Chapter 2: The Lie Behind Her Eyes

I had faced armed men in foreign countries without feeling the kind of fear that settled over me in my own living room.

At least in combat, you knew where the danger was coming from.

Here, I stood barefoot on the rug, still wearing my travel clothes, holding my daughter while my wife looked at another man for permission to speak.

“Put the baby down,” Emily said.

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because we need to talk.””

“I'm holding my daughter. We can talk right here.””

Ryan cleared his throat.

“Daniel, I really should leave.””

I turned toward him.

“You've been in my house for months, and my wife can't explain why. You can spare another five minutes.””

His jaw tightened.

“I came here to do a job.””

“Then answer a simple question. How well do you know my wife?””

“Daniel!”” Emily snapped.

The sudden sharpness of her voice made Lily startle. Her little face crumpled, and she began to cry.

I immediately looked down, rocking her gently.

“It's okay, sweetheart. Daddy's got you.””

The words came naturally, but the irony nearly suffocated me.

I was speaking to a baby who might not be mine while trying to comfort her.

Emily reached for Lily.

“Give her to me.””

“Why?””

“Because you're upsetting her.””

“I'm upsetting her?”” I asked.

“I've been home for less than ten minutes. You haven't explained anything, and every time I ask a question, you look at him.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Please don't do this.””

“Don't do what? Ask who the man in our kitchen is?””

Ryan moved toward the front door.

“I don't want any trouble. I'll come back another day for my tools.””

“You're not coming back until I understand what's happening,” I said.

He stopped again.

For the first time, irritation replaced his uneasiness.

“Look, Sergeant, I understand you've just come home. You've been away a long time. But whatever you're imagining, you don't know the whole story.””

My fingers tightened around Lily's blanket.

“Then tell me the whole story.””

Ryan looked at Emily.

She shook her head almost imperceptibly.

I saw it.

So did he.

And that tiny exchange told me more than either of them had said aloud.

I carefully handed Lily to Emily, then stepped away before I did something stupid.

“Fine,” I said.

“Let's start with the truth. When did you meet Ryan?””

Emily hugged the baby against her chest.

“About four months ago.””

“Four months ago?””

“Yes.””

“While I was overseas?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“And you never mentioned him.””

“I told you about the repairs.””

“You told me about a leaking sink. You didn't tell me a man had been coming into our home for four months.””

“Because I knew you'd react like this!””

“Like what? Like a husband who wants to know why a stranger knows his name before he's even introduced himself?””

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck.

“I asked Emily about you when I saw the family photographs.””

“What photographs?””

“The ones on the hallway table,” he replied.

“You were in uniform.””

I remembered those photographs. One showed Emily and me on our wedding day. Another showed me in my dress uniform at my brother's graduation.

Ryan had looked at them.

He knew what I looked like.

He had known I was coming home eventually.

Suddenly, his greeting seemed less innocent.

I turned back to Emily.

“Did he know I was coming home today?””

She didn't answer.

“Emily.””

“I didn't tell him the exact date.””

“But you told him I was coming home.””

“Of course I did! I was excited!””

Her voice cracked.

For a moment, I saw the woman who had cried when we said goodbye at the airport, who had clung to me in the parking lot and whispered that she didn't know how she'd manage without me.

I wanted to believe that woman was still standing in front of me.

I wanted to believe exhaustion and fear were making me see things that weren't there.

But then Ryan spoke.

“Daniel, I think you should hear what happened before you jump to conclusions.””

Emily spun toward him.

“Ryan, don't.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You told me you were going to tell him.””

“Not like this!””

“Then when?”” Ryan asked.

“After another six months? Another year?””

The room fell silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

“What exactly were you going to tell me?””

Emily pressed her lips together.

Ryan took a breath.

“I've been helping your wife with more than repairs.””

I stepped toward him.

“What does that mean?””

“Daniel, stop!”” Emily cried.

Ryan raised both hands.

“I mean she's been struggling. She had a difficult pregnancy. She was alone most of the time. I helped with groceries, the nursery, appointments when she couldn't drive.””

I looked at Emily.

“You told me your sister took you to your appointments.””

“She did,” Emily whispered.

“Then why was he there?””

“Because my sister couldn't always come!””

I rubbed my face.

There were perfectly reasonable explanations for all of this. People helped one another. Contractors entered homes. Pregnant women needed support when their husbands were deployed.

I knew that.

What I couldn't explain was why my wife looked as if she were waiting for a bomb to go off.

I sat on the edge of the sofa.

“Emily, look at me.””

She stared at the floor.

“Please.””

Slowly, she lifted her eyes.

“Is Lily mine?””

The question seemed to drain every sound from the room.

Even Ryan stopped moving.

Emily's face crumpled.

“How could you ask me that?””

“Because she doesn't look like either of us, because you can barely look at me, and because another man has been helping you in secret for months.””

“She's our daughter!””

“Then why can't you say it without looking terrified?””

Emily started crying.

Not the quiet tears she'd shed at our wedding when I promised to love her forever. This was a desperate, breathless sob, as if she had been holding something inside for so long that she could no longer contain it.

I stood.

“Emily, did you have an affair?””

“No!””

“Did you sleep with him?””

“No!””

The answers came quickly, but her eyes flicked toward Ryan again.

He looked away.

My chest tightened.

“Then explain the resemblance.””

Emily shook her head.

“I can't do this right now.””

“You can't?””

“I just had a baby, Daniel! I've barely slept in weeks! You walk through the door and start accusing me of cheating!””

“I walked through the door wanting to hold my daughter!””

“And now you're questioning whether she's yours!””

“Because you're giving me reasons to question it!””

Lily cried louder.

Emily turned away, whispering to the baby while tears ran down her cheeks.

For a moment, I hated myself.

I'd imagined this homecoming so many times. I'd imagined laughing, taking pictures, ordering food, and spending the entire night watching my daughter sleep.

Instead, I was standing in a room full of accusations, watching my wife fall apart.

I lowered my voice.

“I'm not trying to hurt you. I need to understand.””

Emily wiped her face with her sleeve.

“You don't understand what it's been like.””

“Then help me understand.””

She looked at me, and something in her expression changed.

It wasn't guilt exactly.

It was fear.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “if I tell you everything, you have to promise me you'll listen until I'm finished.””

I stared at her.

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“Even if you hate me afterward.””

I felt cold all over.

“Emily, what did you do?””

She opened her mouth.

Ryan suddenly stepped between us.

“Wait.””

I turned on him.

“You've said enough.””

“No, you need to hear this from someone who isn't trying to protect herself.””

Emily recoiled as if he'd struck her.

“Get out,” she whispered.

Ryan stared at her.

“What?””

“Get out of my house.””

He shook his head.

“You can't keep pretending this is going to disappear.””

“Leave!””

He grabbed his toolbox and headed toward the door. Before stepping outside, he looked back at me.

“Ask your wife about the hospital,” he said.

Then he left.

The door clicked shut.

I stood motionless.

The hospital.

I turned toward Emily.

“What happened at the hospital?””

She held Lily so tightly that the baby's blanket bunched beneath her chin.

“Nothing,” she whispered.

“Ryan just told me to ask you about the hospital.””

“He doesn't know what he's talking about.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Emily shook her head.

I took one slow step toward her.

“Did something happen to Lily?””

“No!””

“Was she sick?””

“No!””

“Then what are you hiding?””

Emily looked down at our daughter.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she walked to the coffee table, reached beneath a stack of unopened mail, and pulled out a folded document.

Her fingers trembled as she handed it to me.

“I never wanted you to find out this way,” she whispered.

I unfolded the paper.

At the top was the name of the hospital where Lily had been born.

Below it were several lines of printed medical information, followed by a handwritten note.

I read the first paragraph.

Then I read it again.

My eyes moved to the date.

The date Lily was born.

And beside it, in dark blue ink, someone had written three words that made my knees feel weak.

*PATERNITY UNCONFIRMED. REPEAT.*

I looked up.

Emily was crying silently.

“Why does Lily's hospital record say her paternity is unconfirmed?””

She pressed her hand over her mouth.

May you like

Then she whispered something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Because the hospital made a mistake before Lily was even born.””
