Chapter 6: The Father Who Wanted the Children Back

Grant had always understood one thing.

Money could fix problems.

Reputation could hide mistakes.

But children were different.

Children created sympathy.

And Grant knew exactly how to use sympathy.

The hearing was scheduled within forty-eight hours.

Natalie spent the entire evening preparing.

“He’s going to present himself as the stable parent,” she explained.

I looked through the documents spread across the table.

“After bringing another woman into our home?””

“He’ll explain it differently.””

Of course he would.

Grant had spent years rewriting reality.

He would do it again.

The next morning, he arrived at court wearing a navy suit and a father’s expression.

Not a husband’s.

A father’s.

That was the image he wanted everyone to see.

When the judge entered, Grant sat straight.

Respectful.

Concerned.

Almost gentle.

I hated how familiar it was.

The same man who threatened to cancel my credit cards was now pretending to be reasonable.

His attorney spoke first.

“My client is concerned about the emotional stability of his wife after she abruptly removed the children from their home.””

I looked forward.

Removed.

Not protected.

Not left.

Removed.

Words mattered.

Natalie stood.

“My client left a home where her husband introduced his affair partner while their children were present.””

Grant’s attorney sighed dramatically.

“My client admits the situation was unfortunate.””

Unfortunate.

Like forgetting an umbrella.

Like missing an appointment.

Not destroying a family.

The judge looked at Grant.

“Mr. Whitmore, why did you believe this was an appropriate environment for your children?””

Grant lowered his eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost looked at Natalie.

He was using the apology.

The carefully designed apology.

“I was trying to handle a difficult situation.””

The judge remained expressionless.

“And your wife?””

Grant sighed.

“I’m worried she acted emotionally.””

There it was.

The attack.

The one he always used.

I was emotional.

I was unstable.

I couldn’t handle pressure.

Natalie stood.

“Your Honor, we have evidence contradicting that claim.””

She submitted the recordings.

Grant’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

He knew.

He knew exactly what we had.

The judge reviewed the materials.

Then looked up.

“Mr. Whitmore, is this your voice?””

Grant’s attorney leaned forward.

“We would like time to verify the authenticity.””

The judge nodded.

But the damage was done.

Because Grant wasn’t denying it.

After the hearing, he followed me into the hallway.

“Mara.””

I kept walking.

“Mara, wait.””

I stopped.

Not because he told me to.

Because I wanted to.

He stood several feet away.

For once, he looked smaller.

“You’re really doing this?””

I stared at him.

“You mean protecting myself?””

“You’re destroying everything.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You did that.””

His face hardened.

“You think you’re better than me now?””

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

“No.””

I said quietly.

“I think I finally see you.””

His expression changed.

Then he lowered his voice.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

A chill ran through me.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

He smiled faintly.

“It’s advice.””

Natalie stepped between us.

“Conversation over.””

Grant walked away.

But before he reached the elevator, his phone rang.

He answered.

I watched his face change.

Whatever he heard, he didn’t like.

He turned around.

His eyes landed on me.

And I knew.

Something had happened.

That night, Natalie called me.

“Mara, I found out why Grant is panicking.””

“What?””

She was quiet.

Then:

“Ethan turned himself in.””

I sat up.

“Where?””

“Charlotte police station.””

“Why?””

Natalie took a breath.

“He brought evidence.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What kind of evidence?””

“A recording.””

“Another one?””

“Yes.””

“What does it prove?””

Natalie’s voice lowered.

“It proves Grant planned everything months before he brought Tessa home.””

I closed my eyes.

Then she added:

“And Mara…”

“What?””

“The recording includes something about Owen.””

My body went cold.

“What about Owen?””

A pause.

May you like

Then Natalie said:

“You need to hear this yourself.””
