Chapter 5: The Brother Who Buried the Truth

Daniel stood motionless, staring at the woman he had mourned for seven years.

Elisa looked older, thinner, and more fragile than the woman in his memories. But when she reached for him, her fingers trembled in the familiar way they always had when she was frightened.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He took one step toward her.

Then another.

He stopped just short of touching her.

“Are you real?””

Elisa's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Are you really my wife?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me bury an empty coffin?””

Her face crumpled.

“I didn't know you had buried one.””

Daniel laughed once, a broken sound that frightened even him.

“You didn't know? Elisa, I spent seven years visiting a grave. I told our daughter that you were dead. I watched her grow up believing she had been abandoned by the person she loved most.””

“I know.””

“No. You don't know.””

He struck the table with his palm.

“You don't know what it was like to wake up every morning and remember that I had been brushing my teeth beside you the night before you disappeared. You don't know what it was like to tell Lily she would never hear your voice again.””

Elisa flinched.

Daniel's anger faltered when he saw her reaction, but the pain remained.

“Why didn't you come home?””

She looked toward the doorway.

“Because the first time I tried, someone threatened to kill Lily.””

Michael lowered his head.

Daniel turned on him.

“What did you do?””

Michael swallowed.

“Seven years ago, I received a call from Elisa. She was injured, hiding in a roadside clinic outside Asheville. She said the car had been forced off the road, but she didn't know who had done it.””

Elisa shook her head.

“I knew who had ordered it. I just didn't know who had carried it out.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Who ordered it?””

Elisa glanced at Michael.

“Your father.””

The words struck harder than the gunshot at the house.

Daniel stepped back.

“My father died three years ago.””

“I know.””

“My father adored you.””

“He adored the woman he believed I was.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. That doesn't make sense.””

Elisa reached into her pocket and pulled out a small photograph. It showed Daniel's father, Richard Hayes, standing outside a private medical facility. Beside him was a younger Brielle.

Daniel recognized the place.

It was the same clinic where Elisa had once volunteered as a nurse.

“What is this?”” he asked.

Elisa sat down slowly.

“Your father had been using the clinic to conceal payments to people involved in a financial scheme. I discovered it accidentally. I found records showing that money from the Hayes Foundation had been transferred to companies that didn't exist.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My father ran the foundation.””

“Yes. And he used it to hide the money he was stealing from the company.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Elisa contacted me because she knew I was the only person in the family who might believe her.””

Daniel looked at his brother.

“Did you?””

“At first, no. I thought she was mistaken. I thought Dad had made an accounting error.””

“And then?””

Michael's voice broke.

“She showed me the records. I realized she was right.””

Elisa folded her hands.

“Richard discovered that I had copied the documents. He knew I was going to the police. He arranged the crash to frighten me into silence.””

“Frighten you?”” Daniel repeated.

“He tried to kill you.””

“He didn't expect me to survive.””

Daniel looked down at the photograph in his hand.

“And Brielle?””

“She was working for him,” Elisa said.

“She was handling the clinic's accounts. She knew about the money, and she knew what I had found.””

Michael rubbed his face.

“After the crash, Dad told me Elisa had died. He showed me the police report and said the family needed to protect its reputation. He told me that if I revealed what I knew, Lily would be taken away from you.””

Daniel's voice turned dangerously quiet.

“So you helped him hide the truth.””

Michael looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Did you know Elisa was alive?””

“I knew she had survived. I didn't know where she was for the first few months. Dad's people moved her between safe houses. He told me it was temporary, that he was keeping her away from the people who had attacked her.””

“You believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

Daniel's hands shook.

“And when you learned the truth?””

Michael couldn't meet his eyes.

“By then, Dad had arranged for someone to watch Lily. He said that if Elisa came back, they would make it look like she had kidnapped her own daughter. He had enough influence to make the accusation stick.””

Elisa reached for Daniel's hand.

“I tried to contact you twice. The first time, I was intercepted. The second time, I heard Lily's voice on a recording. Richard told me he would hurt her if I came home.””

Daniel pulled his hand away.

“Why didn't you contact the police?””

“I did. A detective agreed to help me. Two days later, he disappeared from the case. A week after that, someone broke into the place where I was hiding.””

“Then why return now?””

Elisa looked toward the wooden box.

“Because Richard is dead. Because Brielle is trying to finish what he started. And because Lily is old enough to be in danger.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“What does Brielle want?””

“The original records.””

He glanced at the envelope.

“What's in there?””

“The names of everyone who helped Richard conceal the money. The dates of the payments. The account numbers. And the proof that Brielle continued the operation after his death.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would she want that now?””

“Because she's planning to sell the company. The records could destroy the deal.””

Michael looked up.

“She's been trying to get the company into her hands for months.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“You knew?””

“I suspected it. She approached me about acquiring my shares. She said you were distracted by the wedding and wouldn't notice the paperwork.””

Daniel felt sick.

The company had been his father's life's work. Daniel had spent years trying to make it honest, unaware that someone close to him was dismantling it from the inside.

“How much money?”” he asked.

Michael named a figure.

Daniel stared at him.

“That much?””

“More,” Elisa said.

“The foundation was only one part of it.””

A distant siren sounded outside.

Elisa rose abruptly.

“We need to leave.””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Not until you tell me everything.””

“I will. But we have to get Lily first.””

“She's at the house with the police.””

Elisa's face drained of color.

“No.””

“What?””

“Daniel, Brielle knows where Lily is. She has people inside the security company. If she escaped custody, she could already be on her way back.””

Daniel pulled out his phone and called Detective Morgan.

The call went straight to voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Michael rushed to the door.

“Dan, we need to move.””

A loud crack echoed above them.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Then a man's voice shouted from outside.

“Police! Everyone stay where you are!””

Daniel looked at Elisa.

She grabbed his arm.

“That's not the police.””

“How do you know?””

“Because the police don't use that phrase when they're trying to make you surrender.””

A second voice called from the dock.

“Mr. Hayes! We have your daughter!””

Daniel's heart stopped.

He ran toward the stairs.

Elisa seized his wrist.

“Wait!””

“That's my daughter!””

“It's a trap!””

Another shout came from outside.

“Daddy!””

Lily's voice.

Daniel tore free and raced up the stairs.

Michael followed, with Elisa close behind.

At the top, Daniel peered through a narrow window.

Two men stood on the dock beside a black SUV. One wore a security uniform. The other held Lily by the arm.

She was struggling to pull away.

“Let me go!”” she screamed.

Daniel threw open the door.

“Get your hands off my daughter!””

The man holding Lily turned.

For one second, Daniel saw his face clearly.

It was the same man he had seen in the photograph beside Richard Hayes.

The man who had supposedly died in the car accident seven years earlier.

Daniel froze.

The stranger smiled.

“Hello, Daniel. Your father sends his regards.””

Then he pulled Lily into the SUV.

Daniel ran.

Michael tackled the second man while Elisa shouted for Daniel to stop. But the SUV's engine roared to life, and the tires spun across the wet dock.

Daniel reached the edge just as the vehicle disappeared around the bend.

Lily's small hand appeared in the rear window.

“Daddy!””

Then the trees swallowed the car.

Daniel stood at the water's edge, breathing hard.

Elisa came up beside him, her face white with terror.

“Who was that man?”” Daniel demanded.

She stared at the road.

“His name is Victor Hale. He was your father's head of security.””

“I thought he died in the crash.””

“He didn't.””

Daniel turned to her.

“Then whose body was in the car?””

Elisa's silence answered him.

A phone rang inside the boathouse.

Michael returned from the doorway, holding Daniel's phone.

“It's Brielle.””

Daniel snatched it from him.

“Where is my daughter?””

Brielle laughed softly.

“She's safe, for now.””

“If you touch her—”

“You'll do what? Call the police? The police who couldn't find your wife for seven years?””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“What do you want?””

“The key. The original records. And Elisa.””

Elisa stepped closer to the phone.

“Brielle, let Lily go.””

A silence followed.

Then Brielle's voice changed.

“Elisa. You really are alive.””

“Let the child go.””

“You should have stayed dead.””

“And you should have stayed out of our lives.””

Brielle laughed.

“You still think this is about revenge. It isn't. It's about survival.””

“Then why take Lily?””

“Because Daniel finally has something he can't afford to lose.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Tell me where to bring the records.””

“There's an old warehouse near the river. You'll receive the address in five minutes. Bring the key and the envelope. Come alone.””

“You said you wanted Elisa.””

“I do.””

“Then I'll bring her.””

Brielle's voice dropped.

“No. You will bring the records. Elisa will come to me on her own.””

The call ended.

Daniel lowered the phone.

Michael stood beside him, blood running from a cut above his eyebrow.

“We have to get her back.””

Daniel looked at the lake, where the fading ripples from the departing SUV were already disappearing.

“We will.””

Elisa touched his shoulder.

“Daniel, there's something else you need to know.””

He turned.

She was crying now, but her voice was steady.

“Brielle didn't choose Lily because she's your daughter.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why?””

Elisa looked at the wooden box in his hands.

“Because Lily knows where the last copy of the records is hidden.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Elisa opened the envelope and pulled out the child's drawing.

It showed a house, a lake, and a little girl standing between two adults.

At the bottom, in Lily's handwriting, were five words.

*THE SECRET IS UNDER MY BED.*

Daniel's blood turned cold.

The last copy wasn't in the boathouse.

May you like

It was in his daughter's bedroom.

And Brielle had known it all along.
