

*DANIEL CARTER — FINAL TESTIMONY.*

I clicked it.

A man's face appeared.

The same man from the photograph.

My father.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Rebecca, if you're watching this, something has happened to me.""

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

He continued.

"Emily, if you're old enough to understand these words, I need you to know something.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Richard Williams isn't the only person who knows the truth about your birth.""

I froze.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

"There's another child.""

Rebecca's face went white.

Daniel continued.

"Emily, you have a brother.""

The recording ended.

I turned toward my mother.

"Mom?""

Rebecca began shaking her head.

"No.""

"Is it true?""

She looked at me.

Then whispered:

"Your brother has been living in the Williams mansion this entire time.""

My heart stopped.

I thought of James.

But Rebecca shook her head.

"Not James.""

She reached for my hand.

"Your twin brother.""

And before I could ask his name, an officer entered carrying a photograph.

"Emily Johnson?""

I turned.

He placed it on the table.

The photograph showed a young man standing beside Richard.

On the back was a handwritten name.

*ETHAN WILLIAMS.*
