Chapter 5: The Secret in Storage Unit 214
I didn't sleep that night.
Ethan slept in my room with the bedroom door open. Grandma Rose stayed in the guest room beside his.
I sat at the kitchen table until nearly four in the morning, staring at the photograph of the bank transfers.
Twelve transactions.
Eight hundred dollars.
All taken from the money I had deposited for my son's school meals.
At six, Rose brought me coffee.
"Have you decided what you're going to do?""
I rubbed my eyes.
"I'm going to find out who Lily is.""
Rose sat opposite me.
"Be careful, Daniel. Emily has been hiding something for a long time.""
"I know.""
"And don't let your anger make you forget Ethan.""
I looked toward the stairs.
"He's the only thing I'm thinking about.""
At seven, Ethan came downstairs wearing his pajamas.
He had a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
"Morning, Dad.""
I smiled.
"Morning, buddy.""
He looked at the breakfast table.
There were pancakes, eggs, toast, and a bowl of strawberries.
He hesitated.
"Can I have some?""
I pulled out the chair.
"You can have as much as you want.""
He sat down.
Rose placed a pancake on his plate.
"With extra strawberries.""
Ethan smiled.
"Thanks, Grandma.""
He ate slowly.
I noticed he kept glancing at the doorway.
"Are you worried about Mom?""
He nodded.
"Is she still mad?""
I put my coffee down.
"Your mother and I have some things to work out. But you don't need to worry about making either of us happy. That's not your job.""
He considered that.
Then he asked, "Can I stay with Grandma today?""
Rose reached for his hand.
"Of course.""
I kissed the top of his head.
"I'll take you there after your appointment.""
His shoulders relaxed.
For the first time in months, he finished breakfast without looking toward the kitchen door.
At nine, I met Vanessa outside a small coffee shop three miles from our house.
She was already waiting when I arrived.
Her eyes were swollen.
She wore sunglasses despite the cloudy weather.
I sat across from her.
"Start talking.""
She wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.
"Emily has another daughter. Her name is Lily. She's eight.""
"Why didn't I know?""
"Because Emily gave her up for adoption when she was a baby.""
I leaned back.
"Adoption?""
Vanessa nodded.
"After Lily was born, Emily was in a difficult situation. Her relationship with Lily's father collapsed. She couldn't manage everything financially, and her parents refused to help. A family friend arranged a private adoption.""
I listened.
"Then why is she taking Ethan's lunch money?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because Lily came back into her life.""
"What do you mean?""
"Her adoptive parents died in a car accident last year. Lily went to live with her aunt, but that arrangement fell apart. Emily found out and started trying to get custody.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She was afraid you'd say no.""
"To helping a little girl?""
"To bringing another child into the house.""
I shook my head.
"I would have wanted to discuss it. That's not the same as saying no.""
Vanessa nodded.
"She knows.""
"Then why steal from Ethan?""
"She needed money for lawyers, school fees, and other expenses. She said Ethan wouldn't notice.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"She was taking money from his lunch account while telling him he didn't deserve to eat.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I know.""
"No, I don't think you do.""
She looked up.
"I tried to tell her to stop.""
"When?""
"Two weeks ago.""
"What did she say?""
"She said Ethan was spoiled and didn't need all that money. She said she was only borrowing it.""
"Did you give it back?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Some of it.""
"Where is the rest?""
She hesitated.
"Storage Unit 214.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Emily keeps documents and personal belongings there. The money was transferred to an account connected to that unit. She told me she had a box with Lily's adoption papers and other documents.""
I leaned forward.
"Why would money be connected to a storage unit?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Because she was hiding more than adoption papers.""
She reached into her purse and pulled out a folded receipt.
It was for a storage facility on the outskirts of town.
Unit 214.
The account holder was Emily Carter.
"What's inside?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know everything. But I saw a folder with your name on it.""
My pulse quickened.
"My name?""
"Yes.""
"What was in it?""
"Bank statements. Insurance papers. Copies of your signature.""
I stared at her.
"Why would Emily have copies of my signature?""
Vanessa looked terrified.
"Daniel, I think she has been using your identity to apply for financial assistance for Lily.""
I sat back.
The room seemed to grow colder.
"You're telling me she forged my signature?""
"I don't know if she forged it. But I saw documents with your name and a signature that looked like yours.""
I took a photograph of the receipt.
Then I stood.
"You're coming with me.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Emily will know.""
"She already knows I'm asking questions.""
I called a lawyer friend and explained the situation. He advised me not to enter the storage unit or remove anything without the appropriate authorization.
He also recommended that I preserve all documents and contact the relevant financial institutions about the suspicious transactions.
I followed his advice.
At eleven thirty, I arrived at the storage facility with Vanessa.
A manager met us at the office.
I explained that I was concerned about possible financial fraud and asked whether there was a lawful way to document the contents of a unit without violating the account holder's rights.
The manager checked the records.
"Only the registered renter can authorize access," he said.
Vanessa looked at me.
"Emily has a spare key.""
I shook my head.
"We're not breaking in.""
I called Emily.
She didn't answer.
I tried again.
This time, she picked up.
"What?""
"I need to speak to you about Lily.""
Silence.
Then she said, "Where are you?""
"Storage Unit 214.""
Her breathing changed.
"Don't touch anything.""
"I haven't.""
"Leave.""
"Come here and explain what's inside.""
"I said leave!""
"Emily, I know about the money.""
She hung up.
Twenty minutes later, her car pulled into the facility.
She stepped out wearing dark sunglasses and a beige coat.
When she saw Vanessa, she stopped.
"You betrayed me.""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I told him because he deserves the truth.""
Emily approached me.
"You have no right to be here.""
"Then explain the documents with my name on them.""
She looked toward the manager.
"This is a private matter.""
I handed her the receipt.
"Open the unit.""
She snatched it from my hand.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she pulled the silver key from her handbag.
The manager verified her identity and opened the unit according to facility procedure.
The metal door rolled upward.
Inside were cardboard boxes, plastic storage containers, an old suitcase, and several filing cabinets.
Emily walked straight toward the second cabinet.
She opened it and removed a thick folder.
"Here," she said, throwing it toward me.
"Everything is about Lily. Nothing concerns you.""
I opened the folder.
The first document was an application for financial assistance.
My name appeared as a co-applicant.
My signature was at the bottom.
I stared at it.
I had never signed that document.
The next page was a bank authorization form.
Then another.
And another.
Several applications listed our home as the residence of two children.
One child was Ethan.
The other was Lily.
But the dates were from before I had even met Lily.
I looked at Emily.
"Why are you listing me as a financial sponsor without telling me?""
"Because you would have helped.""
"That isn't an answer.""
She folded her arms.
"You have a good salary. Lily needed a stable home.""
"Then why did you forge my signature?""
"I didn't forge anything!""
I held up the application.
"This isn't my signature.""
"Maybe you signed it and forgot.""
I stared at her.
"You're lying.""
She looked away.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Emily, tell him about the insurance.""
My wife turned sharply.
"Shut up.""
I opened the next folder.
Inside were insurance documents.
One named Ethan as the beneficiary of a policy.
Another showed that the beneficiary had been changed.
The new beneficiary was Lily.
I read the document twice.
The policy was worth $250,000.
My name appeared as the policyholder.
And the change had been processed six weeks earlier.
I looked at Emily.
"Did you change my son's life insurance beneficiary?""
She started crying.
"I was trying to protect Lily.""
"You removed Ethan from his policy?""
"She has nobody!""
"Ethan is twelve years old. He has been your son since he was born!""
"He has you!""
The words came out so quickly that she seemed to surprise herself.
I stepped back.
"Say that again.""
Emily wiped her cheeks.
"He has you, Daniel. He has your mother. He has a whole family. Lily has no one.""
"So you decided to take from him?""
"I was trying to make things fair.""
"By stealing his money? By changing his insurance? By withholding food?""
She looked at the floor.
"I didn't think you'd understand.""
I closed the folder.
"You're right. I don't understand.""
For several seconds, the only sound was the humming of the storage facility's ventilation system.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"There's something else.""
Emily spun toward her.
"Don't.""
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"You told me the money was for Lily's lawyer. But it wasn't all for the lawyer.""
I turned.
"What else?""
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
She opened a message thread and handed it to me.
It was a conversation between the sisters.
One message from Emily read:
Once Daniel signs the new custody papers, Ethan will be sent to boarding school. Then we can bring Lily home without complications.
I read it again.
Boarding school?
I scrolled.
Another message:
He'll get over it. He's always been too attached to Daniel anyway.
My chest tightened.
I looked at Emily.
"You planned to send Ethan away?""
She shook her head.
"That was only an idea.""
"You were going to separate him from me?""
"I needed space to raise Lily.""
I couldn't speak.
The woman I had trusted to protect my child had been planning to remove him from his home while taking his money and changing his insurance.
And she had convinced him that I didn't love him.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you know about this?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I knew she wanted to bring Lily home. I didn't know she was going to take Ethan away.""
"Did you help her prepare the papers?""
She nodded.
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Then you helped her hurt him.""
Vanessa lowered her head.
I took photographs of the documents and contacted my lawyer.
Emily stood motionless.
Finally, she whispered, "Daniel, please. I was desperate.""
I looked at her.
"Where is Lily now?""
"With a temporary foster family.""
"Does she know what's happening?""
Emily nodded.
"She thinks she's coming home soon.""
I took a deep breath.
"Then we need to make sure she is safe too. But that doesn't mean Ethan has to suffer for it.""
Emily's face crumpled.
"He's not suffering!""
I looked at her.
"He's afraid to ask for breakfast.""
She began crying harder.
But I had no sympathy left for excuses.
I walked toward the exit.
Vanessa followed.
Before I reached the car, Emily called after me.
"Daniel!""
I stopped.
She was holding one final document.
It was a custody petition.
My name was listed as the respondent.
And at the bottom was a date.
The hearing was scheduled for the following Monday.
I turned around.
"What is this?""
Emily's voice was barely audible.
"I was going to file it after I got the other papers signed.""
"What papers?""
She swallowed.
"The agreement that says you're no longer responsible for Ethan.""
My hands went cold.
May you like
Then she said:
"Daniel, you need to understand something. Lily's adoption case isn't the only reason I did this. Ethan's biological father has been looking for him.""
