Chapter 5: The Mother Who Knew Too Much
The police took Thomas into a separate room for questioning.
He protested the entire way.
He demanded his lawyer, threatened to call the governor, and accused Emma of fabricating evidence.
But nobody listened.
Lily remained in the greenhouse with Emma, Arthur, and Victoria.
The rain had stopped.
Water dripped from the greenhouse roof, tapping against the glass like a slow clock.
Lily sat on a wooden chair, holding the photograph of the unfamiliar woman.
“Who is she?”” she asked.
Victoria stared at the picture.
For a long moment, she looked as though she couldn't breathe.
“Her name was Claire.””
“Was she Daddy's friend?””
Victoria shook her head.
“She was... someone very important.””
Emma pulled up another chair.
“Claire was my mother.””
Lily looked at her.
“Your mommy?””
“Yes.””
“Then why does Mommy know her?””
Emma looked at Victoria.
“That's what I've been trying to understand.””
Victoria lowered herself onto the bench.
“Because I knew Claire before I married Daniel.””
The answer left Lily confused.
“Were you friends?””
“No.””
Victoria rubbed her forehead.
“We were both in Daniel's life. But our lives were very different.””
Emma folded her arms.
“Tell her everything.””
Victoria looked toward the officers' voices coming from the mansion.
Then she began.
“Daniel met Claire when he was twenty-four. He was working for his father's company, and she was studying architecture. They fell in love very quickly.””
Emma looked down.
“My mother told me about him.””
Victoria continued.
“They had Emma. For a while, they were happy. But Daniel's father disapproved of the relationship. He wanted Daniel to marry someone from another wealthy family.””
Lily glanced at the photograph.
“Was that you?””
Victoria nodded.
“My family owned several properties. Our marriage would have helped merge two companies.””
Emma's voice sharpened.
“So you knew he had a daughter when you married him.””
“Yes.””
“And you accepted it?””
Victoria's eyes filled.
“I thought I could.””
Emma laughed bitterly.
“You thought you could erase us.””
“No. Thomas convinced Daniel that keeping Emma's existence private would protect the company. He told us the press would destroy everything if the public found out about Daniel's previous relationship.””
Emma stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
Victoria didn't answer.
Arthur leaned forward.
“Thomas was already controlling the company's public relations at that point.””
Victoria nodded.
“He convinced Daniel to sign an agreement. Emma would remain with Claire, and Daniel would provide financial support privately.””
Emma's hands trembled.
“My mother never received what he promised.””
Victoria looked at her.
“I know.””
“Then why didn't you help?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Emma stood.
“You were afraid of losing a rich husband, so you let a little girl lose her father?””
Victoria began crying.
“I know what I did.””
“No, you don't.””
Emma's voice broke.
“My mother waited years for Daniel to come back. Every birthday, she told me he was busy. Every Christmas, she said he had sent a gift. Sometimes the gifts were from her own money because she couldn't afford to let me know he'd forgotten.””
Lily looked at the photograph again.
“Did Daddy forget you?””
Emma shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. He didn't.””
She took out a small silver pendant.
Inside was a tiny photograph of Daniel and Emma together.
“He found me again when I was fourteen. He came to my school. He waited outside in the rain because he didn't know if I'd want to see him.””
Emma smiled through her tears.
“I was angry. I told him I hated him.””
“What did he say?”” Lily whispered.
“He said I had every right.””
Emma closed the pendant.
“And then he asked if I would let him try again.””
Lily's eyes filled.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
She looked toward the ceiling.
“For the first time in years, I had my father back.””
Victoria covered her face.
“And then Thomas found out.””
Arthur nodded slowly.
“That was when everything changed.””
Lily turned toward him.
“What did Thomas do?””
Arthur glanced at Victoria.
“He began using Daniel's relationship with Emma against him. He threatened to expose private family matters, destroy business agreements, and take control of the company.””
Emma added, “He also made sure Daniel couldn't access some of his own accounts.””
Victoria looked up.
“Thomas told me Daniel was becoming unstable. He said he was hiding money from the company and putting our family at risk.””
Arthur shook his head.
“He was moving the money himself.””
A knock came from the greenhouse door.
One of the officers entered.
“Ms. Carter?””
Victoria stood.
“Yes?””
“We need you to accompany us to the station to answer some questions.””
Lily immediately grabbed her hand.
“Are they taking Mommy away?””
The officer crouched.
“We just need to talk to her, sweetheart.””
Victoria knelt in front of Lily.
“It's okay.””
“Did you do something bad?””
Victoria looked into her daughter's eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
“Are you going to jail?””
“I don't know.””
Lily began crying.
“Please don't leave me too.””
Victoria pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Oh, my darling.””
Emma watched them.
For the first time that night, her anger softened.
But she didn't forgive Victoria.
Not yet.
The officer waited.
Victoria kissed Lily's forehead.
“I'll be back as soon as I can.””
Then she stood and followed him toward the mansion.
As she passed Emma, she stopped.
“There's something else you need to know.””
Emma's expression hardened.
“What?””
Victoria looked toward the blue clock.
“Daniel didn't choose me to raise Lily because I was her biological mother.””
Emma went completely still.
Lily looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria swallowed.
“I wasn't there when Lily was born. I didn't carry her. I didn't give birth to her.””
Lily's face crumpled.
“But you're my mommy.””
Victoria knelt again.
“Yes. I am the woman who raised you. I held you when you were sick.
I stayed beside your bed when you had nightmares. I taught you to tie your shoes.””
She kissed Lily's hands.
“None of that was a lie.””
Emma looked at Arthur.
He seemed to have expected this revelation.
“Then who is her mother?”” Emma asked.
Victoria reached into her handbag.
She removed a hospital bracelet, yellowed with age.
On it was a name.
*BABY GIRL CARTER — MOTHER: CLAIRE BENNETT.*
Emma stopped breathing.
She looked at the bracelet.
Then at Lily.
“No,” she whispered.
Arthur lowered his head.
“Daniel never wanted this to come out like this.””
Emma took the bracelet with trembling fingers.
“Lily is...””
Victoria nodded.
“Your mother's daughter.””
Lily stared at her sister.
“Then are you my real sister?””
Emma fell to her knees.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Lily slowly reached for her hand.
“Same mommy?””
Emma nodded.
“Same mommy.””
Lily looked toward the door where Victoria had disappeared.
“Then why did Mommy tell me she was my mother?””
Emma couldn't answer.
Arthur finally spoke.
“Because Claire died shortly after Lily was born. Daniel was devastated. Victoria had already become part of the family, and she promised him she would raise Lily as her own.””
“Did Daddy know?”” Lily asked.
Arthur nodded.
“He knew everything.””
Lily looked down at the brass key.
“Then why didn't he tell me?””
Arthur pointed toward the blue clock.
“Because he left you something that explains it.””
He opened the velvet pouch.
Inside was a small brass plate engraved with a number.
*317.*
The same time displayed on the clock.
Arthur turned the clock around.
Behind the wooden backing was another keyhole.
“This isn't the final lock,” he said.
Emma looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Arthur's hands trembled.
“Daniel told me the clock was only the first step. The brass key opens a hidden compartment, but the compartment contains the location of something much bigger.””
He removed a small strip of paper.
Three words were written on it.
*ST. AGNES. ROOM 317.*
Emma stared.
“That's the hospital where Claire died.””
Arthur nodded.
Lily looked between them.
“Can we go there?””
Arthur hesitated.
“Not tonight.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the mansion.
“Because Daniel left instructions that we must find someone there before opening the final box.””
“Who?””
Arthur folded the paper.
“A nurse named Eleanor.””
Emma's eyes widened.
“Eleanor Price?””
Arthur nodded.
Emma whispered:
“She was the nurse who cared for my mother.””
Arthur looked toward the entrance.
“And she was the last person to see Claire alive.””
A phone began ringing inside Arthur's coat.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice spoke on the other end.
Arthur's face went pale.
“What do you mean she's missing?””
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
Emma stepped forward.
“Who?””
Arthur looked at Lily.
“Eleanor.””
May you like
He swallowed.
“Someone removed her from the hospital this morning.””
