Chapter 5: The Blue Room Beneath the House

Daniel Brooks arrived at the Carter residence shortly after nine the following morning.

He wasn't alone.

Eleanor Collins sat in the passenger seat of his car, holding a folder of old household records.

The house stood at the end of a quiet suburban street in Atlanta.

White columns framed the entrance. Carefully trimmed bushes lined the driveway. A large American flag hung beside the garage.

From the outside, it looked like the kind of home where nothing terrible could ever happen.

But Daniel had learned that appearances were often the most carefully maintained lies.

Victoria had been ordered by the court not to remove or destroy any property connected to the investigation.

An independent investigator had accompanied Daniel to document the premises.

Emily was staying temporarily with a court-approved family friend.

Michael remained in custody.

Daniel rang the doorbell.

A housekeeper opened the door.

“Mr. Brooks?””

“Yes. We're here under the court's preservation order.””

The housekeeper stepped aside.

“Mrs. Hayes is upstairs.””

Daniel entered.

The living room smelled of expensive candles and freshly polished furniture.

Family photographs lined the fireplace.

Most showed Victoria with Sarah and Emily.

There was not a single photograph of Michael.

Eleanor noticed.

“She removed them,” she whispered.

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“After Michael was arrested. There used to be pictures of all three of them everywhere.””

Daniel looked toward the fireplace.

“Did Sarah ever mention a blue room?””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“She called it the records room.””

“Where is it?””

“In the basement.””

They walked through the kitchen.

Daniel stopped beside a narrow door near the pantry.

“Is that the basement entrance?””

Eleanor nodded.

But when he tried the handle, it wouldn't move.

“Locked.””

A voice came from behind them.

“What are you doing?””

Victoria stood at the top of the stairs.

She wore a cream-colored blouse and black trousers. Her hair was neatly arranged, and her gold necklace caught the morning light.

Her eyes moved from Daniel to Eleanor.

“You brought her here?””

Daniel held up the court order.

“We're documenting the property and locating the security equipment identified in the evidence records.””

Victoria descended the stairs.

“This is my home.””

“It was also Sarah's home, and it contains potential evidence related to her death.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“You have no right to rummage through my private belongings.””

Daniel showed her the order again.

“The court has authorized the inspection.””

She stared at the document.

Then she looked at Eleanor.

“You should have stayed away.””

Eleanor's face tightened.

“I stayed away for eleven months because I was afraid of you.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Afraid of me? You were a housekeeper.””

“I was there when Sarah cried because she couldn't understand why her own mother was threatening her.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Watch your mouth.””

Daniel moved between them.

“That's enough. Please show us the basement.””

Victoria hesitated.

Then she walked to a small cabinet beside the pantry and removed a key.

The lock clicked.

The basement door opened.

A narrow staircase led downward.

Daniel switched on the light.

The air smelled of dust, old cardboard, and something metallic.

At the bottom stood several storage shelves.

Christmas decorations occupied one side.

Old furniture covered the other.

But at the far end was a blue-painted door.

Eleanor stopped breathing.

“That's it.””

Daniel approached.

A small digital keypad had been installed beside the handle.

He examined it.

“Do you have the access code?””

Victoria looked away.

“I don't remember.””

Daniel turned toward the investigator.

“Photograph everything.””

The investigator began documenting the keypad and door.

Victoria stood behind them.

“You're wasting your time.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

“Sarah was obsessed with recording everything. She thought everyone was against her.””

“Was she wrong?””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“Sarah was emotionally unstable.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“That's a lie.””

Victoria pointed at her.

“You don't know what happened in this family.””

“I know Sarah was afraid of you.””

Victoria's voice rose.

“She was my daughter!””

“And you made her feel like she had to hide from you!””

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then the investigator discovered a small metal plate beneath the keypad.

He examined it.

“There's an emergency access port.””

Daniel nodded.

“Can it be opened?””

“With the right equipment.””

Victoria suddenly moved toward the door.

“Don't touch that!””

The investigator stepped back.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why shouldn't we?””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“Because my daughter kept things in there that were private.””

“Private things don't require a hidden security room.””

Victoria turned away.

Daniel instructed the investigator to proceed according to the court order.

After twenty minutes, the keypad released a quiet electronic click.

The blue door opened.

Inside was a small office.

The walls were painted pale blue.

A desk stood beneath a narrow window.

Several filing cabinets lined one side.

A computer sat on the desk, its screen dark.

And above it, a row of small security monitors displayed different parts of the house.

The kitchen.

The front entrance.

The upstairs hallway.

The garage.

Daniel stepped inside.

“This is a surveillance room.””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“Sarah showed me those cameras once. She said she wanted to know who was coming into the house.””

Daniel approached the desk.

There were two framed photographs.

One showed Sarah holding Emily as a baby.

The other showed Sarah and Michael at their wedding.

Beside the photographs sat a small notebook.

Daniel opened it carefully.

The first page contained a handwritten list of dates.

The second page contained names.

Victoria Hayes.

James Harris.

Richard Palmer.

Daniel read the last name twice.

Richard Palmer was Victoria's current attorney.

He looked toward the doorway.

Victoria was standing motionless.

“Mrs. Hayes, why is your attorney's name in this notebook?””

She said nothing.

Daniel turned another page.

Sarah had written:

They are all connected. I need proof before I tell Michael.

Below that:

Harris says the missing transfers are a civil matter. Richard says I should sign the trust documents. Mother says Emily will never see her father again if I refuse.

Daniel felt a chill move through him.

This wasn't simply a financial disagreement.

Sarah had believed that three people were working together to control her inheritance and separate her from her husband.

The investigator examined the computer.

“It's connected to an internal recording system.””

“Can you access it?””

“Possibly. But we need to preserve the drive first.””

Daniel nodded.

“Do that.””

Eleanor approached the desk.

She noticed a small wooden box tucked beneath it.

“Sarah kept something there.””

Daniel looked down.

The box was locked.

A tiny silver key was attached to the bottom with tape.

The investigator documented the box before opening it.

Inside were several photographs, a second notebook, and a folded sheet of paper.

Daniel unfolded it.

It was a handwritten statement.

The first sentence made his stomach tighten.

On the night I die, the person who enters this room will know exactly what happened to me.

Below it was a list of instructions.

Sarah had written that the security system automatically backed up footage to a remote server whenever someone attempted to delete or alter a recording.

She had also written down the name of the company that managed the backup.

Daniel immediately took a photograph of the page.

Then he looked at the investigator.

“Can we access that remote server?””

“Not without the company and the proper legal authorization.””

“Then we'll get it.””

A sudden noise came from the stairs.

Footsteps.

Richard Palmer appeared at the basement entrance.

“What is going on?””

Daniel straightened.

“Mr. Palmer. What are you doing here?””

Richard glanced inside the blue room.

His face changed.

“Victoria, you said this room was empty.””

Victoria stared at him.

“I never said that.””

Richard looked at the computer.

Then at the notebooks.

He turned toward Daniel.

“This is privileged material.””

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“Privileged between whom?””

Richard swallowed.

“Between Sarah and her legal representatives.””

Daniel looked at the handwritten list.

“Were you Sarah's attorney?””

Richard didn't answer.

Eleanor shook her head.

“No. Sarah told me she never trusted him.””

Richard's voice became defensive.

“I'm leaving.””

Daniel stepped aside.

“Of course.””

But as Richard climbed the stairs, something slipped from his jacket pocket.

A folded document landed on the basement floor.

The investigator picked it up.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Richard Palmer.

The recipient was Detective James Harris.

The date was four days before Sarah died.

Daniel read the subject line.

*RE: Carter Investigation — Final Arrangement.*

His eyes moved down to the message.

Once Sarah signs the revised trust agreement, the problem disappears. If she refuses, we proceed with the alternative plan. Victoria has agreed to handle the family side. Make sure Michael is the only suspect when the police arrive.

Daniel stopped breathing.

He looked toward Richard.

“Mr. Palmer?””

Richard froze on the stairs.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel held up the paper.

Richard stared at it.

Then, without saying another word, he turned and ran.

The investigator immediately followed.

Daniel remained in the blue room, holding the email.

Victoria had gone completely pale.

“Mrs. Hayes,” Daniel said quietly, “what was the alternative plan?””

She stared at him.

Her mouth opened.

Then a whisper escaped.

“They weren't supposed to kill her.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“Who?””

Victoria began crying.

And just as the investigator returned to the doorway, he delivered the news that made the entire investigation take a darker turn.

“Mr. Brooks, the computer has an active remote connection.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

A message was blinking.

*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.*

Someone was inside Sarah's security system.

And whoever it was had just started deleting the backups.
