Chapter 8: The Name Buried in My Father’s Files

I met Miriam at the company archive before sunrise.

She was standing beside a table covered in documents.

Her expression told me everything.

This was bigger than Daniel.

“What did you find?””

She handed me a file.

“Bank records.””

I opened it.

Transfers.

Payments.

Companies I didn’t recognize.

Then one name appeared.

My hands stopped.

*Robert Whitmore.*

I looked up.

“No.””

Miriam nodded.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He received payments from a company connected to Daniel.””

I stared at the documents.

My uncle.

My father’s brother.

The man who gave me the letter.

The man who warned me.

The man I trusted.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

The betrayal felt different.

Daniel betrayed my marriage.

Robert betrayed my family.

My father’s memory.

“Why?””

Miriam opened another file.

“Because your father cut him out of the company.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Robert tried to sell company secrets.””

I closed my eyes.

Everything suddenly connected.

Robert didn’t come back to help me.

He came back because he needed access.

He needed me to trust him.

And Daniel needed him.

Two men.

Two betrayals.

One plan.

Robert called me before I could call him.

Of course he did.

People like him always knew when the ground moved beneath them.

“Claire.””

I answered.

“Why?””

Silence.

Then:

“You found it.””

I laughed quietly.

“You knew I would.””

“I wanted to explain.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more explanations.””

“Claire, your father was unfair.””

There it was.

The excuse.

“I built that company with him.””

“You helped him.””

“Yes.””

“But he left everything to me.””

His voice hardened.

“Because he thought you were better.””

I froze.

For a moment, I heard the pain behind his anger.

Then I understood.

This was never about money.

It was jealousy.

A wound that turned into poison.

“You hated him.””

“I deserved what he had.””

“No.””

I looked at the documents.

“You wanted what he had.””

A long silence.

Then Robert said:

“Daniel was never supposed to be your enemy.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He was supposed to be the distraction.””

My blood turned cold.

“What are you saying?””

Robert laughed softly.

A sound that no longer belonged to family.

“It was never about Daniel taking the company.””

I stood.

“Then what was it about?””

His answer came quietly.

“It was about making you give it away.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

My entire body felt frozen.

Because suddenly every piece moved into place.

Daniel didn’t need to defeat me.

He needed to make me afraid.

Make me angry.

Make me act emotionally.

And Robert had designed the legal trap.

My father’s own brother.

That evening, I returned to Whitmore Dynamics.

The building was nearly empty.

I walked into my father’s old office.

The place where he made every important decision.

I touched the desk.

“I’m sorry.””

Not to Daniel.

Not to Robert.

To my father.

Because I finally understood why he had been so careful.

He knew people would come for what he built.

He knew love could blind me.

He knew trust could become a weapon.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

*You know now, don’t you?*

I stared.

Another message appeared.

*Robert told you everything.*

Then:

*Meet me tomorrow. Alone.*

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then the final message arrived.

A photo.

My father’s original will.

And beneath it, a handwritten note.

Not the one I had seen.

A different one.

A note I had never known existed.

The message beneath the photo said:

*Your father left one final instruction.*

I zoomed in.

My heart stopped.

Because the handwriting was my father’s.

May you like

And the first line said:

*If Claire discovers the truth about Daniel, she must never trust Robert.*
