Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Lie

"Marcus, don't let her do this to me!""

Vanessa's voice rang through the study as she pointed at Grace.

"She's trying to destroy our marriage because she's always been loyal to your father!""

Grace stood motionless.

"I have never asked Mr. Marcus to leave you. I have only shown him what the cameras recorded.""

Vanessa turned toward her husband.

"You're going to believe a housekeeper over your own wife?""

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

"Yesterday, I would have believed you without asking a single question.""

He glanced at the folder on his desk.

"Today, I'm asking questions.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"You're humiliating me.""

"No," Marcus replied.

"I'm trying to understand what you've done.""

She stared at him, then lowered her voice.

"Can we talk alone?""

"No.""

"Marcus, please. This is between us.""

He shook his head.

"You made it everyone's business when you accused my father of assaulting you.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

For an instant, all the carefully arranged softness disappeared from her face.

"You have no idea what your father is capable of.""

Robert sat quietly in his chair.

"I have spent my entire life trying to give you a good life, Vanessa. If you believe I've wronged you, tell us how.""

She looked at him.

"You want me to say it in front of everyone?""

"Yes.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Fine. You never wanted me in this family. You smiled at our wedding, but you never trusted me. Every time I suggested something, you treated me like I was trying to steal from you.""

Robert considered her words.

"I asked questions when you proposed using company money for personal renovations. I asked questions when you wanted access to accounts you weren't authorized to manage. And I asked questions when you told Marcus that his business should be transferred into a trust you would control.""

Marcus turned sharply.

"What?""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Robert looked at his son.

"I didn't want to interfere in your marriage, so I never told you the full extent of our disagreements.""

Marcus stared at his father.

"You let me believe she was only asking you to move out.""

"I hoped the situation would resolve itself without destroying your relationship.""

"And she used that silence against you.""

Robert lowered his eyes.

"Yes.""

Vanessa shook her head furiously.

"This is unbelievable. You two are rewriting history because you need someone to blame!""

Marcus pulled out a chair.

"Sit down.""

"I won't be interrogated in my own home.""

"Then stop treating every question like an attack.""

Vanessa remained standing.

For a moment, Marcus thought she might leave.

Instead, she sat.

He opened the folder containing the suspicious power of attorney.

"Did you submit this document?""

"No.""

"Did you ask anyone to submit it for you?""

"No.""

"Have you ever contacted a bank, attorney, or financial institution about gaining access to Dad's trust?""

Vanessa hesitated.

That tiny pause was enough to change the atmosphere.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Think carefully before you answer.""

She pressed her lips together.

"I asked a lawyer what would happen if your father became incapacitated.""

Robert's eyebrows rose.

"Why?""

"Because he is seventy years old! Because people get sick! Because someone has to make decisions if he can't.""

"That is a reasonable question in itself," Robert replied.

"But why did you do it without telling Marcus?""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Because you would have stopped me!""

"Stopped you from doing what?""

She didn't answer.

Marcus closed the folder.

"Grace, would you please give us a moment? Stay nearby.""

"Of course, sir.""

Grace left the study, closing the door behind her.

Marcus remained seated across from his wife.

For the first time, there were no witnesses, no cameras playing footage, and no one to blame for what she might say next.

He looked at her stomach.

"Our baby is going to be born into this family," he said quietly.

"I need to know whether the woman I'm raising this child with has been trying to steal from my father.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I never wanted to hurt you.""

"That isn't an answer.""

"I wanted security.""

"We have security. We have more money than we could ever reasonably spend.""

"Not if your father decides to take everything away!""

Marcus stared at her.

"Take what away? The house? The company? The money you never earned?""

Vanessa recoiled.

"How dare you?""

"How dare I ask?""

His voice rose.

"You accused an innocent man of pushing you while you were pregnant. You watched me hit him. You let me drag him to the door.

Did you think about what that would do to me? To him? To our child?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"I didn't think you'd actually hit him.""

"But you knew I'd believe you.""

She looked away.

Marcus leaned back.

That was the truth he had been afraid to hear.

She had understood his love for her well enough to weaponize it.

"Tell me about the transfer," he said.

Vanessa was silent for nearly a minute.

Then she spoke.

"A man contacted me about the family trust.""

"What man?""

"His name is Daniel Cross. He said he worked with people who helped families organize their estates.""

Marcus frowned.

"Daniel Cross?""

The name sounded familiar, but he couldn't place it.

"What did he offer you?""

Vanessa twisted her wedding ring.

"He said the trust was outdated. He said that if your father became unable to manage his affairs, the family could lose control of certain assets unless someone acted quickly.""

"And you believed him?""

"He showed me documents.""

"What documents?""

"I don't have them.""

"Where are they?""

She looked toward the window.

"I sent them to him.""

Marcus's blood ran cold.

"Sent them how?""

"Email.""

"Using which account?""

"My personal email.""

He closed his eyes.

Someone outside the family had apparently obtained information about the trust, and Vanessa had been communicating with him in secret.

"What did Daniel want in return?""

Vanessa's silence stretched.

Then she whispered, "He said I could receive a share of the estate if I helped arrange the paperwork.""

Marcus stared at her.

"How much?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Guess.""

"Two million dollars.""

The room seemed to tilt.

Two million dollars.

Marcus had spent years believing that the greatest danger to his marriage was his father's unwillingness to let go.

Instead, his wife had been negotiating a private deal involving the man who raised him.

"Did you sign anything?""

"No.""

"Did you give him my father's signature?""

"No!""

"Did you send him the power of attorney?""

Vanessa looked horrified.

"I never sent him that document!""

Marcus studied her face.

For the first time, he believed she might be telling part of the truth.

But part of the truth was not enough.

"Then who created it?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Marcus stood and walked to the window.

Outside, the gardeners were trimming the hedges, unaware that the family inside the mansion was coming apart.

He remembered his father teaching him how to ride a bicycle on the same driveway.

He remembered Robert standing in the rain after Marcus's first business collapsed, refusing to leave until his son agreed to come home.

He remembered the blood on his father's mouth.

And he remembered the way Robert had looked at him when he said he should have learned when to stop letting his father control his life.

Marcus had wanted to be a good husband.

Instead, he had become the weapon Vanessa used against his father.

"Who is Daniel Cross?"" he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"He said he had worked with private investment groups.""

"Did you meet him?""

"Once.""

"Where?""

"At a hotel downtown.""

Marcus turned around.

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

The timing matched the suspicious request for information about the trust.

"Did you tell him about the amendment?""

Vanessa's expression faltered.

"He told me about it.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

"He said your father was planning to change the trust. He knew about the charitable foundation. He knew about the safeguards.""

Marcus felt a chill spread through his chest.

Those details had been confidential.

Only Robert, the attorney preparing the amendment, and a small number of authorized advisers should have known them.

"How could Daniel know about that?""

"I don't know.""

Marcus looked toward the door.

"Grace!""

The housekeeper entered almost immediately.

"Yes, sir?""

"Please contact our attorney. Tell him we need an urgent review of the suspicious power of attorney and every request made about Dad's trust.""

Grace nodded.

"And ask him to preserve all relevant records. Nothing should be changed or destroyed.""

"Yes, sir.""

Marcus hesitated.

"Also, please ask the security company to preserve the original recordings. We need the unedited files.""

Grace left.

Vanessa stood slowly.

"Marcus, please. You can't report this without thinking about our baby.""

He turned toward her.

"Our baby is exactly why I have to think.""

"Do you want our child to grow up with a mother who has been dragged through court?""

"Did you think about that when you lied about Dad?""

She began crying again.

"I made a mistake.""

Marcus looked at her.

"A mistake is forgetting an appointment. A mistake is saying something cruel when you're angry. You planned this.

You prepared for it. You used my love for you to make me hurt the person who loves me most.""

He paused.

"And I let you.""

For the first time, he did not place all the blame on her.

He had chosen to strike his father.

He had chosen to ignore the evidence in front of him.

Whatever Vanessa had done, Marcus could not escape his own responsibility.

"I won't make any decisions about our marriage today," he said.

"But you will not have access to Dad's private documents or financial accounts. Our attorneys will handle everything from here.""

Vanessa looked at him with disbelief.

"You're taking everything away from me.""

"No. I'm putting boundaries where there should have been boundaries all along.""

She backed toward the door.

Then she stopped.

"You think Daniel is the only person who knows about that trust?""

Marcus stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa's hand moved to her stomach.

Her voice dropped.

"He told me that if the first plan failed, he already had another way to get the money.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"What other way?""

She looked at him, her eyes suddenly wide with fear.

"I don't know the details. I swear. But he said there was someone inside the company helping him.""

Marcus's mind raced through the names of executives, advisers, and trustees.

Someone inside Bennett Holdings had helped an outsider obtain confidential information.

Someone had prepared or submitted a suspicious power of attorney.

And someone had been waiting for Robert to be pushed out of his own home.

Before Marcus could ask another question, his phone rang.

The caller was Bennett Holdings' general counsel.

He answered immediately.

"Tell me you found something.""

The lawyer's voice was tense.

"Marcus, we checked the document you sent. The power of attorney is not merely suspicious. It contains a signature that appears to have been copied from an older document.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

"Can you identify who submitted it?""

"We're tracing the request. But there's something else. The bank received a second inquiry this morning.""

"From whom?""

A pause.

Then the lawyer spoke.

"From someone claiming to represent you.""

Marcus went completely still.

"Who?""

"The inquiry used your name and a digital authorization linked to your business account.""

Marcus slowly looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at him.

Neither of them spoke.

Because if someone had impersonated Marcus to gain access to his father's trust, the plan was no longer simply about removing Robert from the mansion.

May you like

It was about taking control of the Bennett fortune.

And the person behind it might already be inside Marcus's company.
