Chapter 8: The Guardian Nobody Expected

“Vanessa.””

She didn't look at me.

“Tell me what you signed.””

Her fingers tightened around the strap of her handbag.

Outside, Richard and Caleb were approaching the building.

Daniel immediately placed the trust documents inside his briefcase.

“Marcus, we need to move.””

“No. Not until she answers.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I signed a declaration.””

“What declaration?””

“Your father wanted Maya's trust protected in case something happened to him.””

“Protected from whom?””

She looked at me.

“From anyone who tried to claim ownership without her consent.””

“That doesn't explain the declaration.””

Vanessa sat on an old equipment case.

“The night Maya was born, your father came to the hospital. He brought several documents. He said the trust needed another layer of protection.””

I remembered that night.

Maya had arrived three weeks early. Vanessa had spent hours in labor, and my father had stayed in the waiting room with me.

He had brought coffee, sandwiches, and an old photograph of my mother.

But I didn't remember seeing any documents.

“What did he ask you to sign?””

“A statement confirming that I would never use my position as trustee to benefit myself.””

I stared at her.

“And you signed it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you help Caleb?””

She covered her face.

“Because I thought I could change things later.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mrs. Hale, what happens if the trustee violates that declaration?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Her authority can be suspended.””

“Immediately?””

“If there's evidence of deliberate misconduct, yes.””

Daniel turned toward me.

“That's important.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you understand what you were agreeing to?””

She nodded.

“Your father explained everything.””

“And you still went ahead with the transfer.””

Her tears began falling.

“Yes.””

For the first time, she looked directly at me.

“I thought I could take back what was mine without hurting Maya. I convinced myself that once the transfer was finished, I'd be able to restore the trust and give her everything she deserved.””

“You used her name as cover.””

“I know.””

“You let Caleb destroy her invention.””

“I know.””

“You certified a signature you knew was false.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I know, Marcus.””

I turned away.

I couldn't bear looking at her.

Outside, the laboratory door rattled.

Someone had tried the handle.

Daniel signaled the security specialist.

A moment later, Richard's voice came through the door.

“Marcus! We need to talk.””

I walked toward it.

“About what?””

“Your father's documents.””

“Funny. You seemed very interested in keeping them hidden.””

Richard sighed.

“Open the door.””

“No.””

Caleb's voice followed.

“Marcus, stop making this worse.””

I laughed.

“You should have thought about that before destroying my daughter's invention.””

Richard spoke again.

“Those documents are not what you think they are.””

Daniel quietly moved beside me.

“Don't negotiate.””

I ignored him.

“Then explain them.””

A pause.

Richard lowered his voice.

“Your father was not a good businessman. He made promises he couldn't keep. He created a trust without properly considering the commercial implications.””

“My father had his lawyers prepare the documents.””

“I was one of those lawyers.””

The words hit me.

I looked at Daniel.

Richard had been involved with the original trust from the beginning.

He wasn't simply the chairman who had helped Caleb commit fraud.

He had been one of the people entrusted with protecting the patents.

And he'd betrayed that responsibility.

Richard continued.

“Marcus, your father wanted to keep the technology within the family. But Northstar couldn't survive under that arrangement. I helped him create a structure that would allow the company to grow.””

“Then why are you trying to transfer the patents to Beacon Holdings?””

“Because the trust has become an obstacle.””

“An obstacle to what?””

“To progress.””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

“You've been using Maya's identity.””

“We created a provisional administrative account. It was necessary to retrieve archived materials.””

“She never authorized it.””

“She's a minor. Her trustee can authorize it.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I never authorized that account.””

Silence followed.

Richard's voice became colder.

“Vanessa, don't make this harder than it needs to be.””

I looked at her.

“Did you give him permission?””

“No.””

Richard sighed.

“Then perhaps you should tell Marcus why the original trust amendment contains your signature.””

Vanessa stood.

“Because your office prepared it.””

“And you witnessed it.””

“Under instructions from his father!””

Richard laughed.

“You were very willing to sign it when the arrangement benefited you.””

Vanessa stepped toward the door.

“You promised me Maya would never be involved.””

“And I kept that promise until you allowed her to become involved yourself.””

Daniel raised his hand.

“That's enough. Any further discussion will take place through counsel.””

Richard ignored him.

“Marcus, listen. Your father built a sentimental arrangement around a child who wasn't even old enough to speak. He left the adults with a mess. I'm offering you a way out.””

“By stealing the patents?””

“By selling them. The buyer will invest hundreds of millions in further development.””

“And how much do you get?””

Richard didn't answer.

Caleb laughed.

“That's what he wants to discuss?””

I opened the door.

The security specialist immediately stepped between us.

Richard stood in the hallway with his hands behind his back.

Caleb looked less confident than he had at the board meeting.

“You should leave,” Daniel said.

Richard smiled.

“Of course.””

Then he looked at me.

“But before I do, I think you should know that your father didn't name you as the person responsible for protecting this trust.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Richard glanced at Maya's name on the document.

“Because the person who was meant to replace your mother wasn't chosen by your father.””

Daniel stiffened.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard smiled.

“Read the declaration.””

He walked away.

Caleb followed him, but not before turning back toward me.

“Marcus, you're going to regret choosing a twelve-year-old's imaginary company over the one we built together.””

I stepped forward.

“We didn't build it together.””

His smile disappeared.

“I built the foundation. You just put your name on it.””

Then he left.

Daniel locked the laboratory door.

We examined the trust appendix together.

The sealed declaration was not included in the original envelope.

According to the documents, it had been filed separately with a private estate attorney.

My father had used a legal firm that closed years ago.

Daniel searched its successor records.

At first, he found nothing.

Then he located a reference to a confidential estate file transferred to another law office.

The file had been accessed three times in the previous six months.

Two accesses were attributed to Richard.

The third was attributed to Caleb.

“Why would Caleb access it?”” I asked.

“To discover the successor guardian,” Daniel replied.

“Who is it?””

“We need the declaration.””

He called the firm.

After several minutes, he put the call on speaker.

A woman answered.

“Good evening. Harrington Legal.””

“This is Daniel Cho, representing Marcus Hale. We're requesting access to the sealed declaration associated with the Hale Family Innovation Trust.””

A keyboard clicked.

“Do you have the estate reference?””

Daniel read the number.

Another pause.

“I see the file.””

“Who was the named successor?””

“I'm afraid I can't disclose the contents without identity verification and court authorization.””

Daniel explained the circumstances.

The woman listened carefully.

Then she said, “There is an additional instruction attached to the file.””

“What instruction?””

“The named successor must appear in person to activate the appointment.””

Daniel glanced at me.

“Can you confirm whether that person is alive?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

I stood.

“What?””

Daniel raised his hand.

The woman continued.

“The successor guardian was confirmed as alive during a verification process conducted six weeks ago.””

Six weeks.

The exact time Caleb's scheme had accelerated.

“Was the verification completed by Richard Coleman?”” Daniel asked.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Can you tell us the name?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she asked for the identity of the caller.

Daniel provided his credentials.

There was another pause.

Finally, she said, “The person named in the declaration is expected to attend an appointment tomorrow morning. I can provide the name once the required identity verification is completed in person.””

I ended the call.

“We're not waiting until tomorrow.””

Daniel shook his head.

“We may not have a choice. But we know something important.””

“What?””

“Richard has been accessing the file. He knows the successor is alive. And he doesn't want that person involved.””

I looked at the original photograph of my father.

My mother's handwritten note was still folded inside the envelope.

I remembered the years after her death.

The arguments with my father. The distance between us. The things he never explained.

Perhaps he had been protecting something.

Or perhaps he'd been waiting for someone.

Back at the house, Maya was sitting in the living room with her notebook.

She looked up when I entered.

“Did you find the old files?””

“We found some.””

“Did they belong to Mom?””

“Partly.””

Maya nodded.

She didn't seem surprised.

Then she turned her notebook toward me.

She had drawn the damaged Beacon from memory.

Every component was carefully labeled. Even the broken pieces had been positioned where they belonged.

“I'm going to rebuild it,” she said.

I sat beside her.

“I'll help.””

She smiled faintly.

“Can we make it better?””

“Absolutely.””

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

“Maya?””

My daughter immediately closed the notebook.

Vanessa stopped.

“I just wanted to talk.””

Maya didn't answer.

I moved closer to her.

“Not now.””

Vanessa nodded.

But before she left, Maya spoke.

“Mom?””

Vanessa turned.

“Why did you tell me I wasn't allowed to be an inventor?””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“I never said you couldn't.””

“You said the Beacon was a waste of time.””

“I was wrong.””

“You said Dad wouldn't care about it.””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“I was wrong about that, too.””

Maya looked down.

“You said I was just copying things other people had already made.””

Vanessa approached slowly.

“I was angry. I said things I shouldn't have.””

Maya's eyes filled.

“You also broke it.””

Vanessa couldn't answer.

After a moment, Maya stood and carried her notebook upstairs.

I watched her disappear.

Then Vanessa began crying.

“I know she hates me.””

“She doesn't hate you.””

“Then why won't she look at me?””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Because she doesn't know whether she can trust you.””

Vanessa covered her face.

I left her in the living room.

At 10:16 p.m., Daniel called.

“I found something.””

I closed the bedroom door.

“What?””

“The confidential declaration has an associated witness record. Richard requested a copy six weeks ago.””

“And?””

“The witness was not a lawyer.””

“Who was it?””

Daniel paused.

“Your father named someone who was already part of the family.””

“Who?””

“Your mother named the successor guardian in her own handwriting.””

I waited.

Then Daniel said, “It's your sister.””

My heart stopped.

I hadn't spoken to my sister, Julia, in eleven years.

After our father's funeral, we'd argued over his estate. She believed he had kept certain things from her. I believed she was angry because he had left the family company in my hands.

She eventually moved away.

We lost contact.

“Julia is the successor guardian?””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

“I don't know. But I found a current address in the estate verification records.””

“Why did nobody tell me she was involved?””

“Because she never accepted the appointment formally.””

I looked through the bedroom window.

A car was parked across the street.

Its headlights were off.

“Daniel, someone's watching the house.””

“Are you sure?””

The car's engine started.

It moved slowly past the gate.

Then my phone vibrated.

A text message appeared from an unknown number.

*Your sister was warned to stay away from this family. You should ask her why she disappeared eleven years ago.*

A second message followed.

*And Marcus, don't let her near Maya.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I realized something.

May you like

Richard hadn't been trying to keep my mother’s successor guardian from finding the trust.

He had been trying to keep my sister from finding out what had happened to her.
