Chapter 9: The Last Lie Before the Truth

I stood in the middle of my living room, staring at the walls like they belonged to someone else.

A camera.

Someone had been watching us.

Watching Lily.

Watching me.

Watching every conversation I had inside the place where I thought my daughter was safe.

My hands started shaking.

“Marcus,” I said quietly.

“Find it.””

“We already did.””

The words made my stomach drop.

“What?””

“The device was hidden behind the bookshelf in your office.””

My office.

The place where I kept Sarah’s old photographs.

The place where I stored documents about my company.

The place where I had spent countless nights trying to rebuild my life.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Michael…”

I held up my hand.

“Not now.””

She stopped.

Because she knew.

This wasn’t about her anymore.

This was about finding out who had been controlling my life.

I walked into my office.

The bookshelf was still there.

Everything looked normal.

That was the terrifying part.

The worst things in life rarely announce themselves.

They hide quietly.

Behind walls.

Behind smiles.

Behind people you trust.

I moved the books aside.

There was a small hole in the wood.

A tiny piece of technology sat inside.

I stared at it.

Three years of my life.

Recorded.

Captured.

Possibly manipulated.

I felt sick.

My phone rang again.

Marcus.

“We traced some of the access records.””

“And?””

“There were several logins.””

“From where?””

He paused.

“Your company.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel.

Of course.

But Marcus continued.

“However, Daniel wasn’t the only one.””

My eyes opened.

“Who else?””

“Victor Hale.””

The room went silent.

I turned around.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“You said Victor only wanted company information.””

She looked down.

“I thought that was all.””

“You thought?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know how far it went.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But underneath it was something else.

Exhaustion.

I was tired of discovering new pieces of a nightmare.

A knock came at the door.

I froze.

Nobody knew we were there.

I looked through the window.

Daniel stood outside.

My first instinct was anger.

My second was something worse.

A memory.

The man who held my daughter when she was born.

The man who gave a speech at Sarah’s funeral.

The man I called my brother.

I opened the door.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“I know you found the camera.””

My jaw tightened.

“How?””

His expression told me everything.

“You were involved.””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

But it destroyed whatever hope I had left.

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Since before Sarah died.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“You helped them.””

“I was trapped.””

“You helped them.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You made choices.””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“You don’t get to act surprised.””

Her face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You think Victor only used you?””

Vanessa went still.

Daniel looked at me.

“He used everyone.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

Daniel walked inside slowly.

“Victor knew Sarah was investigating the company. He knew she had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Fraud. Illegal transfers. Money being moved through fake accounts.””

My hands curled into fists.

“And my company?””

“Was being used.””

I shook my head.

“I built that company.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You were supposed to protect it.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“Why?””

The question came out softer.

“Why would you do this?””

For the first time, Daniel looked completely broken.

“Because I was drowning.””

I said nothing.

“My daughter needed surgery.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Victor offered money.””

Vanessa whispered:

“He threatened you too.””

Daniel nodded.

“He said if I refused, he would expose everything. My debts. My mistakes.””

I stared at him.

“So you chose yourself.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Sarah found out.””

“Yes.””

“And she was going to expose you.””

“Yes.””

I waited.

“Did you kill her?””

Daniel looked at me.

The longest silence of my life followed.

Then he said:

“No.””

I almost believed him.

Almost.

“What happened?””

He took a shaky breath.

“Victor followed her.””

The room became cold.

“I tried to stop him.””

“When?””

“After Sarah left.””

“You followed her too.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I arrived after the crash.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why did you tell me you saw nothing?””

“Because Victor was there.””

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was standing beside Sarah’s car.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he help?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he remembered.

“He took something.””

“What?””

“The notebook.””

My breath caught.

“But Vanessa had it.””

Daniel looked at her.

“That wasn’t the original.””

Everyone went silent.

“What?””

Vanessa stepped back.

“I only had a copy.””

Daniel nodded.

“Sarah made copies because she knew someone close to her was dangerous.””

My mind raced.

The notebook.

The evidence.

The lies.

Then Daniel said the one thing that changed everything.

“Michael, Sarah didn’t die because she found Victor’s crime.””

He looked at me.

“She died because she found out who Victor was working for.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Toward Lily’s room.

Then he whispered:

“The person who has been pretending to protect you for three years.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

May you like

Daniel looked at me.

“Your wife’s father.””
